I’ve been a substitute school teacher for years. None of this is normal. Being physically at school like this is good for the parents if they have young children that they can’t leave at home while they go to work. Not everybody can work from home, so that’s good. Going to school like this, expecting young children to be emotionally and physically buttoned down by wearing masks for long periods, not being able to see the expressions of others, physically apart, staying in the classroom for lunch, etc.

So true. As a high schooler, I can guarantee that it’ll be HELL. Kids can’t and will not social distance. Schools aren’t big enough to accommodate all of these kids! I remember when diseases like pink eye and the flu would go around like the plague. People will die.

Thinking back too, there's no way high schoolers are going to be socially distancing. Unless you are at a small school it's hard with like 30 kids in a room, how are they going to spread the chairs that wide, plus high schoolers arent going to listen.

Well, I just want to speak my situation. I’m not speaking for all, I just want to say something. I live in California and am a coming junior in high school. About 2 weeks ago, my school had sent a email to all the parents regarding how they want to teach. They made a vote and I suppose the votes would help decide wether the school year would be taught online or physical. My mom voted for it to be physical because she was thinking of me and my younger brother who is a coming freshman. Her and my dad work so she thinks that we’re not responsible enough to do online and take care of ourselves and do chores at the same time...its sad...I know. Anyways, the final result was online, so for this coming semester, classes would be held online. I’m actually really happy it was online because in some classrooms, tables are formed to make a circle, so if they wanted, it could be in groups. I doubt if we were to go to school they’d keep us like that but some classrooms are too small to have each person have their own table. May I remind you that each classroom contains about 30-36 students. Now I see some comments saying that the students won’t listen. Well that might be true for the wannabe’s and baddies and those who are just disobedient in general, but our school isn’t like that very much. I’m sure that the teachers would enforce procedures and rules as the yard duties patrol and assist students. Since, there are going to be new freshman and they most likely will still have that middle school vibe and attitude, there might be problems but yeah. I’ve heard that some schools are going to have some days physical and some days online. Ive also heard that some schools are going back and I feel really bad for them, especially the little ones because I know they can be brats and not listen. They learn with their peers, they’re hands on learners and they’re not that clean, so knowing that, I would love to hear how your schools are approaching this change.

@Bandana Dee Isaac are you out of your mind dude??? Teachers have had to change their whole way of teaching in less than a week to adapt to the new norm. Create lesson plans, activities, while also having to deal with their own families. And let's not forget end of the year assignments, when kids that are failing their grade have to turn in all their missing work.
Who do you think does all the grading?
Who do you think has to answer to the parents when they want an easy fix for a whole year's worth of work?
      The principal? The secretary?

    • @calrey

@@nGUNNARp Not sure where you got those numbers. But here in the U.S. there was 34k deaths in the U.S. during the 2018-2019 flu season. So it lacks the same numbers as Covid (Covid has resulted in 165k deaths in the U.S.). Specifically, though, only about 200 children throughout the entire U.S. died of the flu last year...which is still sad. But it's a smaller number perhaps because pediatricians here in the U.S. remind parents to vaccinate their children for the flu every year during checkups. OR flu shots are mandatory depending on the state. If an approved vaccine existed and was properly distributed it would be a different story. But you can't compare Covid19 with the flu when there's no vaccine. It isn't logical.

What happened to 6 feet distancing? How are we going to deal with children
who experience the death of a teacher or staff member? And, how are children going to deal with the death of two or three or more teachers and staff members in their school? Some children will be acutely aware of what they need to do to take precautions. I can’t help but think that some are going to internalize the death of a teacher and by that I mean that they are going to feel anxious and some may even feel responsible for their teacher’s death ( even though it is in no way their fault). We don’t know enough about COVID-19 yet. We could be jeopardizing our children and certainly we know that children can be carriers of Covid-19, even though they have absolutely no symptoms. What happens when children carry this home and there is a death in the family? I have not heard any of these issues discussed by anybody.

How much top-down teaching is given, depends on the teacher.
Student-lead learning is proven to be at least as effective as top-down teaching, and it also teaches the students social skills, leadership and *how to learn*. @J P Perhaos you are too stupid to realize that kids do not learn if they are tied to a chair hour after hour. Anyone who knows anything about education knows that children need to move to learn, to do hands on projects, group work and participatory activities. Obviously doing that online is very very far from Ideal, but it is better than nothing, and many teachers and parents have found creative ways to do these things even online. Being glued to a chair with a mask on and prohibited to touch your friends, having to be policed all day to insure that you follow rigid social distancing is not learning. It is a highly stressful situation that not only inhibits any kind of learning it is damaging beyond measure.

All I can do is vent, mourn, and ultimately be thankful for educators like this young lady. Thank you for documenting, perhaps now the public will see how ludicrous it is to be in the class, when the “experts” are saying 6 ft apart. People in ivory towers creating and executing ineffective policies. All the while we’re literally in the trenches everyday....if you have a teacher in your family, as a friend, or your child’s new teacher; give them the proper love and respect today, we are the heart of our society my friends! Desktops and legs and the chair front and back and underneath...no way. That is 90 minutes to two hours work. Include all the stuff the kids touch and it adds up. Does maintenance have time to do offices and schoolrooms? No. Can the kids wipe down their own direct areas? MAybe.
