That’s because most likely houses and hotels were already on the board, and by staying in jail will reduce your chance of landing on those tiles for a few turn, while you can still collect some money from your investments.

    Favorite part of the game for me is the deals mid game. I literally mortgage properties to pull my money out then make deals for the prices I want. Sometimes I could hold properties from people I don't like if they mouth off but most of the time, I help people mid to late game if they were cool. Auctions are also fun too. Especially when you raise someone out of the bid or raise/bait someone into bidding more than what the original price is to make them spend more. Surprisingly, Monopoly when played with intellectuals is some of the sweatiest Gaming I've ever played.

    Very informative video. Thank you very much. I believe there was an error as regards mortgaged property changing hands. The official rule book says "Whenever a mortgaged property changes hands between players, either through a trade, sale or by bankruptcy, the new owner must immediately pay 10% interest on the mortgage and at their option may pay the principal or hold the property. If the player holds the property and later wishes to lift the mortgage they must pay the 10% interest again as well."
    But I liked your video. It helped me clarify some of the rules.

What if the transaction with the bank is happening as the person is rolling the dice? The Speed Die was introduced in 2006 (which is why I don't have one), but I looked it up for you!
      The Speed Die is not used in determining doubles; it is used in determining triples. If triple 1s, 2s, or 3s are rolled, the player may move forward to any space on the board, and the player does not roll again.
      If a player rolls two doubles and then a triple, they do not go to jail, but after they move to whichever spot on the board they wish, and the player does not roll again.
      The Speed Die is not used when trying to roll your way out of jail.
      If you roll:
      - 1, 2, or 3: Add the rolled number to the normal dice total.
      - Mr. Monopoly: Move according to the normal dice, and take that turn as normal. Before rolling again or passing the dice to the next player, move to the next unowned property, which they may buy or auction. If there are no unowned properties, the player moves to the nearest unmortgaged property owned by an opponent. In the event that all opponents' properties are mortgaged, do nothing.
      - Bus: You can choose to move the value of both of the white dice, or just the value of one white die. For example, if a player rolls a 2 and a 6 and a Bus, then that player can choose to move 2, 6, or 8 spaces.

      And number two, no, it gets auctioned to the highest bidder.
      Mortgaging means to voluntary not make any rent from that property (or the whole property group, if you have buildings on them) for some cash

      You don't have to unmortgage immediately, but you do have to pay the 10% when you take ownership. If you unmortgage when you take ownership, you only pay the 10% once, if you wait until later to unmortgage you have to pay the 10% again.

But if I had a Monopoly game I would probably win. Having experience in life in buying houses and selling helps and dealing with the real world as an adult. Kids don't understand some of these things. Yeah, we would make up our own rules. And even cheat.

  • @awolf913
    @awolf913 Před 6 lety +1

    Slight correction, when you have a mortgaged property that you trade with an opponent, the opponent in question does not necessarily have to unmortgage the property straight away. Instead the opponent can just pay 10% interest on the property and leave it mortgaged until a potential later time. If he/she leaves it mortgaged, they have no choice but to pay this 10% interest to the bank, it has to be paid. On the other hand, if the opponent chooses to unmortage at a turn later than straight after receiving the mortgaged property, then he/she must pay the mortgage cost plus 10%.

    • @JohnPelagides
      @JohnPelagides Před 6 lety +1

      And that 10% mortgage fee is calculated from the mortgage amount. Example. You receive a mortgaged train station from another player. You choose not to pay the mortgage. But you instead pay the 10% only. In this case the mortgage fee amount is $100 x 10% equals $10 mortgage fee. Pay $10 to the bank and receive the mortgaged train station.
      Later you want to unmortgage the train station. Pay the $100 mortgage plus the 10% mortgage interest. Total paid is $100 plus 10% equals $110. Paid to the bank.

    • @awolf913
      @awolf913 Před 6 lety

      John Pelagides thank you. Also what happens if you are electrd chairman of the board to pay each player $50? But, what if you don't have enough money to pay each player? Does the money go to the bank? Or do you have to split your money as evenly as possible then go out the game?
