'' You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me it's a full time job. Now behave yourself.''
Michael Caine - Get Carter
I've actually heard this quote used a couple of times on a friday night, before things kicked off in a pub.
Eastern Promises is so underrated
Gangster No. 1 with Malcolm McDowell as an old British kingpin in the late 1990’s narrating his rise to infamy in the 1970’s felt like a perfect marriage of Long Good Friday/Get Carter style movies with young him (played in a twisted fashion by an early hungry Paul Bettany) ascending through the crime ranks is like two Brit crime gems in one. VERY under rated Brit movie plus AMAZING MCDOWELL
Long Good Friday is the best British mob movie. Bob hopskins great performance, Great soundtrack, terrific cast and Pierce Brosnan debut. What more can you ask for. But I’m surprised gangster no.1 is not on the list.
Bob's acting in the taxi at the end of The Long Good Friday is more than many actors achieve in their whole careers - and he doesn't say a thing - it's all in his facial expressions as he taken away by the IRA.
Love the shout-out for Layer Cake, one of my favorite films!
Wow - With that title and leaving Snatch out of the list is a bold move.
Because of Layer Cake, I can never listen to Ordinary World the same way ever again, or at least not without thinking about the diner scene.
I am the same way with Queen 'Don't stop me now' and Shaun of the Dead.
@@danieljob3184 "Why is Queen still on!?" "We have a situation!" "I know!"
Similar to 'Stuck in the Middle With You' in Reservoir Dogs too... Always hear that and think of Michael Madsen cutting off a cops ear.
You need to rename this video as 10 movies that i now need to rewatch! All fantastic films!!
All good movies, but The Italian Job doesn't belong here. It's a heist/caper movie. It feels like they were trying too hard NOT to put Guy Ritchie films on this list that they padded it with TIJ and threw him at the bottom. I say put him up in the top 5 where his films belong, and find something more in the genre you're discussing. The Italian Job is a great movie, it's just being mislabeled here.
Thank you for the great list. You gave me a few new films to checkout.
Please, keep up the great work which you and team create.
I'm sad Snatch didn't make it but I'm ecstatic Layer Cake was shown love.
in bruges is one of my top 5 favourite movies ever.
you need to see it if you haven't yet
No Limey? Great film and one of the best audio commentary tracks ever recorded.
In Bruges, Eastern Promises are both highly recommended, yes. Layer Cake was good, too.
Don' you go Rounin' Roun to Re Ro is the best British Gangster flick.
Dude “Snatch” not being on the list is a crime. Seriously!
"best Michael Caine performance... to date". I'm impressed by try optimism of that statement.
Michael Caine nailed every role I've seen him in. He even saved "On Deadly Ground" a Action movie staring Steven Seagal making it a watchable movie.
RIP Bob Hoskins you'll always be Eddie Valiant to me anyway
I saw him in a play with Hellen Mirren it was called the duchess of malfi and he was brilliant especially at strangling Hellen Mirren to death in a very gory way! Yeah I’m a gen X so I’m dodging graves 👻💀
Awesome list, some I've not seen & look forward to doing so.👍👍👍👍
Didn't know Mario was a gangster.
So happy to see In Bruges being on this list such a good film!
Get Carter is just a fantastic piece of film work, the bleak settings and the pacing of the film really add texture to what is happening
Layer cake was superb thank you Jules!
Mike Hodges' _Croupier_ belongs in the Top 5.
_Eastern Promises_ is a Canadian film starring an American about the Russian mob. If "British-adjacent" is the bar, John Boorman's _Point Blank_ should rank.
And this list is missing the greatest Brit crime film of all time:
_Don' You Go Rounin' Roun To Re Ro_
The Long Good Friday deserves the top spot! The soundtrack is glorious, bits and pieces making their way into some of the best pop music.
Thanks for the vid, I'm going to check out two of the movies from that list.....Layer Cake and The Long Good Friday
You put some Snatch scenes in when you were talking about
Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels.
Love the symmetry of having P. H. Moriarty in the first and last entries on this list.
Great list some unlucky movies to miss out though. Snatch is arguably better than lock stock, Gangster No 1 could probably be on this list & the one of the most underrated movies ever Rise of The Foot Soldier. The first one is British cinema at its best.
Long Good Friday!!!
Brilliant cast in a brilliant script. Bob Hoskins was fond of saying that he had received fan mail... from both of the Kray twins.
B
Nice video
Layer Cake over Snatch? Damn
I was thinking that too. Lock-Stock didn't age half as well. But then, I guess it was the genre defining one.
@@lefroy1 I'd put them both in over Layer Cake, but all 3 are awesome. Just my taste. I would also have Sexy Beast higher and include Love Honour Obey and maybe even Dead Man's Shoes but not quite a gangster film
Come on, its got to be. i mean Snatch its good, but its not Layer Cake is it
Bro! Sexy Beast ranks above the lot of them IMO.. A top-5 all time film for me, for sure.
(and yeah, DMS also amazing!)
@@lefroy1 yes that's why it's in a higher position , was not disputing that. Also DMS is not really a gangster movie, so null and void
Saw the bottom five, can't wait to see the top five. Well done WC.
The Krays (1990) is pretty good and worth a shout, better than Legend IMHO
Heard all titles and watched some of them. In fact I am guilty of owning some of them in Dvds/Blu rays yet haven’t watched them. In Bruges was a wonderful film and the scenery is so good! And the Sauna fighting scene was so memorable!
Great list. Might quibble with the order but all of the greatest are on it.
I love the long good friday.
Huh. Feels odd, i haven't heard about some of these. They look pretty amazing.👍
New list to search ;).
Lovely sentiments at the end thank you
this list aka my homework. only seen a couple of these. need to get to the rest of them.
I love, and own copies of every film on this list.
I'd add just one more: 'Hell Is A City' (1960), starring Stanley Baker, and Billie Whitelaw. Made by Hammer, the horror people, and set in a Manchester that no longer exists. Great performances, luminous photography, it's a top notch thriller, that ends with a rooftop fight, filmed, for real, on a rooftop high over the centre of Manchester, and you can see dozens of people watching, down below.
Top 10 Underrated Dark Comedy Films
Weird that The Krays is not on the list. It’s clearly better than several of the films on this list.
The Italian Job isn't really a gangster film. It's a crime/heist movie, or a caper as Jules mentions in the video, but the characters are robbers (some professional, some not) rather than mobsters. So it should make way for Nic Roeg/Donald Cammell's Performance (1970), which featured James Fox as a gangster trying to get away from his firm and holing up in the crumbling Notting Hill (pre-gentrification) house of fading rock star Turner (Mick Jagger). It's strange and trippy, subverting both music and gangster genres - with the added bonus of featuring actual real-life London gangers in the supporting cast.
I'd have Get Carter as No 2, but The Long Good Friday is definitely my No 1. Bob Hoskin's performance is awesome.
Richard Attenborough wears his hat the same way in Jurrasic Park. Possibly eluding to the carnage that follows in a subtle tell.
The Long Good Friday is a personal favorite. The slow, inevitable unraveling of the plot and what happens to Hoskins' character is gutwrenching.
Best bangers 💯
Caine is in HOW many?!?! Good on you mate!
great choices
Mona lisa is sooo slept on and an amazing film about the Britsh underword . Clarke peters is a demon of a villain as Anderson the Pimp.😈😈😫😫😫. A gangster flick i can watch again and again. Have it on dvd
One thing I noticed about British gangster films is that a lot of them have titles that really don't sound like gangster films. Ok, Get Carter and The Italian Job sure, but Layer Cake? In Bruges? Mona Lisa? Not exactly screaming crime saga, you know? I mean this as a humorous (Sorry, *humourous) observation, not a criticiam, of course...
im suprised 'Gangster No.1' didnt make the list. solid movie that one if you havent seen it you should
Lock, Stock, and 2 Smoking Barrels? My favourite Guy Ritchie British gangster movie is Rock 'n' Rolla...
There's a Bob Hoskins film with him doing a monologue into a bathroom mirror. I remember it being amazing, but I can't remember the name.
Only number 8? Get Carter is by far the BEST British gangster movie!
Yeah I was thinking Gangster No1 should defo be in there. Maybe Hard men? Rock ‘n’ rolla?
Love Honour & Obey is a personal fave, hilarious movie!
Long Good Friday, Bob Hoskins , brilliant and The menacing IRA guys with Pierce Brosnan. In Bruges is excellent as well.
Really?! ''Get Carter'' on no.8?! It is the best British gangster movie, if not so, one of the best gangster movies in movie history!
I think I see a pattern here: american directors debut with horrorfilms, british directors with gangster movies
I'm only here to see where Layer Cake is.
Lock Stock is my fave
Layer Cake one of my favorite movies
Number 10 is awesome i love that movie i own it on DVD still
What about RocknRolla? I'm surprised that no one has mentioned it.
I’m beginning to see a pattern that a lot of directors that we all like debuted with British crime films.
Night and the City with Richard Widmark is worth a watch...
Don't forget Nuns On The Run, and Gangster No.1.
Pretty good list. Two that I personally would put in my top 10, eventhough most people don't seem to like them as much, are revolver from 2005 and rock n' rolla
One to add, Gangster number 1. Crude but memorable film
How can you put Eastern Promises above Sexy Beast?
How can you put ANY Brit gangster film above Sexy Beast?
It's easily a top 5 favourive film of all time for me, let alone British gangster 'movie'.
I was surprised to see no mention of legend honestly....
How is Sexy Beast not number one? I mean I love the films mentioned but...
Sheila goes out with her mate Stella
"It's me Brim gun."
obviously a Bob Hoskins fan ;) ... i like Guy Ritchies movies ... Snatch, Lock Stock ... Gentleman.. all masterpieces ;)
01:56 That's not an "UZI", but, an Ingram Mac-10 or 11.
How is “Shooters” not on here !!! Big John going the baggy and Franny Bennett of his head on beak
Honorable mention Rise Of The Footsoldier
Paul Bettany in Gangster no. 1
Wish it was on the list
What happened to Sci Fri? We miss Simon!!
honorable mention : legend
Gangster No.1 ?
That's not an Uzi, it's a MAC-10.
Why didnt u have the getaway in there, or rockala
No "Love, Honour & Obey"?
I think there needs to be a shuffle.
Snatch > lock stock
In Bruges is wonderful! Has Michael Caine ever given a performance?!!!
There was a fair amount to like and agree with on the list ... that said, it is more 'film school' than 'lover of films' based. I would replace the original 'The Italian Job' with 2008's 'The Bank Job' ... 'Snatch' is more rewatchable than 'Lock Stock ..' ... I watched 'Get Carter' in the 70s and never had any desire to watch it again. I watched the remake of 'Get Carter' then had to rewatch the 70s version which was weak, felt over-long and dated in comparison .. I have since rewatched the remake multiple times and it remains re-watchable (there are subtle elements to it that were not apparent in the initial viewing).
Harold Shand is the 🐐 everything he says is gold❤😊
God...Mona Lisa still breaks my heart. 💔💔💔
hey they missed out villain from 1971 starring richard burton as a eastend gang boss where was it
1:47 it was a pretty one sided punch up
And no one speak of the 30.9k 'Gangster No. 1' It was a fantastic film with legacy actors and big names.
Gotta love that POV murder scene
👍Came her to mention Gangster No. 1 myself.
Gangster No.1 is definitely one of the best gangster movies of all time. Paul Bettany exudes menace in every scene, an unsettling portrayal of someone that will do literally anything to get what they think they deserve. His weird obssession with Freddy Mays adds a whole other layer to proceedings. I agree with above, that POV torture murder is a great scene (Bettany is like a robot!) A truly great British gangster film.
@@davekennedy6315 Pall Bettany is brilliantly cast as the young gangster.
@@davekennedy6315 perfectly said 🤑
