Leoš Janáček byl hudební génius...překrásná Sinfonietta, Taras Bulba, Lašské tance, Glagolská mše...s B.Smetanou dva nej skladatelé.
One of the all time greatest choral works. Janacek at his finest and most original . This is a great performance conducted by a true lover of Janacek'S music, Sir Charles Mackeras (RIP).
He was a lovely man.

Janacek speaks to me of emotions that are very close to us. Raw. Unfiltered. Truthful. What a great master ! Mackerras knew about his music as no other. What more can i say, besides a big thank you to the good souls that made this video available.
I compare this piece to El Greco's The Opening of the Fifth Seal.
I am having "an argument" with my German friend about folklore. She seems to think that it can be a bit boring and... I am Moravian, a city person- but when I hear Moravian folklore music my heart goes nuts and I believe it´s the same for those who still live it. And she said she knows Czech music through Dvořák. And I thought he never "spoke" to me- but Jacek- love him. Maybe because he grew up on the same wild Moravian folklore. (Czech and Moravia are very different in that regard).
This is my favourite piece. It´s like I can see all the beauty around, sun shining through trees...

A wonderful performance. His tutelage with the great Václav Talich always shined through when Mackerras conducted in the Czech repertoire.

@@Camila_and_Daniel_Gaming AMEN! I have had always the same feeling, and having sung for orchestras, that is how I feel most comfortable, and comforted, in expressing it. I have always had some chronic diffidence with much of "contemporary" music of the churches where I go, as a lot of the musical fare of the more recent kind is not much above the stature of grocery store jingles, musically.
Ah, but not such as this. One of the persons at one version of Janacek's "Sinfonietta" posted, "Please, no religious grandstanding. That should go without saying." (Commenters had weighed in on that ironic aspects of LJ's spiritual sides.)
Just what was he thinking! For me, Janacek is one of the most religious atheists who ever lived. Even Graham Greene, a later convert through his wife to Catholicism, neared his last years saying, "I am a Catholic agnostic. Maybe even a Catholic atheist." That was before a Spanish priest drew him back to the Church in his last times, when he wrote, "Monsignor Quixote" with Sir Alec Guinness reprising that in a TV version, if I recall correctly. Very intriguing.
Greene writes in his memoirs that Pope Paul VI had invited him to a private audience and while at table he told Greene he admired more than one of his books, I believe he cited "The Power and the Glory," and GG noted that it was on the "banned" list of the Holy See. The Pope, to his great credit (at least in my eyes) said something close to, "Mr. Greene, there will always be some Catholics who have problems with some of your books. I would not worry myself much about that." Greene penned, "Advice which I found it easy to accept."
It seems many of these then were able to distinguish the "shine" from the "Shinola" so to speak. Or the pay from the payola.
In any case, like Handel's Messiah, which I've been privileged to sing as a chorister, I find Janacek summons some of the deepest religious feeling in me.
Go figure.
As Handel said when an Irish aristocrat commended him after his premiere in Dublin of The Messiah, as "very entertaining." :
"I would be very sorry if I only entertained them, I wished to make them better."
And music has just that power. It's in a very good book that I have that this is just so.

And in much of his work. I can't forget the first time I heard "Sinfonietta" loaned to me by a childhood friend who was getting his music degree at USC. it shook my soul to its roots, just beginning my studies of music at the wizened age (relatively!) of 18. I was so indelibly and lastingly flabbergasted by the opening 10 mintues, that about 12 years later I had to write in reverent homage to that brass glory and Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" (whose inspiration traces, I feel, directly to Janacek's use of brass here and elsewhere, especially Sinfonietta) a 'modern' fanfare of my own, as an Easter Processional.
Janacek is a master of the sort of groundless (in the meditational sense) devotion that speaks to all who can hear. Worship.
@@johnervin8033 Leoš Janáček was not simply an atheist -- in his writings, he was critical of the established religion and of the in Moravian/Bohemian church. So, while you have the right to profess any faith you wish, please do not do to Janáček what has also been done to Ralph Vaughan Williams, Jan Struther, and even (0n his death-bed) Christopher Hitchens, i.e. observe that they write on religious themes, so presume to posthumously convert them to Christianity.. or, at least, claim that in them, God was moving in some mysterious way. It's superstitious cant, and betrays their right _not_ to believe, which is as valid as yours to the contrary.

Russian church is not enthusiastic about accepting works of Russian classic composers as part of liturgy, not sure why. It seems to me Janicek would have better chances, at least choral parts.
Sto ascoltando in questo momento una musicassetta registrata nel 1988 su francecmusique. Direttore waclav Lehmann. A mio parere è uno dei capolavori assoluti della musica. Janacek è un compositore immenso.

Non capisco il ceco utilizzato da Supraphon, ma nessun altro commento sembra evidenziare il fatto che la presente esecuzione utilizza la versione in cui vengono ripristinate le indicazioni originali del manoscritto di Janáček, con l'Intrada eseguita all'inizio ed alla fine e varie altre modifiche nell'orchestrazione, particolarmente rilevanti nel "Věruju" (tra l'altro, con l'intervento di tre timpanisti).

За всю жизнь привык к языку Русской провославной церкви, но только сейчас как-то в полной мере дошло, что ведь это и есть Старо-славянский, не искусственный церковный, а просто старый славянский. Сильная вещь, даже страшно как-то, так глубоко в суть молитвы проникает музыка. Конечно Янычек знал музыку Мусоргского, Римского-Корсакова, Сверидова, но мне Янычек придал особую драматичность словам молитвы.
А вот интересно, совеременные чехи понимают старо-славянский, как русские?

@@vm1486 Все правильно Вы пишите и понимаете. Правильно сказать "занималась ЭТИМ языком", или "изучала, учила ЭТОТ язык". Мне все больше наравится Янычек, конечно все любят Дворжака, Сметану, а Янычека все признают, но он как-то сложноват. Я думаю через 40-50 лет он будет также популярен как и Дворжек. Спасибо чехам что хорошо сохраняете могилы советских солдат на кладбище в Праге, я в 1977 был в Праге, был и на его могиле, он погиб 7 Мая 1945 в боях за Прагу. Мне судьба Янычека напоминает Фауста из Гете. Поздняя любовь. Я это тоже понимаю.

I never heard the "ending" played at the beginning before, at least on my recording (Kubelik?) that's not the case. Anyone know why?
This is the original version (note that it's called 'Intrada' - always puzzled me why it should have been just at the end). It also includes a powerful passage during the 'Passion' sequence of the Credo not heard in most performances.

After some research, the principal trumpet is Miroslav Kejmar.
I am curious as to how this will be performed at Carnegie Hall, given that there is no organ in that hall. It will be performed there by the Czech Phil led by Semyon Bychkov next season, in Dec. 2025.
Electric? Pretty remarkable, actually, that the storied Carnegie Hall doesn't have an organ. I'm hoping to be there.

No he didn't. There is not a different tempo marking or a fermata for the last two beats than for all the previous sequence. It was an affectation which is not appropriate.
The timpani ending is as written in the score. Good sound too.

Shocked by the coldness of this public... Do they understood the music? Or just didn't like it? What I know is that Janáček certainly deserves much better audience!!!
This is the Czech culture. People are quite reserved here. It does not mean that they do not appreciate the music.

The norm, at least back then, was to reserve the applause for the very end of the performance.
Based on three years of Czech Philharmonic concerts in recent years, what often happens is the applause builds in intensity over several curtain calls; it's pretty cool. But this was 1996; don't know what the norm was then.
I'm not happy with the strings in this performance, they are weak and thin considering the numbers involved. It may be the recording balance as the rest of the orchestra sound good.

No matter how you slice it, intentionally choosing to have ads randomly and loudly popping up suddenly while the music is playing is incredibly disturbing and obnoxious. The people now running the formerly respected Supraphon recording label should be ashamed of themselves.

They are singing in Old Slavonic.
That is why it is called the Glagolitic Mass.
