This is by far, the best video on UTube on how to find fat wood. I was only looking for pine tree stumps but thanks to you, I can now look at other dead trees! Greetings from Nova Scotia, 🇨🇦
Very good video on locations. One method I never see demonstrated is simply carving or splitting off a fatwood "match". Everyone carries a lighter today. They are smart, practical, reliable, and lightweight. Instead of making all those scrapings, especially if there's high wind, why not just slice off a thin stick that will light easily and stay lit. Slide it into well stacked kindling and your done. I've been doing this for decades. If you have to use a ferro rod, use scrapings to light larger fatwood stick/s for a longer initial burn.

Very good info! Some of the negative comments on your appearance is petty in my opinion. You even had the decency to explain why you grew your hair out for a good cause to donate to children.

What a wonderful exposee on fatwood ! Very well explained. I wasn't aware of Hemlock having flammable resin. I have stayed clear of Hemlock wood because I was told it was poisonous to use when cooking over open flame. The fact it is a source of firestarter is wonderful. I know Spruce produces a resin that when dry looks like sugar but is highly flammable. I have not seen Spruce fatwood. I am not certain if the flammable resin is water soluble. Most of the resin I have seen comes from fresh damage to the tree or sawn limbs and can be collected in liquid form. I usually keep a bottle on me for collecting Spruce resin or sap. I have also heard that pines that do not bear cones are less likely to produce resin or fatwood. It seems to be true but I can't be certain yet. I do tend to gravitate towards pines that bear cones in hopes to find good fatwood. Your comment on the sun is quite interesting and stands to reason. Thank you for your highly informative video, it is the best I have seen to date. There is a girl named Slisa Schell, I think, who has a channel on you tube that does nothing but hunt fatwood. You might check her out. You may have to try different spellings of her name because I do not know if my spelling is correct. It could be shlisa or schlisa or something like that. Well you take care and Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you and the ones you love ! Your hair knot has to go ! Try a military high and tight hairstyle when you go to a barber or stylist. You cut into the tree to get your fat wood, In the spring the sap comes out of the tree and that is a good source of fire starting material, I use it when I go backpacking in the spring and with little to none it will start a fire easily. No need to cut into a tree
He was cutting into a dead tree which makes the fire-gold accessible year round!
No harm is done when cutting into a dead pine or removing a dead branch from a living one. Additionally, if it's autumn when you need that fire, you might not want to wait until Spring for seeping resin (not sap).

Excellent video! Informative with awesome examples. I would caution about widow-makers when axing a dead tree but that example tree was a treasure trove of fire making materials and now I’m excited to look at my area with new eyes!

There's a place 30 minutes from my house, it's in the national forest. It's called a pine plantation, There's alot of downed pine trees
If you must use a cell phone to film the video, hold it horizontally rather than vertically.
After 1 full day of recording and editing and three days trying to get it to upload correctly, I’m still not satisfied with this video.. maybe after I get 1000 subs I’ll re do it, I can do better.. but for now I’m glad to have the information out there. actually it was an informative video, I would say though your white pine has the better fatwood.
The pine is most definitely a better resource than the hemlock, The hemlock is more of a “I’ll take what I can get” situation
I put an "Uncle Kens Flat Candle" and a Ferral rod . Always get fire started .

Using a cutting tool amid the triangle is a no no no.
I believe it depends on the user and where the follow through will land. For me, this was safe.
I seen a section of the video earlier and I see what you’re talking about, definitely did look sketchy but honestly it was a lot to do with the camera angle, the tip of the blade was not close to my leg.

It’s oil based, not gas. Same oil that turpentine is derived from. Stored outside on the ground.. 50-100 years from fallen tree to useable resources.

19:00 probably shouldn't holster your axe like that with the blade exposed facing forward. Assuming your axe is kept razor sharp, you're asking for a potentially serious injury.
Suggestion when capturing video, always hold the camera horizontal. Every TV screen, monitor screen, computer screen, movie theater screen, are orientated horizontally. In videos where the camera is vertical (portrait orientation), as are most of these, then played back on the aforementioned devices the left one-third, and right one-third of the screen is cut off, causing the video to appear as a stick video, tall and narrow. We humans, maybe all lifeforms, view our surroundings considerably more horizontally than vertically. Holding a cellphone or camera vertically the video produced is similar to looking through a tight keyhole or wearing horse blinders. In addition to seeing the entire scene the camera person must pan more left and right which creates much camera movement; not good. Also, viewed videos captured vertically becomes spatially disorientating.
The only problem in an otherwise great video is the fact that you should never expose your femeral artery to a knife accident ( not cool to teach that ! )
I completely agree with you, this was a situation of manipulation by camera angle, as bad as it does look on camera the blade wasn’t actually close to my leg and the blade force direction was straight down, so follow through would have went straight to the ground, perhaps a camera angle I will avoid in the future

Hello BS, I’m not sure what you watched the video on but no fish eye optic was used. I apologize that you feel your time was wasted, I spent two days of my life putting together one of the most comprehensive guides on locating fat wood out there.. wasting your time was the last thing I wanted to do.
Yes I left the tire because it wasn’t my concern or focus that day and theres a ton of trash in that area, a cleanup day will be planned and I will attempt to get help with that event.
I’m always thankful to learn and grow as a woodsman, please make video on this topic, and let me know so I can watch it. I would love to learn a thing or two from you (no sarcasm, I’m serious).
