- www.DickProenneke.com - There were 4 one hour videos produced on Dick Proennekes life up at Twin Lakes. "Alaska Silence & Solitude" is the follow up to "Alone in the Wilderness", filmed about 20 years later. Bob Swerer and Bob Swerer Sr. visit Dick Proenneke at his famous cabin on Twin Lakes where wildlife is still abundant and the scenery is spectacular. Bob Swerer has taken the best footage from Dick's films and he has created 4 videos about Dick, "Alone in the Wilderness", "Alone in the Wilderness part 2", "Alaska, Silence and Solitude" and "The Frozen North". You can purchase all of them in DVD format from the www.DickProenneke.com website.
He left the cabin due to old age in 1999, returning to live with his brother in California and passed away in 2003. His cabin is now in the care of the national park authorities and you can visit the cabin. It is a tourist attraction.
Can i sleep in there?
@@JeffSh00ts Yes you can.
@@JeffSh00ts The door is open, but the structure hasn't been maintained in decades, and the roof could kill you if it collapses.
@@djhenyo Not true; the cabin is maintained quite well. I visited there for 5 days in 2021. Camped in the woods around the lakes and hiked a lot.

This man has lived a million mens dreams!
no stopping any of us but our own doubts. we can all do this
All* Mens Dream
Almost our dreams, only thing missing is an attractive woman.
Very few people could do what he did. Living 30 years like he did with the tools he had. No electricity. You have to be extremely skillful and tough to achieve what he did. None of the people here commenting could do what he did.
Oi vey...
This man has inspired me to build my dream homestead. I can feel his spirit every time I watch these old movies. I wish there were more !😀

Proenneke is still a legend up here in AK .My grandfather and great uncle used to travel to Twin Lakes by mule . They brought along coffee - tea - sugar - flour - cornmeal and other goods for Mr. Proenneke .
Can't do without the coffee can we? :). What a remarkable tale.
What year did he die?

I totally wish I could do what he did.
I would watch this entire show every year when it would come on PBS before the internet. Never get tired of it . What an amazing life and amazing craftsman.
This guy literally did what Bob Ross painted! That's dope!
Can’t you speak English ever?
I'm seven years into my remote life. These old films would captivate me but not so much anymore.
It's nice to be away from people but it is a hard life. In some ways my life is better that what Dick
lived, but in some ways not as good. I have the luxury of LED lights, and lithium batteries. A small
PV panel gives me all the power I need in the summer. A little more difficult in the winter. I was
raised in the country and was prepared for my transition to a remote and solitary life. Still, it wasn't
easy. The first several years showed where I failed to plan adequately. The life alone is difficult and
takes planning to make the transition. The first five years were difficult. When I do visit the city and
see people from my old life I hear them talk about their daily lives and think of how sad they truly are.
Remote life and on CZcams eh?? 😂😂
It's not a competition brother 🫶
Those birds REALLY trusted him. That's extremely hard to do and takes lots of patience. What good soul.
Watching the birds eat out of Dick's hand tells me he's become as much a part of that landscape as the trees and mountains.
Incredible.
He has food for them. It's not that amazing😄
@@alan4sure take some bird seed, put it in your hand, go outside, and see how many birds come land on your hand to eat out of it. Then come back and tell me it's just the bird seed.
@@MH3GL in the Cdn Rockies, in the National Parks it used to be very common, year 'round. You didn't need food to attract birdd, they expected it and showed up. It was annoying sometimes, them stealing snacks. There are fewer birds nowadays unfortunately.
@@alan4sure That's a park with birds who are used to handouts. This is the wilderness with wild animals.
So alone and then the bird lands in his hand. He's not alone. He's without people and thats pure bliss ❤🙏👍
Wait without people he would not have a camera, or a zodiac raft, or a pilot to take him out there, he would not know language to share with us his life.... people are a blessing in disguise. It’s hard to realize but true.

My life is so confusing, at 67 it shouldn't be my own fault, makes me feel good to see a man that is truly happy with his life.
This never gets old! Amazing man who has inspired me to appreciate the finer things in life. The hell with cities, crowds, and money sharks.
@Greg Grimer Greg, Greg, Greg, I fear you miss the whole point. Sad.
I agree greedy pieces of shit want people like us to work our ass off while they steal our money and basically pay no taxes
@Christina Reynolds Because it's not about whether he benefited from today's tech, of course he did. Even the indigenous people there today benefit from it. It was about getting back to what in today's world would be as close to freedom from the rat race as is possible. Not many of us could pull it off even with today's tech to help us. I admire him a lot. I watch this over again quite often and I'm always inspired and just a little jealous. But I pursue my dream in my own way and it is rewarding even if I'm not in Alaska. The Appalachians where I am retired are quite nice. But of course, there's still taxes and pollution to deal with lol!

Yes i agree totally
That's becuz this is the way we were created to live, to LIVE not chase the dollar or worship mammon
Just a few hundred years ago a large portion of the population lived this way. They survived by farming, hunting, fishing, bartering with neighbours and were basically in charge of their own destinies
You don't even have to go that far. 100-200 years ago
The most fascinating story I’ve ever watched, Alone in the Wilderness.
To walk out your front door every day and to live, breath and exist in that space, that wilderness WOW!
Except all the times it’s freezing and miserable with nothing to do
I sat on the seat of a freezing cold outhouse relieving myself once in the White Mountains during winter. It was a memorable experience.
@@lamBETTERthanY0U The whole point went right over your head.
I really admire his woodworking skills. Something my generation and younger is missing. We spent too much time on computers and not enough learning how to use hand tools.
I'll say. Some can't even change lightbulbs. 😄
I am ashamed to concede that you’re correct. I _can_ change a lightbulb . . . that’s about it. But I plan to change that 😅
The caliber of a persons soul is measured by the company they keep. This man was surrounded by all manner of animals who called him friend. He was a man of true warm hearted purity in and out.
And his animal "friends" never forgot about the pistol he packed on his forays away from the cabin.
It’s good to love what you do.
Mr. Proenneke lives the real life. Appreciating all that truly matters. Building with hand tools and what God gave him...blood, sweat & tears. Today, too many people must be entertained by someone or something. There is much to be said about solitude. As young children, my mom mandated hours of solitude in our own rooms. With enrichment material to give us depth. She also tested us upon completion of every book. She ask question and we had to answer what we had read and how we could apply our new knowledge. I am older now and long for those good old days.
Yellowroseoftexas, how extraordinary your wise mother and your childhood! I can't help comparing your experience with my own, in which being alone was viewed with alarm, if not hostility.
Lucky.
This man was a true man.no chainsaws all by hand log cabin.Alot of work.falling trees by hand.a very hard worker. One day i would love to go see his cabin.that would be so cool.
12 hour days, 6 days out of the week, 10 days in he had the heavy logs up he said. With actually rewarding labor such as building your own cabin, i bet his 72 hour work week at 52 feels quite a bit better than my 36 hour workweek at 25
I don’t envy his task. Having done some carpentry, the original video is amazing to watch.
The difference you feel is from fulfillment. A 72 hour work week is by no means easy but at the end you can marvel at what you created. Toiling away 9-5 for someone else’s profit drains that fulfillment for most people.
@@nolanyoung8786 they reward themselves by buying crap though. 😄
Best survivalist of all time. He made that life look easy. Hard worker too.
I knew his brother Ray, very matter of fact stoic brothers
fuck off you toolbag
Michael Rodriguez Whos blind to it?! This mans just doing what he loves and has a passion for. While documenting and filming for his enjoyment, and for those who might enjoy it....Yes he had some supplies flown in, and used some tools that wernt "primative" but so what? Thats not the point of his journey. Hes not out there to prove anything to anyone. Hes out in the alaskan bush to enjoy nature, and the simple living provided by it. Alot of people, myself included are inspired by it and certainly respect it....I dont see how you couldnt!
Michael Rodriguez I just enjoy the outdoors and respect what hes done off the grid. It takes a ton of work, and craftmanship to do what hes done.
He’s not the best survivalist of all time. That’s just bullshit.
Look up Sylvan Hart.
Imagine spending a few weeks up there with him??!!! My God! Dude was blessed in so many ways…🙏🏻
These documentaries are wonderful, god bless Dick Proenneke. What a wonderful and gifted man !!!
This story couldn't be any better.
This video is so therapeutic. Like I could watch this over and over forever. His voice is also really calming and this is like straight up asmr.
I’m very fortunate to have my own cabins in the wilderness not far from Twin Lakes. Dick was a friend of my in-laws and visited often on Lake Clark. He even made my mother-in-law one of his famous spoons. As a pilot I’ve never flown through Lake Clark Pass and not thought about those before and those that’ll come after.
“Some say God was tired when he made it and some say it’s a fine land to shun. And there’s some who would trade it for no land on earth and I’m one” Robert Service
I remember watching this in black and white.. I love this guy.. “ today, I am gonna make a wooden spoon”. A real role model. I love the way he paddled, I do it the same way , it is a way for me to think of him.
I remember the evolution of the wooden spoons.
It's not for everyone and you certainly need to be at ease with yourself but to me it's the nearest thing to happiness. Him and the few other people, I have watched, including a woman Sara Maitland in Scotland, look so relaxed, humble, no complaints about the hardship of extreme conditions... they seem to be exactly where they want to be.
A Carpenter and Navy, this man knew allot of skills and his experiences show us that most of us, and certainly myself, can do allot more than what we do.
It's a shame how most men underestimate themselves.
Women have the opposite problem.
Chuck Feazell Sr. If you have the skills, which take a very long time to acquire.
Living in Kodiak prior to his cabin days already has 99% jump on us. Lol I totally respect him for living his simple yet difficult life the way he wanted to, peroid.
I have been watching this story since its release and every time I see any part of it I instantly become relaxed and calm. This man is a truly unique human in these modern times. God certainly blessed him.
Which God?
@@MrAndyLocksmith The one that blessed him. Keep up.
God had nothing to do with his decision or abilities. He is a man of observation and science. Everything he gained he worked for. He was handed nothing.

When I was lost for Three Days I had no distractions and only mental focus. Not about me but the experience was to get out and live regardless of the situation. We Have to live it to understand it! But Dick was in solitude for decades and can only imagine the steps to gain trust with his Environment and the will to gain balance and survive it. Anyone can sit back and watch these video's which He shared. But He lived them and truly humbled by both his dedication and will power. What it comes down to is Mental Focus which will always overpower the physical. Dick molded Himself into his environment which is both Beautiful and for his own message. That is living!!!
