  • In this video I demonstrate how I tie myself off when using MRS/DRT to hip thrust up the tree. I demonstrate tying a self-tending blake's hitch which makes DRT a little easier and safer but does have some downsides. Let me know anything in the comments and we will get back to you. Thanks for watching!

I use this method. It's good for short distance tree access. Like 30 feet. Two things can happen with this method. The hitch will get locked, having both ends on tension. Any excess friction within the mrs loop will dramatically decrease the ability to move the hitch upwards. Be ready to reset your locked up hitch in mid-air. A tending pulley from below the hitch is a more reliable and functionaly suitable method. However, extra equipment required.

Double rope technique is where you go through a suitable study fork in the tree that isn’t too tight of an angle. Rope goes up and over the fork/crotch and back down so you have two legs of rope on the ground. You then follow the procedure in this video to slide your Blake’s hitch up. I climbed for the first couple years with just a Blake’s hitch and hip thrusting but now mainly climb SRT and have foot and knee ascenders. 100x easier.
Check out more of my videos. If your question is as simple as knowing what the rope looks like at the top I can make a specific video on that at some point in conjunction with this video. Something like: DRT basic line setting with limited equipment. If you’re just getting into it you’ll just gradually progress into more gear just like I did.
Think of a Y. Rope goes over the Y. Rope on left side attaches to harness with clove hitch, then 6ft tail for Blake’s hitch gets tied to the right side of the rope over the Y. Pull down on right side of rope underneath Blake’s hitch and hip thrust up as you slide Blake’s hitch up.
Hope this helps. I’d like to do some more basic climbing videos. I got all the fancy gadgets now.
