  • It is hard to believe that the 2023 season is long since past and that some people will already have started their 2024 season however this video is the last from my 2023 season and documents a great autumn day out on the moor fishing for brown trout.

    Another excellent video Philip wild lakes are the best even though the fish are small. Bring on the 2024 season and tight lines.

      I hope you will have a great 2024 season Norman. I could have started for a Lewis salmon this week but gave it a miss and will wait until the trout start I think, that's only a few weeks away.

    I do love those wee lochs up in the hills, one of my favourites was Loch Drunkie in the Trossachs, not big fish, but plenty of them

      You can't beat the wild brownies in a hill loch, even if they are small or hard to get. It won't be long until we are getting at it again.

      Our salmon season is already open! Hopefully I will get a cast for trout soon and think I'm pretty much sorted to go. I hope you get all the stuff you need and are soon out there yourself.

      I hope you will have a good season down there in the far south 🙂 not long now. I never do well for trout early in the year but might try and get out in march just to get a cast.

      @@caorach3354 ha, yes, we’re very far south but I can still make out Lewis and Harris from Waternish, although not today! I swear I can see your brew boiling on a very clear day. Thank you, yes hopefully we’ll get some good fishing in too, down here near the equator this season.

    True what you said Philip it’s not all about the fishing, you had some really heavy showers but fair play you stuck at it, look forward to some new videos to come 👍🏼👍🏼

      No one would really walk out there if it were just for the wee fish but it is just such an interesting place and an enjoyable day so great to combine a cast with the walk. The new season is nearly upon us again so maybe there will be some 2024 videos to come.

    Couldn’t agree more. The walk over the moor to get to the fishing is a great part of the day out. The further the better with the prospect of great fishing as a bonus. Takes me back to the days of my youth. Really like these videos where you include both. All the best for next season.

      Thank you Colin, glad you enjoyed it. The actual catching of fish is just a bonus and an excuse for a day out in all these fantastic places.

    Great video Philip. Landscape as ever open and free! Weather mixed bag as usual. I suppose the lochs can only support small fish due to lack of potential food? A great day out to celebrate the end of the trout season!!😂😂

      @caorach3354  Před 5 měsíci +1

      The odd thing is that some lochs hold big fish and the truth is I can never see a pattern or predict which loch will be better just by looking at them. Clearly you must be correct and feeding must limit growth but there is more to it than that and I wish I could work it out. That is part of the fun as when I walk to a loch I don't know then I've no idea what is in it and it is possible that no one has fished it in years. I love the exploring.

    Hi Philip - gorgeous scenery and some nice wee trout. They are very dark in colour. I guess the generally small size is a result of lack of food?? I dont see any bushes or trees, so there wouldnt be a lot of insects available for the trout? Anyway hope to see more of your fishing videos in 2024. Until then, take care and all the best. Cheers Doug (from Down Under)

      Hi Doug, The lochs are very acidic with a pH of around 4 to 4.5 as they sit on peatland that is largely dominated by sphagnum plus all the geology is gneiss. This means that the lochs aren't very fertile though some of them can produce pretty reasonable insect hatches. The fish tend to be small and in the 1/4 to 1/2lb range on many lochs but for reasons I can't explain some lochs can produce really good quality fish up to maybe 6lb. As I've documented in one of my previous videos there is a very remote loch I sometimes fish that used to produce fish around 5lb but then it changed and it was producing big numbers of really fantastic fish of the 1 - 2lb size. These days it produces very small numbers of extremely small trout! I simply can't explain that as there has been no human impact on this loch. Given all of this I think there is a lot we don't know about the productivity of these lochs. You might find the photo on the following web page interesting as it was taken by Tormod an t-Seoladair on the loch in this most recent video - the loch where I talk about his shieling - and as you can see in the image there is a fishing rod and net and a basin of what appear to be good quality trout that might be well over the 1lb size. I believe this photo was taken in the late 1800s and know that the last year Tormod went to the shieling was 1947 so it can't be any later than that. No one goes to this loch, no one fishes it, but if the fish in the photo came from this loch then it offers a clear demonstration of the way in which the fish population can change over time - the Lewis folks maintain that the lochs need to have good numbers of fish taken from them to keep the quality up and when the shielings were occupied then fish would have been caught and killed every day during the summer for food and there were at least 3 or 4 families living out here. Anyhow, here's the page with the photo: tormodsite.wordpress.com/

      Hi Philip - thanks so much for your detailed reply - fascinating. WOW - that photo is something else isnt it. That must have been an extremely hard life out there - nice bucket of fish though. Maybe the loch was overfished in those days, but you'd think it would have recovered by now? My folks are from the border country - Midlothian area. My father use to tell me stories of my grandfather going out trout fishing overnight. Sometimes he;d come home in the morning with a basket full of trout - sometimes nothing lol. But then - thats fishing eh? Cheers Doug@@caorach3354

    Considering how windy it was your voice audio was superb. More than anything, wind noise makes many videos unwatchable. Great work!
    I tried watching a few videos of trout fishing in Assynt the other day they were painful to listen to which was a great shame.

      It is a pain Fred and impossible to completely solve but you just have to try your best. Not long now until you are getting the rod out and starting up with the fishing videos again.

    Hi again Philip - do you practice catch and release with all the fish you catch? Cheers Doug

    • @caorach3354
      @caorach3354  Před 5 měsíci

      Most of the fish I catch go back but occasionally I keep one or two if I fancy them for dinner. For salmon I tend to fish right at the end of the season when the fish are coloured and so I don't keep them at all. I think many of the lochs I fish would benefit from a goodly number of fish being taken from them but they are so remote and so rarely fished that this isn't practical.

      Hi Philip - when my Gran was alive, and we were holidaying in Scotland when we caught some trout she would cook them in oatmeal - absolutely delicious lol. Happy days Cya@@caorach3354
