What's your favourite pickup combo in a Strat?
Fender custom shop 69 , DiMarzio FS1 .
CS 69 and CS Texas Specials and my old fender 1974 grey bottoms
Some HSS with some hambucker split-coil setup for bridge.
In the context of typical Strat pickups, I absolutely love the V60 (early '60s, gray bottom/purple wire) trio wound by Bryan Gunsher of BG Pickups in my prototype. It seems that he no longer offers them, but they are excellent examples of their type and sound more expensive than they cost. :P Straying from the norm, Leo Fender's single-coil MFD pickups in the G&L S-500 and Z-Coil MFDs in the Comanche are wonderful (the former being more normal than the latter).
I’m a Wilde (Bill & Becky) twin blade man myself ;)
Baddassery with the Ty Tabor licks there, Mr. Todd. You've got some of the best Strat tones around.
Looking forward to new Ragdoll music. Your last album is still on constant rotation with me. My daughter is now playing it as well.
Taking care of your hands and arms is a must!
Those Michael Landau pickups sound fantastic!
The Midnight. The pinnacle of Synthwave...songwriting, performances, production...they have it all and it sets them above the others (just my opinion). And I have to thank YOU for turning me on to them. I'd never even heard of synthwave until you video that you played over "Crystaline". And now I keep experimenting with synthwave. Either doing just pure synthwave, or making it my own thing with 80's pop/rock components as well. Thanks for opening my eyes to this kind of music!
I couldn’t love the Midnight anymore. Would love to catch a live show.
Your heartfelt words were inspirational. I watch you regularly and I respect all that you do. I will continue to follow you and your fantastic channel!
Thanks mate! I appreciate it in a huge way.
11:00 that tone man! I so so want that tone. Epic stuff bro.
Now that you've got a PRS you need to get a Strat :p
Another cool Synthwave act with metal guitars, is McRocklin & Hutch, by Thomas McRocklin ( Steve Vai's protege from the 90's). They also feature people like Michael Angelo Batio or Jordan Rudess on some of their songs.
🙌🙌🙌🙌 I love McRocklin and Hutch! Simply incredible duo. Tom has a CZcams channel
Sykes is def the king of vibrato. Love your channel man
Loved my Lace Sensor Gold set for cleans, but Fender Generation 4 noiseless hot set pickups are pure🔥
Thanks Leon. Those pickups do sound great. Cordy has Lollars in his blue K-Line, those are also excellent.
I've got a Strat-90 P90 type from creamery pickups in my strat bridge and i really like it. Fatter and smoother than stock but still sounds like a single coil. John Cordy borrowed it and gave it a try out last year
love that guitar man
My fave single coils are the Wilde Pickups micro coils, designed by Bill Lawrence. Fave pickups in a strat overall is probably tex mex mid and neck, super distortion in the bridge.
I've got Suhr pickups in my Strat (HSS) too. 2 V60LPs and a SSH+. I love them now, but they took some getting used to. I've got another Strat with USA 57/62 singles and a Shawbucker, and in comparison the Suhr pickups are really muscular sounding. They're really dynamic, but mostly they just sound huge! SSH+ is pure girth!
Agree completely on the prices of 70s Strats. I've always wanted one, but they're creeping further away all the time. Most are awesome guitars, but to expensive now to mod to your taste. That job belongs to the Amercan Standard now. You can trip over a used one at a good price, medium jumbos and flatter radius boards make it slighty more modern to play, and they're basically indestructible! I've had my 2003 Ash body for a year and its a bit of a brute to play, but its my #1 now. I'm keeping an eye out for others
Great clip again Leon. Thanks for all that you do. Cheers
On FX order the most interesting / ambiguous one to me is chorus. I'm used to putting it in the FX loop before delay and reverb, but Euge has a video where he is very adament that it should be before the amp and otherwise sounds like sh*t. Could be a fun thing to explore in a video?
I also have a 1977 Stratocaster. I replaced the tremolo with a Super Vee equipped with Highwood Saddles, and the guitar sounds much more open and louder with increased sustain.
Hey Leon! So I had my first gig with a new band this past weekend. Learned their whole set list in a week and a half(36 songs). 🥵 Rolled the kemper out too, no problems at all had an amazing night, BUT I’d like to start using an iem unit and haven’t had a lot of experience with them. Would I be able to get by with the cheapest unit I can find? Suggestion on what model? Not even sure I’ll like having something stuffed in my ear all night. Thanks man!
My fav strat pickups for the vintage tone is Dumarzio HS4 staked version. They realy rock in any type of blues or old scool Rock 🤘
Yea ive tried lots of custom shop pickups, but i found Dimarzio HS Stacked Pickups sound the best and
keep up with Hot Humbuckings. I have the HS3 Stacked for bridge
Question sir:
Would this work as a pedal board direct solution?
Wah, then
Distortion pedal or overdrives and boosts, then modulation, then delay and reverb pedals, then cab sim pedal and then a direct box or two straight to FOH?
All in one pedal board to use for live especially where amps are not allowed or low stage volume is required. Of course an active speaker for monitoring might be good too, or just use the PA monitors provided. ???
I was also thinking of using a splitter maybe to do direct monitoring and going to FOH.
What cab sim pedal would you use? What distortion pedal for high gain?
Thanks brother and sorry for the hard questions. 😂
Be well sir. ❤🤘🤟
If you get a chance, I highly recommend Wolf and Raven, they got some blistering guitar solos. Check out "On The Run".
I really like the DiMarzio Injector pickups in my FRM100.
Happy WA Day Leon. Thoughts on Eastern States bands/artists headlining WA Day concert this year?
HEy good video im looking for a single coil for cente along with the SD distortion i have in the bridge..any recommendations??
The motion epic, mcRocklin & Hutch and Ultraboss too
I am very impressed. They do not lose the the Strat chime and bell tone quality. no one seems to care that their Strat sounds more like a Burns than a Strat with only just a tiny bit of glassy sound left.
Nice bit of Kings x👍
The ML Standards are now called the V63+. They've been my go-to single-coils for the last five years or so. I do have a guitar coming with V70s. John pushes the V60LP pretty heavily, but i don't care for the bridge pickup as much. I do have a guitar with them and will leave it in, just because it really is a different sound. I just prefer the ML Standard/V63+ pretty significantly.
Ahhhh I didn't realise the name changed!
@@LeonTodd
It was really recently, like maybe late 2022... ? I didn't realize it until I put in a custom order and noticed that that name had changed... 🤣
Thanks. I knew they'd changed the name but I can never remember what became what. I think Pete Thorn also mentions the V60s a lot.
@@onesandzeros
He does! I've seem a few videos of his with the V60's. I think his latest signature model has the V63 (the regular, not the plus, which is the old ML Standard) in the middle and neck.
Any chance you can fix the position of the Strap Button on the top horn of the Strat… not an injury but always noticed how out of position it is lol
Thank you in advance!
The Suhr strat pickups have more sparkle top end?
King's X riffs *never get old*
Never
ZETA is my favorite synthwave project. Very guitar based. It’s Paul Ortiz aka Chimpspanner on guitars and Dan Tompkins of TesseracT for vocals.
I discovered John Sykes thru an anime called Black Heaven or somthing like that 😂 his song Cautionary Warning is the theme song!
Hahaha I didn't know that, that's wild
What's your opinion on the "Horns For A Halo" record by Elegant Weapons???
I've tried Suhr ML's, but they are too compressed for my taste. I prefer Lollar Special S for my HSS strat, with a Lollar Imperial in the bridge. It's a perfect match! But you make anything sound awesome, Leon-a real tone wizard right there!
Lollar makes amazing stuff!
I checked online and they have classic and standard pickups. Which one should I go for?
I really enjoy Peter Tosh's version of Johnny B. Goode. A truly Sunshine Reggae classic.
i have ML's in my '62 reissue strat. they are the best.
11:00! Heavenly Sparkly Clean tone! Are you using the Fractal here? Pls share your clean preset
Yep. look up my Rockman preset on axechange
@@LeonTodd awesome thank you! Btw is the body of your Strat made of Ash or Alder?
@@briandgr8stAlder body.
Over my head 🤟
Lollar Dirty Blonde Set. Vintage 50's N & M with a Hotter ( less ice picky & higher output ) Bridge single-coil. My tone-search ended . . . finally. oNe LovE from NYC
Est les 65 custom Shop?
Ok WHICH ML pickups are they? Suhr offers 2 versions of the ML’s.. Thanks!!
This is the Suhr ML Standard pickup, now renamed V63+.
Hi Leon! Check out Dance with the dead record "Loved to death" Very cool melodic synth music with metal guitars! 🤘🙂
Oooh this is good!
Chuck Berry is the single most influential rock icon of all. The true King.
11:00 - when you really get high from the sound!
Are those p/u's stacked or true single coil?
Prettybsure they're true singles. They hum.
@@LeonTodd sorry for another question if you have time: Are they hum-cancelling, (reverse wound) in positions 2 and 4 ?...thanks !
@@lifeisShort66 yes indeed!
"Chuck Berry licks with 80s guitar tone"
I feel like this is a reductive description of CC era Poison songs. 😆
hahaha bang on
Lundgren BJFE. Outstanding!
Duncan Jb vs Duncan Distortion ?
JB. But Custom for me
Suhr Classic S Antiques got the ML Singlecoils. I own two of them..a SSS and a HSS with an Asatobucker. Best new strats imho. Lost every interest in fender cs guitars.
Blasphemous, no doubt, but I sometimes think I enjoy John Sykes more as a lead singer than a lead guitarist. (His rhythm riffing is unassailable, of course.) When I first heard live recordings of him I was impressed by how much he sounded like Lynott on the Lizzy songs and like Coverdale on the Whitesnake songs. Not 'close your eyes and you'd be fooled' level mimicry or anything, but he definitely learned from the best.
His voice is amazing isn't it? Definitely taken the best bits of Phil and DC and put it all together into something that just soars.
DI marzio single coils are the best pickups arround the world !!
Check out GAS pickups from Greece.....amazing products
SUHR ML-STANDARD is the best 👍。
Suhr v63
You're a real mensch Leon, and I agree with your ears on just about every tone you pull, but funnily enough we completely disagree on what makes a good strat tone. The MLs and the SS wire makes that strat way too strident to my ears. Also your neck clean/edge of breakup tone is way too bassy. I don't like to hear those frequencies distort. Don't hate me 😅
This is why guitar is so fun :p
Yep, Judas Priest.
Merci!
Stop the chorus man, ridiculous sound!
