  • Erich Maria Remarque is an author that is underrated in the circles of psychology, philosophy and seemingly CZcams as well. Let's change that.
In this video essay I also discuss Remarque's themes of masculinity, morality and meaninglessness. Importantly, this is not a review or analysis.
Soundtrack by Molchat Doma & Niša; Directed by Augustus
Erich Maria Remarque is most known for his novel (and now also movie) "All Quiet on the Western Front" however in this video I also discuss "Three Comrades", "The Black Obelisk" and "A Time to Love and A Time to Die". Works of his that are not discussed but well worth mentioning are: Arch of Triumph, The Road Back and The Night in Lisbon.

Remarque is so undervalued it is sinful. This excellent encapsulation does a marvelous job presenting the dire need for resurgence of his work...needed for the hard bitten truths abut manhood so cogently delineated here. I might add, as a final enticement to any one considering picking a Remarque title - and they are ALL excellent - that the Black Obelisk is not only a phenomenal social and historical satire, but also laugh out loud funny. Remarque makes us laugh at our inane selves, which is genius.

Great video man not enough people spend time on Remarque. I've been trying to read all his novels in order this year and I'm almost through them. He really captures in his writings a vivid picture of the times from a normal mans perspective which I find very interesting. He manages to make these period pieces somehow relatable to us today. His monologues always get me in thousand yard stare mode. The scene in chapter 9 of All Quiet on the Western Front where he's stuck in a shell-hole with the French soldier gets me staring holes in my wall lol.

I think your thoughts about demonised men are really important these days. Lovely video;)

I have read a lot of classics, a lot of great authors, but I was recently introduced to Remarque and I have fallen in love with his books. Obviously, he is famous, but I must say I was quite shocked to realise that he is nowhere near as famous as he should be from the sheer quality, depth, and beauty of his work. To me, a far superior writer to Hemingway, yet Hemingway is viewed as a literary god and Remarque viewed as a man who had only one great book and nothing can be further from the truth.

My theory on Hemingway’s popularity is his writing style; it is stylistically simple and sometimes even (purposefully) lacking in vocabulary. I think this well done simplicity of style is attractive to a much larger audience. Of course, his theme of adventure and conquest is also a factor; it is much more enjoyable than Remarque’s grim and real look into the horrors of war and humanity in general. But yes, I fully agree with your comment, to me Remarque is far superior and Hemingway’s For Whom The Bell Tolls doesn’t have anything to say in the face of Remarque’s novels

@@augustusphilosophy Great points, and I do agree. I also think the fact that he is American helped him greatly.

Overlooked comments on Arch of Triumph. For me, one of the best statements on the expat, exile life, far superior to Hemingway
