The Muscle Shoals Studio with its phenomenal house band produced tons of great soul and R&B records. Everyone wanted to record there. I’m thrilled you two are doing music docs. No one else is! ❤❤
This documentary blew me away too! I never realized just how important Muscle Shoals was to the future trajectory of music. R&B, the British Invasion, Southern Rock. Most importantly it was about the music. If you could sing, if you could play you were welcome. A wonderful melting pot of musical talent
This is an incredible documentary. The Wrecking Crew about the session musicians in LA is really good, too.
I agree that both vids you mentioned are fascinating. But what makes me prefer Muscle Shoals is that the Swampers were funkier, even grittier, than the smooth, slick LA group, LA made "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" -- one of the artistic low points of the 60s IMHO. MS/ The Swampers made "When A Man Loves A Woman." Not saying that LA didn't do classics ("Good Vibrations"); but the MS guys are the ones who get my toes tapping.
I completely agree with the Wreckers, its a classic. Also Scorsese's the Last Waltz is an honorable mention.

Another key to The Muscle Shoals Sound was that the rhythm section is pushed forward in the production. Drums, bass was in front of the vocals. A signature.
I've owned this documentary for years and never found the time to watch beyond the first 10 minutes. Thank you for finally breaking the ice for me. It was wonderful. It felt like watching with two good friends, since I've come to know your unique personalities. Thanks again, bros. From the heart.
I watched this on Netflix in '13 when it came out.. after about 45 minutes of trying to find something to watch that I hadn't seen yet, I gave up and watched this, wasn't in the mood to watch a documentary... I didn't plan on staying up that late that night, but it pulled me in so much that I watched it again the next night... a decision I'll never regret... I've watched it handful of times since

Muscle Shoals is in northwest Alabama, right near where Alabama, Mississippi & Tennessee all meet up.
Pretty much... I live plus or minus 15 minutes from Muscle Shoals....
My Mom grew up in the area, she called the local river “The Singing River”. She always said that the river was alive..

Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa is a nice place to stay if you want to visit. Drive over here to Mississippi and check out Dockery Farms and dozens of other historic music sites. The Mississippi Delta region is the Birthplace of American Music.
Y'all won't believe the songs that came out of the Shoals. The Stones cut "Brown Sugar" there. Bob Seger cut many of his studio records with the Swampers, including "Night Moves". Aretha. Wicked Wilson Pickett. Bob Dylan. Paul Simon. Percy Sledge. The Staples singers. Leon Russell. Sooo many hits, with that bunch of white boys backing them.
There is another documentary you should check out and this guy was an engineer in muscle shoals. Tom Dowd and the language of music.
Muscle Shoals and Standing in the Shadows of Motown are my two favorite music documentary. The Swampers, the Funk Brothers and the Wrecking Crew are the greatest bands even

The great grandmother that walked home to hear the river sing and the wife who died so tragically both those stories brought a tear to my eye.
This is one of my favorite music documentaries. It's an incredible story. So much legendary music came out of there. Looking forward to Part 2.

I read that when conditions were right late at night parts of England (like Liverpool) could pick up US AM radio and these kids would lay in bed at night listening and absorbing this soul music.

@airplay_movies You might consider A documentary called Sound City. It's something that was put together by Dave grohl and he bought an old studio board from Sound City and then he tells the story of all the groups that had recorded through that board. I can't remember all the groups but I know Fleetwood Mac and Jackson Brown had recorded there and there's so many more. It's a really good documentary. Peace!

Oooooh!!!! One more doc to add to the list: “Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story” about the Stax/Volt house band from the 60’s. I’ve never seen that one before. Hell, I’ve got to add that one to my own personal viewing list!
I've still got my OG Muscle Shoals T-shirt from when my father recorded there in the 70's. I don't wear it anymore and have thought about maybe framing it. A nice little piece of history.

This is one of the most beautiful, sad, interesting stories ever told. The talent that went thru there was elevated due to the swampers.
Please finish this so many Great artists cut there stuff there. Little story D. Almond left Cali. put up his little tent & camped out there for a couple weeks to just b able to play with these guys. U guys will learn The Rest Of The Story as u go on. Greatness came from there.
You mean Duane Allman … not D Almond. He slept out in the parking lot in a tent and said he would work for free . They gave him a shot and he blew away Rick Hall with his guitar playing. Duane played on a bunch of tracks for many artists and the rest is history
Great documentary! Thanks guys! 😊 I live about 60 miles from Muscle Shoals and saw this doc awhile back. My husband and I went to Fame Studios about a year ago. Inside there are pictures on all wall space of the artists who have recorded there. It seemed like a special place to me, steeped in the history of the music that came from there. I enjoyed going immensely.

So glad you guys checked this out. This film, The Wrecking Crew and Standing in the Shadows of Motown are absolutely essential to anyone wanting to understand popular music in the 1960s in America. Some of the greatest music in the world created by guys that looked like grocery clerks as Aretha said.

Outstanding documentary and reaction! The first 20 years of my studio experience was in old analog recording rooms/equipment.
I got used to Pro Tools and the digital environment, but my heart is buried in the “old days” and the classic recordings.

Hey from the Shoals!! We still have a lot going on in the music world! So glad you reacted to this! I was born and raised here and grew up listening to some of the best music in the world! We are in the very northwest corner of Alabama. I live 4 miles from Fame studio and 2.4 miles from 3614 Jackson Highway.
Some of the Greatest music ever came out of that little town… Fame Recording Studio and Muscle Shoals Recording Studios… Great job guys y’all have a great channel with all these different music reactions 👏

This was the most amazing music documentary that I've ever seen ! First time I watched it I was completely floored by the amount of incredible music history that was ever made and performed that came out of muscle shoals ! Please finish up watching this amazing and jaw dropping video when you too discover all of the music history that was created/made at muscle shoals!

When this came out on DVD and Blu-ray a few years back, I couldn't get it into my home library fast enough, man! I can't wait for you guys to see the rest of this!
The kid falling in the washing water and then the subsequent tragedies- I never forgot that when I first saw this 3 years ago.
There was a deeper soul with Otis and Aretha down there, but that’s not to knock what Berry Gordy was doing in Detroit - incredible.
One of the best Documentaries ever made, PERIOD. Muscle Shoals is not really on the Alabama line, its in the Northwest corner about 40 miles from Miss. and 40 miles from Tennessee. Its three cities clustered together, Florence, Sheffield and Muscle Shoals Al. I think Florence is where North Alabama college is at.
You got to go there. Went last September, first to FAME then over to The Muscle Shoals Sound where the Swamps went when they broke away from FAME. While at FAME my buddy Neil and I got to talk with his second wife who they don’t really talk about in the documentary. She was great. Tried talking my boys (all adults) that they need to see these places. But they don’t get it. I got intrigued because of The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. But then saw all the music of my youth and so many other songs and bands I love. Glad we went. This was our third trip from Nashville, Jack Daniel’s, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Ole Miss. Georgia Tech game, Elvis’ birth home, Corinth, Shiloh, Memphis, to where Patsy Cline died. Football, historical places and music.
Happy to go on this trip with yall!!! It’s a fantastic film! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🙌🏼❤️

You need to check out Standing In the Shadow of Motown about the Funk Brothers, & The Wrecking Crew about the Musicians who played on most of the 60s & early 70s hits. You gentlemen have the Best reaction/ analysis channel out there.

Down the road in 1968 / 1969 Duane, Allman pitched a tent in the front yard of Fame studios and bugged them every day to play. He became one of the Swampers, and there are two double album discographies called …. Duane Allman an Anthology. it will show you the greatness and versatility of Duane in the songs, in the hits that he played on , you want to check them out sometime

Skynyrd came out of Muscle Shoals, Bob Segers first big studio albums came out of Muscle Shoals. Beautiful Loser and Night Moves. Rod Stewart’s first big solo album was a Shoals project. Duane Allman first recording is from there. Great History of music came from their.

I live in the Shoals, pass by “FAME” and “MUSCLE SHOALS SOUND” at least once a week! Awesome place to live, and still a great place for music! I have been watching y’all’s reactions for over a year now, really enjoy them. Was hoping y’all would do this one day. Need to come visit us someday, think y’all would love it here. Ran into a couple from Wisconsin last week coming to visit Fame, Muscle Shoals Sound and Ivy Green.

So glad y’all are doing this I live about 30 minutes from muscle Shoals and they sometimes don’t get enough recognition for the big name artists that recorded at their studios Their studio musicians known as the muscle Shoals rhythm section were the ones who Lynyrd Skynyrd referred to as the swampers in the song sweet home Alabama
Hi guys...... I live in Southern Tennessee not far from Muscle Shoals Alabama. I drive past Rick Halls Fame Studios just about every week. That place has such a musical history. Knowing the story I marvel at it every time I pass through.

The soundtrack is made up of songs & artists recorded at Muscle Shoals, with the Swampers, for a time including Duane Allman on guitar, assisting. This was the R & B I first heard growing up in the ‘60’s, and I loved it. Check out the 2 Duane Allman Anthology albums for his work with Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, King Curtis, Ronnie Hawkins & others. ❤️🎶

I wish I could have been there when you discover this music that was developed in 'Muscle Shoals. I was born in the early 50's and grew up listening to this music in the 60's. A few years ago the first time I saw this documentary blew me away. I too did not know a bunch of white guys were behind this great sound. Check out the documentary about 'STAX' records out of Memphis Tennessee. You may be surprised about the history and some of the musicians. Also, pay close attention how they came up with the name "STAX" records.
I’ve seen this Documentary numerous times over the years, and it never gets old. That recording studio, saw all the big names pass through it at some time. A must watch documentary.
Glad you guys are anxious for more "Mussel Shoals" ASAP. First time seeing this ,on PBS 20-25 yrs. back I was blown away by what I saw + heard
from Fame Studios. To learn the other coast's secret to music success in the '60s just watch the other landmark Documentary "The Wrecking Crew".
It show how a small group of LA session musicians turned out to play on half the hit records in the mid-late
60's. Two really inspiring movies for everyone who loves music. Peace out
I will also Mention "Hitsville: Story of Motown" as the 3rd great American music Documentary about music in the '60s. The 3 together give a great insight into what could have been. The lesson learned, IMHO, is that no major Music Corp. imagined the enormous $$$ that Rock + Roll could generate and in the 60's the Mavericks
like Berry Gordy, Tom T Hall, Lou Adler were all in w their music. Come the '70s suddenly Sony, Columbia, Warner Bros. are all signing groups to mega contracts, but magic of doing it for yourself w limited constraints starts to cave and Corp. Rock is around by the '80s for better + worse.
I've watched this at least 10 times. Any music documentary and I'm in.
