My pool company is refusing to service pools in my area any longer so I’m learning how to do it myself. Thank you for the video. It looks a lot easier to do than I was afraid of.
You're not alone. Same just happened to me.. (Pool service ditched me). Just found this channel today. So many videos and so much information.
We’ve had three pool services fire us. I guess it’s just not worth their time. We never even negotiated prices, they set it and we agreed.
It’s worth the money just to hire someone to come and do the job . I’m not good with chemicals and don’t want to mess with them ! But the video is great thanks!
Where are y'all from? That sucks. Hopefully not FL as we need clean pools often. We ditched our guy almost a year ago or so cuz they went from 100 a week to 110 then a few months later went to 120 so we didn't want their continous raised prices we took matters into our own hands
My local pool service , in Proctorville Ohio cost me lots of money by leaving my pump housing leaking, after video recording it, too busy to finish their work, left me with not only needing a new pump but electricity too!!
This is the video to watch. He shows how to connect both ends and why. Most of the other videos do not cover what he shows. Good stuff!
This guy is awesome. He explain s things clearly and gives reasons for why he is doing something. I've watched other channels where they just assume you know what they are talking about.
Mark your videos are invaluable, thank you so much for taking the time to do them.
Just want to say thanks for your efforts in making these videos. They're all very well produced, and extremely helpful.
Wow. This is great. Just bought a home with an inground and I’m lost. Lol. You literally answered all my “what if’s” as I was asking them in my head.. Great video. So clear and easy and quick. Subscribing now, and going to watch more. Thanks a bunch!
Thank you Mark! I currently got a job ar Leslies and I love it so much! I sit at home and watch your videos to help further educate myself, which by the way you're very very good at explaining! thank you again!
Excellent. I'm a long-time pool owner but have always struggled with vacuuming. This was very helpful.
After 20 Years Of Pool Ownership I Ordered A Vacuum Plate. Didn't Know Such A Device Existed. Thank you.
this is the best 👌 how to without a doubt. Straight to the point easy with no annoying unnecessary chater.
I have now watched 3 of you videos and all three were very helpful. You channel is the best pool channel that I have found and in the future I will look here first………..and most likely will not have to look further. Thank you.

Very simple and well explained. I thought I knew how to vacuum my pool. However, your explanation taught me the very right way to do it. Thank you!
Thanks for your easy to understand information, I've been trying to find out when to close the skimmer lines (didn't even know what they were for!) and this really helped.
I wish I had found your videos last year when I was completely clueless 😊 Your instructions and visuals are so through and clear - thank you so much!
im a new home buyer and have my first pool. this video was extremely helpful and straight to the point.👍
That hand over hand trick is so key. Thanks for all the tips!
Wow! Thank you for this video. it is very informative. I did not know about the hose having a swivel end and has to be connected to the vacuum head. I just learned that today. I just usually connect to either end. 😊
Thank you. Excellent explanation. Very helpful.
awesome quick and easy instruction. Thank you
This is the only step by step description video I’ve seen. Thank you.
All his videos are great information with demonstrations
The best video I’ve watched so far.
I saw some that says Backwash-rinse - vacuum
But looks like vacuum part comes first and it makes more sense .
Perfect timing! Thanks so much!
This is a fantastic video! And keeping the skimmer basket in is also a great idea that I never ever thought of!! Thanks so much!
Thanks Mark! How do you get the water out of be tube when finished?
@@cathylingard3885 That's not difficult. Either lift the rod in the air or lift the hose and let the water run outof it.
Thank you for your video. I have watched quite a few similar videos and still leaned one new thing.
Very well explained 👏
You are so great in explaining things and why you do it this or that way. I haven't got a skimmer plate yet but will search for one. What I do is first get all the leaves and or debris with the net to avoid clogging. Thanks for this video.
Thank you!!!! You were the FIRST of many to explain the valve placements for vacuuming, so that even today’s teenagers could understand!!!
Thank you for the instruction. Very helpful. simple and straightforward. Just what I needed.
Nice video. Answered my questions. Thank you.
Your videos are fantastic!!!! Thank you
thanks Mark...very helpful video to. one who has had a pool for 10 yrs. and no local support to speak of.
Good no nonsense video. Thanks!
Thanks, this video is easy to follow!
Thank you so much. Your videos are so helpful and I really appreciate it!
Great video, thanks for the explanation! Very helpful😅🙏🏼
Great tutorial…you addressed what many missed
I’m so glad I found your video, simple and easy to understand! Now I feel confident that I can do this myself 👍
I like your videos. Very informative.
Great video! As a new pool owner it’s been a bit overwhelming with all the information that’s been given. This video really cleared up my confusion. Thank you!
be proud of your work standing the test of time;)
Awesome video! Thank you
Great video, thanks.
I appreciate this video. It helped tremendously.
Thank you Mark!
Thanks Mark .🙏🤝🏽My God bless you.
Best guy in the business. Wish your store was in my area. Keep making videos!
It actually went off on its own when I added more salt to the system. Thanks!
Perfect!. Thank You!
Thank you!
Thank you for posted your video
god bless this man!
Thanks for sharing!!!😎
Good video. Nice and simple. I just called my pool supply store and ask them to set aside the plate you mentioned. I don't have that. So tomorrow I'll pick it up and Thursday I 'll get to work.
I like your pool vacuum videos
good work boilermaker
So helpful.
So many great tips and solid advice. Do you have any videos or tips/best practices on how to actually vacuum?
Love u brother, thanks. Very useful 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Best pool channel
Thanks so much!!!❤️
We quit our pool service over a year ago and I've been vacuuming the pool, cleaning and putting all the chemicals myself. We got a water testing kit online cuz the paper tester isn't very accurate on pools. Its been great but the vacuum never had strong section. I usually take the filter out and clean it and no change. Today i was frustrated cuz it wasn't working strong and the pool had a ton of bugs from last night, idk why or where they came from as we've never had that issue and every neighbor had it. They all sunk down after the rain and the corners were covered in black bugs. I turned the drain off and boy the amount of suction got me excited 😂
Can't wait to learn more
It helped...thank u
Thanks!!
Thank you
I’ve changed out my filter, my variable speed pump, super pump and in-line chlorination. Along with all that, I’ve reconfigured all my pad piping. Why? Pool people in my area are unreliable, period. I might need to go into the business! Thanks for info. You seem like a great pool company!
Helpful
Thanks. Subscribing now
Great video. My automatic vacuum is not able to pick up dead algae on the bottom of the pool so I'm gonna have to use the manual vaccum to waste method just like in the video.
Thank you 🌹 🌹 🌹 🌹
We've had our inground for 50 years, this year. We always put the end of our hose in front of the outflow to fill it up faster.
5 star thank uuu!!
I'm a first time home (and inground pool) owner, and your videos have been extremely helpful!
Great! Water sits in it all the time. I will look for the multiport video.
Thanks a lot. I have broken spa pump don’t know how to replace it.
Thank you sooooo much for breaking this down!. I vaccumed he other day and almost drained my pool with the video I watched. 😭
Very helpful for beginners.I kept loosing prime..but you explained & demonstrated the reason for getting the prime perfectly! I'm confident I'll get it now.
Question: My Sand Filter did come with Skimmer Drain & Main Drain!! What should I place filter on to vaccum?(waste or recirculate?)
When vacuuming regular debris, vacuum on filter (never on recirculate). If you have a lot of algae, vacuum on waste.
I have a Hayward Sand Filter. Does it matter which way I turn the handle to back wash and rinse? Clockwise or counter clockwise ? If the sumo handle has been turned both ways is the device wrecked? Thanks for you clear videos/
Turn the handle clockwise. Turning the handle in one direction wears better. You did not damage the valve turning it counter clockwise. Always turn off the pump before moving.
Thanks for the video, very helpful! I have a Jacuzzi filter and am planning to vacuum due to algae. I was told to always set the filter to waste in these case but this doesn't seem to be an option on my dials. Do I just vacuum on filter or is there an alternative mode I can use? Thanks!
If you do not have a waste position then you should have drain. The drain position is the same as waste. Thanks for watching.
Great videos. I'm a new owner to an older pool, but I don't have the jandy pool valves to open/shut the skimmers or drain to help concentrate the vacuuming suction. Should I just hook up my vacuum to the skimmer that's closest to the pump?
I would recommend putting valves on your skimmer lines and your drain line, this way you can regulate each line. If not you can plug the other skimmer and this will help, however your drain line will still be open and you will lose some suction. Thanks for watching.
Now I am an expert!
Hey Mark, I have the Hayward Goldline Aqua Plus controller panel. Can you tell me how I can turn off the red light next to the "Check System" option on the panel? Thanks.
You can try powering down the system, however there are several different things that could be the problem. You can contact Hayward at customer support and they will be able to help. Thanks for watching.
Where can I get a vacuum plate for Hayward filter system? That seems like a great idea, especially for the first vacuuming of the season.
I do carry vacuum plates, if you email me your contact info l will be glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Mark,
What are your thoughts on this product called "Simple Scoop" the all in one chemical for pools?
BTW, the hand over hand technique is a lifesaver...
Also, my multiport seems to be a little stiff. Anything I can do to loosen it or is that normal? Thanks!
According to the ingredients it is a copper base algaecide which will still require a chlorine sanitizer. As far as the multiport, you can lube. I have several videos on multiport repair. Thanks for watching.
Stick the end of the hose over the water outlet that will force water through and air out
I started to vacuum the pool I cleaned oneside sun came out and I couldn't see this year I had a hard time...I don't have a back wash option I also have a spa it's either turn off water fall or side jets can't do both as I was cleaning the water in the spa went from clear to dirty. I have it on skimmer. I have brand new filters I just put in where I cleaned all the dirt came back please any ideas
If you have a cartridge filter, keep your filters clean and make sure that you have your manifold set properly over your filters. Make sure there is no damage to the manifold as well. Thanks for watching.
Hi Mark, A question for you. I just added a pool algae preventative to the pool. Thi the first time I'm seeing white foam floating on the surface. Looks like the pumps agitation is causing it since when the pump is off over night the foam disappears. How can i get rid of the foam?
Thanks
Davd Bergman
Some algaecides can foam, especially if too much is added. This will not hurt anything and will go away in time. Thanks for watching.
Thanks! Would you recommend vacuuming if you have a cartridge filter?
Yes, even with a cartridge filter you would still vacuum your pool.
Hi Mark. I have an in-ground pool with a Hayward sand filter. I have a decent amount of leaves on my pool floor. If I vacuum the pool on the waste setting, can I remove the filter basket at the pump so all the leaves go through and right out the drain pipe or is the risk of clogging a line too great?
I would not remove either skimmer or pump basket in the risk of clogging the skimmer line or the pump.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies Roger that. Thank you for taking the time to answer.
How do you backwash the filter? Thank you. Does it matter that it is a DE filter? 😊
If your filter has a multi-port valve then you will backwash until sight glass is clear and then you will need to rinse afterwards. Once you are done you will have to add DE back to the filter through means of your skimmer. The amount needed will depend on the size of your filter, your filter label should tell you how much to add.
Mark, instead of priming the hoses on the vacuum , can just connect the vacuum to our skimmer suction and go to our big filter where we have the psi gauge, and just release the air from there to take out all the air out of the system and then when water comes out, we just close the gauge?
If you don’t prime the vacuum hose the pump will loose prime doing it this way. Thanks for watching.
Hello Mark .That was a Great Video. Question : What size Diameter Hose are you using and would you suggest it for a 14k Gallon ganite inground pool (mine) with two skimmers and a Sand Filter system?
1 1/2", this is standard size for all pools. Thanks for watching.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies Thanks Mark!
Hey Mark, I used Clorox brand salt for my pool and it almost seems like it was mixed with rocks and now I have heavy debris at the deep end and it's difficult to pick up. What do you suggest? Keep vacuuming with my bristle head or should I remove it and place the head with rollers on it? Thanks.
If it is salt, you can brush it and it will eventually dissolve. Next time use a better or finer grade of salt. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Mark. Yes, never using that salt again. I'm going to try to vacuum it up. It almost looks like dirt/pebbles mixed in it. I think I'll need to shut the main drain completely for more suction.
We dont have a shut off for our skimmers or drain (or we cant find anything that looks like what you showed in video) This is an older system and a 20x40 pool. We tried all of the other steps with no suction. Any ideas?
A pool that size should have valves for your skimmers and a valve for your drain, if you don’t have individual valves for each line then you might have a 3 way valve or throttle plates in your skimmers if the drain or the skimmers are tied together. A throttle plate will allow you to open or close a drain or skimmer depending on how it is plumbed. You should be able close the drain and one skimmer so you will have enough suction to vacuum. Without seeing what you have it is hard to say, if you would like to checkout my patreon page I will be glad to help. Thanks for watching.
My vac HOSE does not fit into the skimmer suction hole, it’s too small for the hose. should i use the vaccuum plate in this case ?
Yes, and make sure that you leave the skimmer basket in place. You don’t want to clog your skimmer line.
Hi, I just bought a home with an inground pool and to say it's complicated is an understatement. The house is in Spain so the setup is a little different but your video's are helping immensely so thanks 😊
A question if you have time.
The pool has 2 skimmers AND an in-pool connection for the vacuum which the hose connects directly to without any basket. Should I go directly to the waste pipe or continue through the filter to avoid the possibility of clogging ? Also as the pool water is green and full of algae I've been advised to empty the water and refill with clean water. Is there any maintenance I should do whilst empty as I'm sure it hasn't been emptied in over 20 year's. Thanks in advance ☺️
I would vacuum out of the skimmer using a vacuum plate, this way you will not have to deal with any potential clogs. You can drain and clean your pool if it is concrete. If your pool is vinyl then you do not want to empty, you would chemically treat.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies Yeah it's a painted concrete pool with an underground filter room of about 20 year's old
Do you close the 2 drains that go to the filter? Probably not, is my guess, but I am not certain. My pool has 5 valves, not 3, so it is confusing.
Does your system have 5 valves before the pump? Or are some of the valves on the return line? How many skimmers and drains do you have on your pool?
When performing a vacuum process do you leave the jets on or do you turn them off?
You would leave them on.
Hey Mark,
I'm still in the process of vacuuming the pool. I've added some bags of shock. The system is saying that salt is very low. When should I add bags of salt?
You need to have your pool water tested at your local pool store to confirm your salt level. Once the pool is balanced and clear then you can add salt if needed. Thanks for watching.
So when you are vacuum a pool where to you set the filter switch too?
Normally you vacuum in the filter position. If you want to bypass the filter because the pool is extremely dirty, you can vacuum in the waste position.
