    Bought a Tdm 900 last month and changed all the filters and oil. In winter I will watch this video again to replace the timing chain. Thank you for your understandable video👋

    Great, congratulations.
    We say that in general, it should be replaced even when it starts making abnormal noise. But there are tdm that even exceed 100.k without problems. But changing the distribution is important and helps keep the engine in perfect working order.
    This bike is still far ahead in terms of quality compared to many other bikes on the market. It is almost perfection.

      I absolutely agree with you! I think it’s a well underrated bike. It is a lot better than it gets credit for!

    They are NOT Philips head screws! They are JIS head screws! They at a glance look the same, but using a Philips screwdriver on a JIS screw may well ruin it.

    As a TDM 900 owner that's starting to do his own maintenance I love this content. Great stuff! Question: did you feel any symptoms that valve clearance needed to be checked and that it was time for a new timing chain? Or did you do it because it's near 120k? My TDM is at 120k km too and is on it's original chain and last time the valve clearance was checked was at 40k. Thanks!

    • @TheGarage2018
      @TheGarage2018  Před 2 lety +2

      I checked the valve clearance because I bought my TDM900 two years ago and I know nothing about it’s service history. Aaaand because I was bored lol :)). The timing chain I noticed it was quite stretched when I was doing the valve clearance.

    Thanks for this video mate! I wonder if it is recommendable to change the Dampers also? And maybe the tensioner because as i understood the later models are better?

    • @TheGarage2018
      @TheGarage2018  Před 2 lety +2

      You will have to assess that yourself, if the timing chain guides look worn then it makes sense to replace them. If the chain tensioner works I wouldn’t bother replacing it, waste of money IMO.

    Cylinder 1 is next to the timing chain? Like on cars.

    hi thanks for your videos. I have a Yamaha TDM 900 and I have to do valve adjustment and change the timing chain. What is the mileage of your motorcycle at the time of valve adjustment and what is the mileage at the time of changing the timing chain? I wait for your answer please.

    Briliant video.shame about the lost footage. Im going to try to change the timing chain myself because the mechanics dont want to do it.
    Any special tools i need for the process?
    Also would it be easier to put on aftermarket chain that comes with a connection link?

    yo man, I'm am currently doing a valve adjustment my XTZ750 which has basicly the same engine. I have to use some force to rotate the exhaust camshaft to get the marks to align with the Cylinder. Did you had this as well? seems for you the cams rotate very easy. for me I have to use some preasure to rotate them (Because of the valves probably)

    • @TheGarage2018
      @TheGarage2018  Před 2 lety

      Some resistance is to be expected, after all you need to overcome the valve springs. It should be too difficult to rotate the camshafts though. Hope this helps!

    Hi! After applying the chain tensioner I realised the crankshaft is not exactly in tdc anymore, but the camshafts are still timed. Is this correct?

    • @TheGarage2018
      @TheGarage2018  Před rokem +1

      No, it doesn’t seem right…. All should be at TDC

    • @TheGarage2018
      @TheGarage2018  Před 9 měsíci

      I bought the OEM Yamaha timing chain from Fowlers Parts UK if I remember correctly. OEM Part no 94591-40138 You can get an open ended one which needs to be riveted, fiddly and risky job that. Hope this helps.
