  • Though historically regarded as a mental illness, schizophrenia is a brain disorder. The illness affects 1% of the world’s adult population. Schizophrenia usually starts in late teens or early 20s and is frequently misunderstood. Genetic and environmental changes during fetal life may lead to schizophrenia in adulthood.
    Through intervention with antipsychotic drugs, the chemical imbalance in the brain can be restored. Partial or full recovery is possible in many patients.
