The worst part of Birdhouse graphics is I know they can run good ones but they choose not to. The only alien abduction board that matters is the DGK Kalis board that Alien sent a cease and desist for, when DGK poached him back.
I wish DarkStar had better graphics. And a note about the Walmart boards, they have said in the past that they sell boards at walmart because they know there are dumb parents that buy their kids skateboards at walmart so they figure, if they can sell a passable board for those unfortunate kids, then it's better for skateboarding as a whole. I think DarkStar is the only company that really puts metal parts in their Walmart boards.
And that I can absolutely respect, find a way to get something passable in the hands of a kid that can take it seriously, and then only ask for like 200 bucks to have a badass board? This company understands the importance of skating stating below a certain price threshold
That mason real board is a homage to the James Kelch Flyer real board from 1992 or 93, like that graphic more than the mason board but still gonna go over a lot of peoples heads

Surprisingly, I like to skate graphics that have the 'CattleBranding' because they look better all scratched up (like the OG Chunk decks). When the graphic is too cool or detailed, I just want to hang it on my wall. I guess I'm lame.
I wanna get a OG Chunk. I find it that I dislike a ton of skate graphics because even if it's done well it just doesn't hit for me so most of the decks I like are really simple and are usually based around the logo because the more simple it is the easier it is for it to work compared to doing something really specific which doesn't have as much of a broad appeal. A company that does something more specific aesthetically that I like is like Heroin but that's like the only one I can think of (I'm still new to skating so I don't have defined taste yet cuz I've only had 1 deck so far)
So the hop king board graphics are based on their beer cans. The cbd graphic is based on their cbd infused beer. The hop king boards are pretty much only skated by the locals. I skated a hop king board and they actually skate pretty well but I agree the graphics suck even with the context

I'd buy an interweave rings impact board today if they didn't all have an atrocious rainbow color scheme going on. I miss when each one would have 2-4 colors max and they were just more pleasing to look at (at least to me). Also, I DID care when you mixed up impact and uber light. How dare you ! Also another thing, I appreciate that you were honest about your opinions on Real graphics even though they sent you boards. Keep it up !
Pretty sure I'm the "Jamie skates his shed because it rains all the time" guy. Terrible BritIrish accent, 0/10, IC tier. For real though, it's honestly a shame Hop King's graphics are so bland. Their bar/park is my haven in London and they have some legit savages on their "team" (no idea why Jamie is the only one with a graphic so I don't know if they have a "team" exactly), but they only ever put out variations of a single, overly simplistic graphic at a time when they could easily find some artists to collab with. Their logo is so simplistic that you could do almost anything with it and keep it on brand. Plus, idk, they sort of go for this clean "fresh" thing, but most of their team and staff aren't really like that imo. I wouldn't call them crusty or hesh, but they're closer to that than the sort of clean sportsperson you'd imagine would like that look. That said, their decks are almost half the price of a bigger branded deck here, so it's basically like a shop deck.
i wish jamie and dechuna and even ellis got as much recognition and love as they get hate. their skating isnt exactly my cup of tea but some of their tricks are super interesting and it seems like they're trying to really revitalize and grow the london scene. shame everyone writes them off as kooks because they dont do the same tricks all the us pros do

He can regularly pull off these insane no comply-y things on transition where he hoofs the board way into the air and catches it on the coping. It's taking kook tricks to tech accuracy. I think Joah doesn't realise Hop King(dom) is a bar with a skatepark in it. You literally go in the doors, sign in for a session, get a bear with admission, then skate the miniramp or park. It's something I wish most cities had because it's a great way to have a casual little session before moving into drinks with your homies. But everyone I've met who works there really knows their shit, so it's not some misguided gimmick by people trying to make a few quick bucks.

Hey man, I'm a graphic designer and I'd love to talk to you about some of this stuff. I think you missed a couple of references on some decks, because they're decades old. (Lord of the flips design is a complete spoof of the actual book cover I read when I was 13, I'm sure it's been updated since, but the colors, style and borders are all pulled directly from that cover) We're totally different generations, and if you're not getting it they're totally missing their market demographic and it becomes super obvious that some of these people are strictly not doing market research, or making graphics strictly for themselves and hoping they are going they going to stick. A lot of this new stuff emulates some of the low effort 90s graphics that was more about making a statement or displaying a "punk rock" attitude than the art quality, granted the new stuff doesn't make a statement or convey an attitude. Leaving it just "Low effort". I get it, I'm a graphic designer. I get paid to churn shit out, but ultimately unless the brand asks for literal shit, I don't hand off anything I wouldn't want myself. It's obvious that some of this stuff is "I personally like it" or "Good enough" by who ever's in charge.
as far as anything from deluxe their wood is genuinely so much better than everything else I don't give a shit what's on the bottom as long as it's not yellow or red. I understand a lot of companies use the same wood shop but I don't care there's something very specific about those pro boards with the r1 construction they last forever

one of my boards is an almost double impact. i'm 6'3 240 and have had no issues. i like that it doesn't flex and twist like most boards

Hey man, I'm a graphic designer and I'd love to talk to you about some of this stuff. I think you missed a couple of references on some decks, because they're decades old. (Lord of the flips design is a complete spoof of the actual book cover I read when I was 13, I'm sure it's been updated since, but the colors, style and borders are all pulled directly from that cover) We're totally different generations, and if you're not getting it they're totally missing their market demographic and it becomes super obvious that some of these people are strictly not doing market research, or making graphics strictly for themselves and hoping they are going they going to stick. A lot of this new stuff emulates some of the low effort 90s graphics that was more about making a statement or displaying a "punk rock" attitude than the art quality, granted the new stuff doesn't make a statement or convey an attitude. Leaving it just "Low effort". I get it, I'm a graphic designer. I get paid to churn shit out, but ultimately unless the brand asks for literal shit, I don't hand off anything I wouldn't want myself. It's obvious that some of this stuff is "I personally like it" or "Good enough" by who ever's in charge.

as far as anything from deluxe their wood is genuinely so much better than everything else I don't give a shit what's on the bottom as long as it's not yellow or red. I understand a lot of companies use the same wood shop but I don't care there's something very specific about those pro boards with the r1 construction they last forever

that birdhouse clive dixon board with the gravedigger was a recycled heath kirchart graphic. there was another heath kirchart gravedigger board, same character different graphic, that the image was from the johnny the homicidal maniac comic by jhonen vasquez. he also did invader zim. i always wondered if they had ripped it off, or paid him to use it, or if he worked there or what the story was.
