"The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia"
JULIA: (closes dressing room door as she enters room) Excuse me, aren't you Marjorie Leigh Winnick, the current Miss Georgia World?
MARJORIE: Why, yes I am.
JULIA: I'm Julia Sugarbaker, Suzanne Sugarbaker's sister. I couldn't help over hearing part of your conversation.
MARJORIE: Well, I'm sorry. I didn't know anyone was here.
JULIA: Yes, and I gather from your comments there are a couple of other things you don't know, Marjorie.
For example, you probably didn't know that Suzanne was the only contestant in Georgia pageant history to sweep every category except congeniality, and that is not something the women in my family aspire to anyway.
Or that when she walked down the runway in her swimsuit, five contestants quit on the spot. Or that when she emerged from the isolation booth to answer the question, "What would you do to prevent war?" she spoke so eloquently of patriotism, battlefields and diamond tiaras, grown men wept.
(Suzanne is now outside the dressing room door, now ajar slightly.) And you probably didn't know, Marjorie, that Suzanne was not just any Miss Georgia, she was THE Miss Georgia. She didn't twirl just a baton, that baton was ON FIRE. And when she threw that baton into the air, it flew higher, further, faster than any baton has ever flown before, hitting a transformer and showering the darkened arena with sparks! And when it finally did come down, Marjorie, my sister caught that baton, and 12,000 people jumped to their feet for sixteen and one-half minutes of uninterrupted thunderous ovation, as flames illuminated her tear-stained face!
(Julia leans into Marjorie's face; Marjorie is now cowering.) And that, Marjorie -- just so you will know -- and your children will someday know --- is The Night. The Lights. Went Out. In Geor-gia!
RIP Dixie Virginia Carter May 25, 1939 April 10, 2010
One of the best verbal beat downs in television history
Too funny! You're too twisted for color television.
Agreed sir
+Jeff Green love the reference to steel magnolias
“Suzanne was not just any Miss Georgia, she was thee Miss Georgia!”
Hear, hear!!
Epic monologue! I can't believe she never won an Emmy for this show.
She was goooood.
Rest In Peace Dixie.....Rest In Peace.
What I wanna know is: how many pages of script is this? This is way better than the speeches on Gray's Anatomy!
Approx. 2 pages, in general it's about 1 minute per page.
@@softwater88 Do not, do not put Grey's Anatomy next to Designing Women.
Thor Swenson “This show was too Southern...to ever be considered for an Emmy.” From 1987-92, Designing Women garnered 18 Emmy nods. 2 of them were for Comedy Series (1989, 91), 4 were for acting (Delta Burke-she was nominated twice-Meshach Taylor, and Alice Ghostley), and one was for the creator for writing the groundbreaking, most memorable episode in the show’s history, “Killing All The Right People”, about the AIDS crisis. The only one the show won was for Hairstyling in 1988. So, your statement is false.
It doesn’t make sense that Dixie Carter was snubbed at least three acting nods. But I also think it had to do with the show competing against The Cosby Show, The Golden Girls, and Cheers-all of which were on NBC at the time. Designing Women never stood a chance against those sitcoms. Now, had the show premiered in the early 80s, it probably would’ve been bigger than The Golden Girls.
Taylor Holloway I’d like to add that Dixie was an old school Republican & socially liberal on many issues (women’s rights, gay rights etc). She would never have supported what the red party has become today.
Julia (Dixie Carter) proves you can still be a LADY while telling someone off....not one curse word! She was my favorite character on Designing Women
Denise ... I agree ... always waited for her to speak up about something. Great writing and a great actress who could deliver the lines.
Julia Sugarbaker is my favorite person on Designing Women!!
Julia Sugarbaker is my life coach. I want to be her when I grow up.
She doesn't blink through the whole speech. Amazing.
They don't call her The Terminator for nothing!
RIP Dixie
After all these years, I still cheer. I loved this show so much.
They dont EVEN make them like that!!!! The characters were well
developed deeply fleshed out.
God bless Designing Women
We have the reruns.
I get goosebumps.
What really gets me isn't JUST the speech, but Suzanne's face as she overhears her older sister defending her honor. It's truly sweet. 😊
I enjoyed that part the most in the scene. Even if Julia didn't care one ioda for beauty pageants, she still stood up for her baby sister. Suzanne knew how precious that was...
she would have given Meryl Streep a run for her money in Devil Wears Prada.
Only Julia was nice and can switch into terminator mode when she had to. Everyone needs a big sister like Julia...she is fabulous!:)
@@polyprinzRun for her money? Julia would have chewed her up and spit her out!
Now I can hear her doing the "Oh . You think this has nothing to do with you..." speech LOL
@@imperiallebaron2391 Miranda can command a room without raising her voice. That's power.
@@PHSDM104 Perhaps. But she wouldn't command Julia Sugarbaker.
Marjorie is still trying to locate her edges. It's quite a phenomenon that whenever this clip is played at retro night at local bars here in ATL, everyone can (and does) recite this diatribe word for word!
djintheatl they do it at some of the clubs in Dallas too, it always plays on a video screen right before the song "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" and everybody recites it right along with Julia
For some strange reason, I occasionally have this scene pop into my head just as I'm about to go to sleep, and I'm forced to watch it again so I can say the lines along with Ms. Carter just so I can sleep! LOL
I was never really a Designing women fan, but I am sure the boys can recite the lines, just like some of the Golden Girls lines.
I'm trying to locate my own edges. Julia was snatching bitches bald!
djintheatl Ha, I didn’t realize this scene was a thing. I remember this episode when it first aired and it was brilliant.
I just loved her fire in her voice! My goodness, I have and will always missed Ms. Dixie Carter. She was excellent, especially in this video.
Brandon Waters ❤💯
Dixie Carter was a fierce Southern woman, a spitfire! 😉
Ons of a kind repeats are still laugh out loud funny! Such class and grace ! No one ever to replace or duplicate Dame Dixie Carter!
who has this monologue memorized? *raises hand* i can recite this from memory
oNegLeEk i do!
Lunatic505 oh I do!
“Suzanne was the ONLY contestant in Georgia Pageant history to sweep EVERY category...except for Congeniality...That is NOT something the women in my family aspire to anyway!”
I love that line.
Love that line.
Was she Miss America 1975?
My God I remember watching this episode on tv years ago and this scene is still just as awesome as ever! Nothing like your big sister having your back!
What a true Southern Belle! I love this woman!
She was A REAL Belle, in REAL life.
Julia Sugarbaker, a classy and beautiful Southern Belle!
I've always loved how Julia told her off, stood up and said "well now you do" and just walked out like nothing happened.
When Julia started out in that sugary sweet tone, you knew sparks were ready to fly! Miss Carter was a CLASS ACT....
I never get enough of this scene and can't watch it without reciting it with her! Mrs. Carter had more talent in a single fingernail than most actresses of today have in their entire body, and I miss her more with each passing year.
One of the best moments on DW!
It doesn't matter how many times I hear it,this will forever be my favorite scene from any show, ever!
I badly miss Ms. Carter. Every time I see her husband in something, I almost cry.
I remember watching this and when they played "Isn't She Lovely" at the end I cried. So sweet.
The episode was written by series creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason in response to people who were fat shaming Delta Burke in real life.
Absolutely marvelous! No one could have done this better!
This part was my favorite out of the ENTIRE series. Amazing!! I wish my sister and I loved each other enough.
one of the best performances in tv history
Watching this in November 2019
She deserved an Emmy just for this scene alone! What an actress!
She was one of my favorite for reading people.. Man love her
This is my ode to my sister. There will never be another Dixie Carter. Love it!
My absolute favorite scene from the show. The only other one that comes close is the scene where they're reading the letter from Dash Goff.
Rose, these two are my favorite scenes as well :)
Christina Rodriguez Same, here, but also the one where Julia spends the night with the dying man who was in love with her.
“Crazy People in the South” Standing up for Aunt Bernice. Epic.
I Adore Julia Sugarbaker. She's the proverbial role model, North and South. I love her wit! Her lovely comebacks, graceful charm, and her faithfulness to her family and friends.
Stick up for your sister Julia!
This scene just popped into my head the other day. I miss this show.
So apparently I'm named after Julia Sugarbaker and this is the first thing I've ever seen from this show? I have to say, my parents made a good choice. I may not be exactly like this character. But I can see now a lot of my ideals are like this womans, proud and strong and willing to stand up for anyone who needs it. I need to watch this show!
Men, Jury Duty, Aids and Politics
I've seen these clips half a dozen times now...
This one is my absolute FAVORITE
I loved Dixie Carter. One of my earliest crushes. "...Congeniality, which is something women in my family have never aspired to." What a lady.
Mom and I both cheered. Julia told that heifer off and got behind her sister. Very awesome moment. Loved it when she went off on folks like that. Some of them deserved it too.
There was no one quite like Dixie Carter. She had elegance even while chewing somebody out.
She would not take any sort of doo-doo from anybody. This moment proves it.
I forgot how much I love that show!
When I went to the Midnight Sun in San Francisco for the first time, this clip came up and every single man in that bar (except me and my friend) said this entire speech in unison!
This is a favorite "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia"
i did this monologue for an audition and screwed it up because i was so nervous, but i still know it word by word!
This makes me cry every time I hear it! I love this! Gotta love how she stood up for her baby sister!
This scene brings tears to my eyes!!! Awesome, acting, writing, and demonstration of sisterly love.
OMG,i just love this lol, you can't pay for people that can speak with such class, Almost there Julia, I just have to loosing the curing lol. I love it..........R.I.P.
God rest her soul! There wasn’t anyone like Miss Dixie Carter! ❤️
Best scene EVER!!!
Woooo guurl Julia read her like cliffnotes. Quick fast and so eloquently.
Epic! This needs to be back on tv especially now
Denise - That might be hard to do considering she's dead!
I've always had trouble believing the "16 and ONE Half minutes" standing ovation line. That's a long ass time for an entire crowd to stand up clapping.
Yes that is hard to believe.
Newsflash: This is a sitcom - not a documentary.
It's not a true life story. Just fictitious characters in a show...
She Got her all the Way together and sent her off to school! YES!!
Everybody LOVES Julia's rants!!!!!
That is literally the sexiest, strongest verbal intervention defending ones sister I have ever seen WOW! 😉
Rip Dixie!! One of her best tirades!
One of the best monologues ever. Writing and acting merging perfectly. I’ve heard this so many times and it never losses it’s magic.
Over 30 years later...still one of the best moments on TV
Love that woman! I sooo missed seeing her on tv.
I wish that I had the capability to tell off people so eloquently ! Julia Sugarbaker does it with class.
one of the best scenes on television ever!!
Loved when #JuliaSugarbaker went in on someone. Minced meat. #DesigningWomen
One of my favorite episodes. I love when Susanne found out neither had a year on their birth certificates..miss the class and southern grace of this show..Thank you
Two of the best minutes in TV history.
I loved this scene
One of the BEST TV SHOWS EVER !!!!!!!! WHAT A GREAT CAST !
I loved this scene.
That has got to be one of the fiercest moments in all of television history.
My favorite Julia moment....don't mess with da' sistas!
OMG I LOVED this episode! I LOVED it whenever Julia got pissed off!!! The classy way to tell someone off without even cursing!!! Brilliant! RIP Dixie Carter!
I can never get enough of this scene & will watch it over & over again, Julia Sugerbaker was one woman that you never wanted to be on her bad side & I love how she always puts people in their place!!
R.I.P. Dixie Carter you are truly missed. 💜💔😢🙏🏼💋
#DesigningWomen
#DixieCarter
#DeltaBurke
#LoveLoveLove
Another episode that I remember is when Tony Goldwyn played the part of a family friend & was having the ladies plan his funeral. They were bold enough to do that episode & all of them should have received an Emmy for that one. It was beautifully done, with class. Tony was superb.
Was sitting here missing my beloved Aunt....my last mother figure who died a year ago and right on time my BFF sent me this clip....😂😂😂😂 Word for word I can still recite this entire scene and instead of tears it's smiles and laughs thinking about how my aunt and I never missed an episode of Designing Women when I was growing up❤️❤️❤️❤️
RIP Dixie. You made me laugh, smile, and think and I loved your singing.
I had to come watch this again. Rest in peace sweet Dixie. Thank you for all the laughs and good times we had.
I miss this show. Don't mess with a Southern bell's sister.
This was the kind of love I grew up with, watching my sisters go to battle for one another. They could tease each other and give each other a hard time, but let someone else try it.... They would suffer the wrath! LOL! There is no tighter bond than that of my sisters.
This is the single greatest piece of television in the world.
Love her!
This is one of my favorite scenes ever. I own the series on DVD and watch this scene weekly. I will miss Dixie, she has truly been one of my hero's.
And to think this is only the second episode. How many shows can claim to have an memorable moment like that only 2 episodes into their lifespan (and remember, technically these shows are not even on the air when their second episodes are shot, so no one knows who these people are yet.
Best scene!
I can't get enough of this! Damn fierce!
That's why you don't fuck with Miss Sugarbaker.
I watched this last night with a smile and this morning I watch it again with tears in my eyes. Thank goodness for film - that these wonderful moments are captured and can live on. RIP.
This was The Ultimate Scene of Designing Women,, could not wait for it to re-run back then,, and am Still Enjoying it Now,, Love Dixie Carter, will never forget how Beautifully She Sang The Song,, "" How Great Thou Art"",, full of talent, gone however,, unforgettable. RIP Sweet Heart,, you are Loved. 5/24/19,, and am Still Watching You.
before there was Bianca Del Rio....there was Julia Sugarbaker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best reads in television history!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@wntoply6 she has said in the past she didn't agree with all her rants but whenever she was given long speeches she got a chance to sing in exchange. ;)
I remember watching this show , I loved it when Dixie went off , but this time she was perfection , I remember howling my ass off .
Have not found any other like her .
Could you see her as your big sister , 🇺🇸💕☮️
the night the lights went out in GEORGIA~
Julia Sugarbaker - the epitomy of brass , class , and talent....our prayers and thoughts to you Hal and the entire family....Now God and Heaven can appreciate the Grand Dame for themselves and bring laughter as she has with all the world...God Bless Dixie......love ya
Awesome!!! One of my favorite moments from the series.
No one and I mean no one but Julia Sugarbaker could tear down a person where they stood like her.
this show was great when Suzanne was on it, but it died when she left.
I remember seeing this episode for the first time in a private club I belonged to in Indianapolis, IN. That was the moment that I knew I would forever love Julia Sugarbaker. And, like other posters have mentioned here, I could see it again and again and never get tired of it. Goosebumps is right!
Whoa! That was the first big speech Julia made in that show! I mean, that was something!
That was the first ? It was still the best of them all even though I loved her rants every time.
@@jaymillymills Of course.
Best chewing out EVER!!!!
Well done Julia Sugarbaker 🌷☺...
Love it! RIP Dixie
Fierce.
I remember this scene!!!! More women, at least some that I know, should get a VERBAL THRASHING like this one!!!!
