I have never been keen on very noisy bikes, as I use my bikes for everyday transport. But last year I bought a small bike for town transport, being Euro 5, it was whisper quiet, eventually I knocked out a couple of baffles, not because I wanted to make more noise, but because I got fed up with smartphone zombies stepping out directly in front of me.
Just buy a new "muffler" that has no muffling whatsoever so it looks like it has a muffler, but is basically straight piped. Then you can say "I don't know why its so loud, the muffler is on."
There is nothing like a Triumph muffler sweet sound. I put a pair of Hooker headers on my CL450 Honda, no one would ride with me I put the stock mufflers back on.
Sounded great, like a proper motorcycle. I've got an x-pipe and British Customs predator pros on my Triumph t120 and it sounds great - increased power too.
Removing the silencers will normally cut the power at the lower engine speeds. You have removed the back pressure so some of the mixture escapes before it fires. There is no advantage to doing this at all unless you have set up for racing. There is a compromise but the standard exhaust of that 500 are the best it can have.
I prefer fitting rear footrests at 45 degrees angle so they folds upwards/backwards. Back in the sixties many of us had straight pipes. But they shall be longer. Otherwise you gets less power. Pipes about the length of the muffler. Also bigger main jets. Got bad hearing back then. Funny thing, fitted an original muffler instead of an aftermarket to the Vincent. Much louder and plus 7 Mph top speed.
Anyone who is fortunate enough to have a vintage Triumph, deserves the right to run it however they want. I was around in the 50's and 60's when Triumphs were truly simply great motorcycles. I am 82, and my 99 Harley Softail Custom has open drag pipes. But I live a couple of miles from a small town. But I have a soft spot in me for vintage Triumphs. I have ridden many but the 650c with the high pipes, single carb, and knobby tires was a hoot to ride in the dirt or on the road.
Are you near Portland now? You should meet up with Mike from Mighty Garage youtube channel and do a video. He's got some cool Triumphs, Nortons and Vincents. I'm pretty sure he's in the Portland area. You guys could do a cool cross over episode. At the very least, he's a good guy to know if he's local to you.
Its always fun to hear what your bike sounds like without mufflers on, then the practical side (or tinnitus) kicks in. Thanks as always for the vid. I'm looking for an old Triumph any tips on which ones are good to pick up?
Probably the most plentiful models are the T140 Bonneville 750s from the 70s and early 80s, which are cheaper than the 60s 650s, certainly here in the UK. You can still buy almost all the parts for these, new, off the shelf from quite a few specialists, so they are a very practical classic to own (I've had my 78 T140V for 29 years now). I tried starting mine up a few years ago without the silencers (mufflers) fitted to see what it sounded like, but, to be honest, it wasn't much louder than with the Norton style pea-shooters it normally has (they are straight-through anyway).
I have the fat vintage style Harley fishtails on my 1965 TR6. Defy sounds real good without pissing off your neighbors. Add a bike must have some back pressure to work properly.
Had a Mk 2 Bsa Spitfire. and would run it like this until my confidence would fail .police were very hot back then . but if you did intend to run straight through pipes all the time you would have to alter the jetting a little !
A straight pipe is loud. However if you really want to hear something great, put a set of Megaphones on the straight pipe. I have seen many of the old Triumph's, Norton Manx, Commando's, BSA Gold Stars, AJS, Benneli, etc race at the Vintage TT races. You really should find the closest Vintage TT race and you will be amazed! I put a set of performance TT pipes on my Bonneville with built in silencers. The silencers are short little pea shooter type mufflers. They are very loud when I ride hard. Not too bad if I take it easy. The pipe is oversize on these pipes. I had to rejet up three sizes on account of the pipes and K+N filters. You can gain a nice amount of power by improving the breathing on your bike.
They run leaner and pump harder with out the muffler. Your twin is a slight change compared to a what a 1977 Honda 750Four four into one changes to with the muffler removed. It turns into a Lion from a pussy cat.

Yes, it was fun for a short while for you and your daughter, but no mufflers kills your torque on low revs and during acceleration and the feeling the bike got faster is just a feeling nothing more. Makes your fuel consumption lower as well and certainly annoys neighbors, and everybody riding / driving behind you. Other than that original Triumph exhaust has such a great sound not too laud but with this bass undertone in it. Makes it sound like a much bigger motorcycle than it really is.

@@at9670 Yeah not wanting to disturb everyone in a 100m radius means you're bitter. But then you all literally modify the exhaust to remove all the environmental measures; no point in expecting you to understand sound pollution when you all don't even care about air pollution.

Daughter sharing Dad's excitement is best. Remember my brother taking the cans off his Matchless for same reason. Didn't run too well.
Love that unique Triumph tick-over sound. Way back in 1979 I had a 1970 T100P and I too removed the mufflers. Loved it. Greetings from Ireland.
Ten years earlier I waas doing the same with my 1958 350. It seems that those lovely Triumph twins make the same noise regardless of capacity.
Fuck it run straight headers🤘😎 loud pipes make smiles!
They help in traffic too 😂 🤘

I did the opposite of this to my bike 4 months ago, making it less louder, because i need to go out at 5am and doesn't want to wake the neighbor up.
Hey that's valid!

So cool! Personaly, i went strictly old school, i've made holes (with a concrete drill) in the cylinder chamber. The sound is "powonderfull"!!!
I love the uneven idling, like a proper idle should sound!😍👌
Back in the day, everyone ran shorties on Triumph, BSA, Honda CB's.

Sounds great
The stock exhaust system sounds good to me. The straight pipe wasn't all that loud and like the saying goes "Loud pipes save lives".
Cheers from France !
Well, it's louder that way but you lose the nice lope and cadence amongst the cacophony.

I think the later Daytona's are great options for not to much money, 70 to 73. Prices are getting crazy though for all of them

ahh!..that sweet sound of open pipes on a triumph
Music to my ears… did the same thing to my Bonni. The stock mufflers are super heavy.
I would totally do this 😂 👍
Now you have no necessary Back Pressure… it will not run good without it.
Those old Triumphs actually sound good with straight pipes
But you need to buy aftermarket pipes that do not shrink down in diameter & run pipes that go past the rear axle for the best sound and performance.

Sounds better than a Harley...
Take this rubber from steel "stick" and rotate only rubber part not the whole peg.
You can get drag pipes for that..they look stock...but are straight pipes...i highly suggest em🤫😛

I think it sounds great!
Definitely straight pipes or a more aggressive muffler than what you had on there, lol.
Now take the air filter off and put on a velocity stack!

If you're really going to do that you need to fatten up the mix a bit. It'll run lean and that's not good for motorcycles.
