As you can see I'm an incredibly NEW & SMALL channel. Let me introduce myself:
When I was 18 I went to film school. My parents couldn't afford NYU, but that was OK because I spent 4 years in NYC's HUNTER College Film program.
The program not only taught me film history and theory but GAVE ME ACCESS TO CAMERAS.
I had access to 16mm cameras, film, basic lighting equipment, boom mics and the most important tool... other young film lovers.
So I made some short films. I even have two credits on IMDB !!
But life went on and I got a good job, started a family... you know the deal.
I'm a happy father of 3 awesome kids. 5, 2 and 1 years old... so we're BUSY at home...
But I never let my LOVE OF CINEMA go either.

One of my favorite parts of filmmaking was editing. I began this channel as an EXERCISE in editing and nothing more..... but I'm hooked! This is scratching an itch I've had for some time. And it feels good to share it with YOU.

You're not in the minority. I've been hearing this a lot. I'd love to see what he would bring that would differentiate his horror from others.
I think after Oppenheimer whatever film comes next has a lot of pressure on it - and so making this next film choice will be a BIG decision.

@@user-ls2bn5pw5u I think a lot of people expect something akin to The Shinning - but I bet Nolan would be more interested in how camerawork and sound can have a physical effect on the viewer and manipulate that to its absolute singularity.
@@user-ls2bn5pw5u imagine something like Lovecraftian horror, but I wonder how the usual grandeur/epicness his films portray be made to bend in with horror. How can you make something horrifying and grand at the same time, i mean not in the interstellar way but in a truly sinister sense.
People didn't like Dark Knight's ferry-boat scene?? News to me.
There was definitely a lot of talk about it back in '08. I'm an OG On-line Film Forum Geek.
I can speak to my own issues with it though.
While I understand its use and purpose - both within the structure of the PLOT and Jokers PLAN... I find the sequence itself to be a low point in the film.
Two boats FILLED with extras.
I think Nolan learned his lesson, and in TDKR he makes sure ROBIN is with the kids on the bus when they believe the ATOMIC BOMB is going to level the city.
Having the climax of the film cross cutting between BATMAN and THE JOKER in one scene and two boats filled to the tip top with extras...

What's your opinion of the scene?
@@FilmSchoolDad Hmm. I think the extras work in that scene because that was what the Joker was after: for humanity (the general population) to lose faith in Order itself (especially in terms of right/wrong and justice) and try to get them to give in to the chaotic primal urges within all of us.
While Dent and the Batman are his primary foils, his real aim is to try and persuade humanity that everything is pointless. That no amount of structured law and order will ever bring any real justice or fairness, nothing will really. That the only thing anyone can count on is pure chance. In other words, chaos. My favorite line of the Joker is when he's burning the money on the ship, "It's not about the money, it's about sending a message. Everything burns!" And I think if he can convince humanity of that (the extras on the ferries), he will win...at least he will in how he defines the contest. To me, those 'extras' are essential to his message.
Background: I didn't start doing any 'online' forums, or even commenting, until the mid-2010's or so. And I don't use social media. So I'm probably a bit in the dark in terms of what was or wasn't talked about back then. :] All I know is that at the time it came out, I don't recall anyone physically around me mentioning the ferry scene in that light.
@@KonzaCelt Firstly, thanks for your in depth response. I agree with you that this ABSOLUTELY was the point of the scene AND the point of The Joker. I fully understand that and the point is not lost on me.
However, I do think that having a supporting character WITH the ferries may have helped CONNECT viewers - or just me - to the situation better. In The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan makes sure that Robin - yes I'm calling him Robin - is with those kids and preacher on the bus. This makes us care juuuuuuuust a little more.
You're not wrong. You're 100% correct by the way. A million percent. My issue is with the FEEL of the scene. I find that when the extras are on camera they just don't carry the WEIGHT equivalency of Bale and LEDGER - which were crosscutting to and from.
Do you have a LEAST favorite scene in the movie?
By the way - TDK - is a top 10 movie for me and will ALWAYS be on that list. It's absolutely magnificent and IMO no superhero film has come close BEFORE or AFTER.
Should have won the Academy Award that year.

@@joshscott7401 Of course people loved the movie. I don't mean to say people were angry with the Ferry boat scene leaving the theatre, but in '08 on Film Forums, and in reviews by film critics there was talk about the scene being a bit "less than" the rest of the film. And I stand by that - as someone who has seen TDK well over 50 times.
Opinion is opinion. The Dark Knight was written by Nolan, his brother Jonathan and David S. Goyer. So there were more than a few chefs in the kitchen.
Christopher Nolan has even gone on record recently saying that the ferry boat scene was in the first drafts of the movie, and that he didn't like them, but his brother Jonathan fought for the scene as he felt it WAS important to the jokers arc... and he's right. BUT - the scene could have used a few recognizable faces and drama beyond "will they / won't they".
I don't think the "One for them / One for Me" theory can be applied to Nolan after Dark Knight Rises.
For 15 years he's basically had the freedom to do whatever he wants and the only movie which didn't print money was Tenet (and that was only because of COVID). The last four have all been whatever he was interested in making.
BUT the current pattern has genre film/populist films then period piece historic awards contenders (specifically WWII). Now because he's Nolan, even his 3 hour dramas about science and senate hearings connect with everyone and are incredibly popular. But Interstellar and Tenet were part of genres which tend to be more popular sci-fi/action/spy blockbusters.
Based on the pattern I would predict his next film will be a genre film which is a more traditional blockbuster. But with Oppenheimer making a billion...who knows where he'll go next. haha
Sean, firstly I'd like to thank you for your comment. It means a lot you're here saying hi. I like your adjustment to my prediction. Genre -> Populist and back again. It's not entirely different from my assessment - however you may possibly be on the right track... I can see what you're saying.
I'm - of course - still predicting an original, however, I would assume a genre film norm to be his backdrop and the originality to fill in the blanks.

B@@FilmSchoolDad I found Dunkirk curious, in my opinion it is not a pleasant film and much less easy to like. Its soundtrack that plays with our anxiety made me pause the film several times.
@@FilmSchoolDadIt was the only Nolan film that I felt totally anxious about. The film doesn't want to make you comfortable, on the contrary, it wants to play with your anxiety for an hour and 50 minutes. And that's incredible.

I have seen 3 movies of Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight, Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Of these, I liked only The Dark Knight, the other two were boring.
I want Nolan's next film to be a badass, epic WESTERN starring a bunch of leads he's worked with before Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Matthew McConaughey and Cillian Murphy
I could see a fully practical Western in 15/70... EPIC.
Nolan is by far of the most prolific filmmaker of our time and it’s great to see his work and stories that break the norm and thankful he doesn’t just pump out copy/paste nonsense.
I agree and think we're lucky to be living through his tenure. I bet seeing Scorsese emerge in the 70s and just keep pumping out bangers was similar to this in that you knew if Scorsese made it, it was going to be worth watching. And still is.
I think he should do a Howard Hughes film with jim Carrey... That's his most ambitious project
While "THE AVIATOR" is a favorite of mine, and in my opinion quite underrated in Scorsese' resume ( in that you don't hear many people talk about it ) - still, I would LOVE a Nolan / Hughes / Carey ( return to drama! ) film.
That would be quite something.
We DID see shades of this in his interpretation of a secluded Bruce Wayne, however I'd rather see the man in his prime - but again... I'm bias to "The Aviator" so a new shade of Hughes would be more appropriate.

@@seancollins7447 thanks! That actually does sound right up my alley. I'm partial to OLD episodes of The Twilight Zone and that reminds me of one of my favorites: Time Enough at Last. I'll put it on my list to watch.
Without a doubt Christopher Nolan is the best filmmaker of all time. All his films are at least a 9, with Oppenheimer being an 11. If I could choose, I'dwant him to do a high fantasy film because imagine what world Nolan could create when it's not our own.
I'm infinitely intrigued to find out what that would look like. I think the most interesting thought is what his SETS would look like - and of course - the action.
Practical high fantasy already has its HERO, though. Peter Jackson.
Jackson proved with The original Lord of the Rings trilogy how PERFECT practical effects blend with fantasy. I wonder. It's definitely not his "thing" but it sure would be fascinating to see.

Not to say I wouldn't be over the moon to see something EVEN BETTER. I'm ready for it.
Chris Nolan's creative powers comes from an unpredictable space meaning it has to shock or surprise everyone when the movie gets released or announced. He will not make a horror film because there is horror elements in Oppenheimer already, and that is too predictable. He will not make a western because he is not Quentin Tarantino and he knows that. You can never exactly guess and that is why I love Nolan as a director so much. Either way, whatever he makes, I will be fully invested in it because I have that much faith in him as a Director.
I happen to agree with much here, although I don't think Tarantino's essence would stop him from a big modern western actioneer... I still don't think he's making one next. Nor a horror.
And like you, I'll be there either way as the ONE thing I enjoy more than endlessly rewatching a Christopher Nolan movie is watching it for the FIRST time.

Count me in for whatever that guy cooks! Interstellar is hands down my favorite movie ever. I think of myself as agnostic, but Interstellar (and Robert Zemeckis's Contact too) made me feel something bigger, almost divine. I just adore the whole vibe of it.
Interstellar holds a special place on my list of best movies too! The more time passes... the closer the film gets to my own personal singularity - forever crossing its event horizon...
What makes interstellar so special to you?
For me it's grown with me. I first saw it as a man who LOVED sci-fi, wondering what my favorite director could bring to the genre.
Today I watch the film as a father of three and the story of Coop saving the world FOR his family but being REQUIRED to LEAVE THEM in order to do so. It breaks my heart every time I watch.
@@FilmSchoolDad I've seen Interstellar twice in theaters and countless times at home, often with my son who also considers it his favorite movie. The soundtrack? Love it! I listen to it all the time. HZ is a beast!
For me, the film is about love, resilience, finding your purpose, and that yearning for the grand adventures we all dream of. But beyond all that, it connects me with something truly profound, something I can't quite put into words. Maybe it's about God, maybe it's about ourselves-it's just something truly grand.
@@lms7433 Well said. I do believe Nolan attempted something grand scale in terms, not only in physical scale ( space / time ) but also the metaphysical scale as well. In the way 2001: a space odyssey opened the minds of my parents INTERSTELLAR acts as this catalyst for our generation.

Christopher Nolan needs to take constructive criticism. His sound mixing makes it Miserable to listen to and understand dialog.
I think art is subjective and for whatever reason Nolan feels strongly about mixing his audio, both diegetic and non - in a very particular way. The attempt is to recreate what it would sound like in reality. Of course - films are not taking place in reality - they are merely representations.
So should he take constructive criticism?
The truth is: I'm not interested in someone's censored art. I want the directors cut all day. In whatever form that comes.
Well they are projections of reality, you don't interpret or entertain, you experience. Experience is not subjective. It's without bias. It's trying to understand film on the observer level.

I agree. I think this may be the first time he's had any LEGITIMATE pressure since after THE DARK KNIGHT.
Now - he absolutely came though after TDK with INCEPTION - arguably his most popular film... depending on who you ask -
After INCEPTION it seemed as if he could do no wrong - and we TDKR... which others argue may be a low point for Nolan.
I go back and forth. I may do a video on TDKR at some point just so I can force myself to have a definitive opinion.

Interestingly enough "The Prestige" was based on a novel written in 1995 by Christopher Priest. And "Oppenheimer" is based on "American Prometheus" by Kai Bird & Martin J. Sherwin. None of his Original 5 were based on books but Memento was based on a short story written by his brother Jonathan Nolan- Westworld Creator... but that one's sort of a cheat code...

Idk where I have this from but I think I saw someone talking about a comedy of sorts as his next. I have no idea whether Nolan would be able to make a funny story himself, but if helped by funny people on the writing part, it could be interesting to see what he’d do with a comedy.
While I'm not personally invested in a Nolan Comedy - some of THE GREATS have made solid comedies including Stanley Kubrick and "Dr. Strangelove" so I'd say anything is possible and on the table. I might not put money on it but I bet - if Nolan had an "in" he'd make a great comedy.

Nolan did express doing a Horror film but also heard he’s admitted about redoing The Prisoner. I’d like to see a Bond film by Nolan and work with Hans Zimmer again.

You're absolutely right. Thank you. I did know that and have to admit it's an error on my part.
I will say - in my defense 😎 that Nolan used his then famous non-linear narrative technique he had previously used in Memento, and Batman Begins to its fullest with The Prestige. The way the story unfolds makes it feel as if Nolan is there with you watching, navigating for you. He somehow - in my mind - surpasses the original material and is able to make it something more - and at a minimum... Like Kubrick with The Shinning -
I don't think about Steven King when I watch The Shinning. I think Kubrick. And King HAAAAAAATES The Shinning for just that reason. He'll say in interviews one thing. But truly, King hates The Shinning because Stanley Kubrick re-wrote the story and made his own original tale.

I’m currently working on a book which is about the founding father (and dictator) of a fictional European country and I think Nolan is the only person who might be able to adapt it. I really hopes he stumbles upon it (whenever it gets published)

As for a MACROSS live action film, I wasn't aware of the reference so I did a quick google and if it's what I think it is... that would be pretty awesome.

@FilmSchoolDad yeah it's a space romance anime. The OG anime is a classic imo and Nolan never touches something so high tech in his filmography, so yeah it might be a good change for him.
@@goty-vb5uv Well to be honest I think I would be up for anything that was NEW for him. I think a change in genre would be most welcomed.
I don't really think Oppenheimer was one for us. There's a scene referencing Oppenheimer and the Manhattan project in Tenet. After the movie wrapped, Robert Pattinson gave Nolan a book containing speeches Oppenheimer delivered in the 50's, and then a producer recommended to him that he should read the American Prometheus book. And that's how he was convinced to make Oppenheimer.
Also, he left Warner after the whole HBO Max/Theater simultaneous release fight they had. Universal came in giving him total creative control, huge budgets and a huge theatrical release window. This was definitely about him.
His next movie, though? Rumours flying around are that this next one will be based on The Prisoner, an old british tv show from the 60's.
Lovingly... you said it yourself in your first paragraph. "And that's how he was convinced to make Oppenheimer". Convincing is different than creating. With Inception and TENET he created wholy original works. That is what I consider "one for him".
And as for "The Prisoner" he hasn't worked on that script since 2009. I don't think we're getting a remake of an old TV show after he just won an OSCAR. He has full creative license.
Whatever it is. It's gonna be glorious.
If you actually look at his movie page on IMBD his next film he is doing is a remake of his 2000 movie Memento.

I really want a really good Tenet remake, or a really good Tenet sequel
Time inversion is such an awesome idea, but it wasnt as explored in Tenet as dreams were in Inception
Also, the climax was lackluster compared to Inception
Tenet is my least favourite Nolan film, but has my favourite concept from a Nolan film
Also, the inconsistencies in Tenet triggers me for some reason
Id rather watch Dunkirk than Tenet, Dunkirk was much better
Tenet left me immensely disappointed, no other film has
I f-ing hate Tenet, time inversion was such a cool concept but the script wasn't good
You mentioned Inception had a huge exposition problem, but I can rewatch Inception and have fun. Tenet's exposition is worse, with the Protagonist constantly moving from one person to another, and some semi-cool action

He'd make an amazing one, however I stand by I believe it's going to be an original work after this last adaptation.
My deepest cinematic fantasy is for Mr. Nolan to take the helm of a live-action Star Blazers.
Quite possibly the best anime ever; directed by the best director in a long time.
If that is what he is going to do, I would be happy to offer my insights as a script consultant.
I did a quick google search as I, myself, am not familiar with the project and it seems like Disney bought the rights in the mid 90s and even began working on a script, however the project never came to fruition and still lays in waiting to this very day.
What would you say is the most interesting part of Star Blazers?
@@FilmSchoolDad it’s a Joseph Campbell hero quest in which a WW2 Japanese battleship gets retrofitted for interstellar combat. A combination of Saving Private Ryan, Les Miserables, *MASH* Star Trek and Star Wars.
The Disney script was atrocious and I’m glad it never saw the light of day.
But in the right hands it could be spectacular
@@moneybagzz sometimes - like with DUNE and Denis Villeneuve - a project just needs the right creative behind the scenes the steer the ship. You never know! Star Blazers sounds like it could be a good series as well.
I'd like to see the remake of Logan's run❤.
I'm sure he would do a masterpiece , a typical Nolan's movie, recognizable among millions of movies!

I think the most interesting thing about if Nolan DID do a remake would be how he would tackle it and make it his own. There's so much possibility just with story structure alone - practical effects, music and scope would just add to the effect.

You got it wrong with Batman begins, he and his brother actually brought the script to WB and ask to make the movie.
TDKR was asked from WB though.
@@trevor133 there are mildly differing reports but I have a clip of Emma Thomas stating they came to her - then after thinking about it Chris and Jonathan made and brought them a treatment.

I think all the movies he did coz he was deeply passionate about those projects. No sane person would commit for years in making something just to entice the audience. Maybe its a happenstance that his movies turned out to be in that order.
I mean - I could name numerous Hollywood directors that work for hire. Nolan specifically did Insomnia "as a job" and "Batman Begins also he was passionate about - but these were means to end for him. His entrance fee into mainstream Hollywood. Many directors "work" for someone as it IS a job....
Still I get your thought. He's making movies he wants to. And I should state "I'm probably the biggest Nolan Fan here...." but there's an obvious difference between Inception and Dunkirk. One was for him... and was for for "us". I stand by my theory. But I don't disagree with you either!

....I'll guess what it won't be. It won't be another true story. He just did DUNKIRK, TENET, OPPENEHEIMER - so that's TWO "true event" films.... I really do think it's going to be some absolutely bonkers original idea.
It would be fun to see horror, but I don't think he'll go that route.
I do believe it may be another Spy-Triller-Esq mind bending adventure. But I couldn't muster what the mind would be bending this time...
I don't see him doing Sci-fi fantasy. His science fiction would be Hard science like INTERSTELLAR.

The prestige wasn't his original idea, it was an adaptation of a novel with the same name. Read the credits properly.
"The Prestige" Novel written by Christopher Priest is wildly different in the structure and plot which - in the book - focus on the children of BATMAN & WLOVERINE ( Borden and Angier ) who are reading the diaries of their parents.
NOLAN took the ideas and characters and completely re-wrote the story, structure, plot and ending.
In a way it's as original as Oppenheimer - which is based on "American Prometheus" but is completely re-tooled to the "Nolan-esq" nature of HIS films as I had mentioned.

Great analysis and video👍.There was buzz of three different projects right after Oppenheimer took the Oscars home. An adaptation of The Prisoner series into a feature film; a Bond take over from Nolan with Taylor-Johnson supposedly as 007, and an adaptation of Jorge Luis Borges short story The Inmortal (Nolan is a Borges super fan). I dont know which is gonna be, or maybe something different who knows. But the announcement is overdue considering his usual habit, right?
Thank you so much. I haven't heard about the Borges remake but I will gamble and put money on The Prisoner and Bond NOT happening. After Oppenheimer Nolan can do anything he wants and I'm betting on something original.

I’ve heard he wants to do a tv show of the 60s British show “The Prisoner.”
Back in '09 he worked on a script and he couldn't crack it. After the series was rebooted the same year ( 2009 ) with Jim Caviezel he put script away. Probably for good.

To be honest I find Dunkirk boring - And I'm not alone. A huge Nolan fan I WANT TO LOVE DUNKIRK but I'm not there yet.

"The Shinning" is an all time favorite of mine. While I think Kubrick and Nolan have technical and thematic similarities I would hope Nolan brings a new sensibility to Horror, IF he were to tackle the genre.
He's mentioned that he dabbled in some horror tropes when designing the FEEL of Oppenheimers panic attacks in both the Los Alamos auditorium scene and the interrogation during the latter 3rd of the film.
I found these efforts quite effective.

Yoo, great vid! I have a sneaky feeling it’ll be the next Bond film. Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Bond. Tom Hardy the villain? 😮 I mean we’ve all been guessing it. It makes sense considering you can’t go wrong with Nolan, like yourself, a massive fan of Nolan, I imagine even if this next Bond is mediocre, to us it’ll be incredible!
I consider myself tough on Nolan to be honest. I think... I personally would be let down with a Nolan directed Bond Film. To me, Nolan's bond Films are INCEPTION and TENET. I think he made a statement about the Spy-Thriller Genre with those films... and in fact - even his take on BATMAN leans heavily on Bond inspired gadgets. Mr. Fox is our stand in for Q.
I love the last set of Daniel Craig bond films. Skyfall in particular takes inspiration from The Dark Knight's level of heightened reality style BIG action. It's interesting how Nolan steals from BOND and then Double O goes right back and steals from Nolan.
Anywho... long winded way of saying I hope the next Bond feels fresh and the next Nolan film does as well.

I want Nolan to go back to his roots with movies like memento and following...idk why i feel this way but Nolan is at his best when he creates a world from the main protagonist's perspective, the characters are trying to escape lies and unraveling mysteries about themselves, very noir-esque....
This sounds like Tenet AND Oppenheimer if you think about it. They both are completely from the main characters POV. Tenet is less about the protagonists demons though and instead about his Journey. I did the old stuff too!!!! "The Prestige" is an all time great.

So it's my summation that a film like Dunkirk and Oppenheimer - while obviously Nolan loves those films and wanted to make those film - are more heavily aimed at Oscar nomination fodder and are "higher-brow" than TENET which is quite obviously a passion project based solely on his own personal desire.

Wasn't it Nolan who took Batman to WB and not the other way round?
So it's an interesting story. Originally "Batman Begins" was being developed by Warner Bros unnder the working title: "Batman: Year One" based on the DC Comic about a young Bruce, having only recently taken on the cowl. This version was being developed, written and directed by Darren Arronofsky - another favorite artist of mine - however the film was TOO "different" for WB at the time. The Batmobile was a muscle car... Bruce was a temperamental twenty something and the whole vibe was different.... sounds VERY MUCH to me like what we ended up with in - THE BATMAN.
Anyway - long story long - WB canned the Arronofsky version and began looking for new directors with their own vision. WB approached Nolan's wife Emma Thomas and she brought it to him - thinking he'd never want to do something in that genre - but instead Nolan was excited at the prospect. And thus... Batman Begins.

@@siddharthmani9588 I remember being VERY excited to see Arronofsky's version. I think it would have been incredible divisive - more so than Nolan ever could be. Noah and Mother stand out to me as favorites, but also ones that I recognize many people despise and or don't understand.

Some old rumors suggested this but it doesn't appear to be officially linked to Nolan anymore. He's been quoted saying that since they did a TV remake 10 or so years ago he probably doesn't have anything to add.

@@kokomanation The Prisoner is an amazing. Show. I watched it years back with MY pops and it kills. So good. Nolan was actively working on a screenplay but it's been out of development for around 5 years

I read a few months back his team was interested in purchasing the rights to "Halo" after the series failed at Paramount+.
Word is he's a fan of the game. This could be a good bet for his production company although I'm not as sure about it with him directing. Possibly just producing like "Man of Steel".

No nothing official. There was some speculation about The Prisoner last year but it wasn't anything concrete. Nolan has - years ago - spoke about possibly doing a remake - but it never came about and this was around the Interstellar days, I believe.

Horror is the only genre he has not touched... Comedy would not suite his style imo. Maybe something political or even historical might be new but i don't think Nolan would strive for that. Eaither a James Bond or a psychological horror (or just psychological thriller)
I'm with you on the psychological anything. I know he could pull that off. My big question mark is what his "in" will be. For Oppy, it was the trinity test and the idea of being in the room when inventing The Bomb For Tenet it was inversion, Inception the laying of dreams. What will his next "in" or MacGuffin be?

It may be my least favorite - BUT TENET and OPPENHEIMER to me stand as Nolan's most restrained and most UNrestrained - and as a fan of film in general THAT is exciting viewing to me.

@@adelinrapcore While I do think it would be interesting see something akin to how Denis Villeneuve made Blade Runner 2049 within the Ridley Scott universe as well, for me, that was special as Blade Runner has had no other sequels. Alien has had its fair share of directors coming on and putting their spin on things - as proved by Fede Alvarez's current film Alien: Romulus.
However... I do think Nolan's take on anything extraterrestrial WOULD be infinitely interesting.
