    The mint spreads underneath the soil and will take over the bed.

  • @carolion23
    @carolion23 Před 4 dny +37

    The mint roots will spread everywhere, and it will completely take over within a few years, even if you dig it up, you will need to replace all the boarder soil to remove every trace of roots or it will just keep coming back. I keep mint in tubs not the actual ground.

      Couldn’t agree more - harvesting has nothing to do with it, the roots will just get everywhere ! The roots will find their way under the wooden sleepers and will even come up in the lawn.

    Apart from mint be aware of the lemon balm. It’s a monster and will take over……Herbs are not easy to grow successfully. They require different growing conditions. Suggest Jekka’s Complete Herb Book which is a classic…good luck!

    Hello Freya !! Good Morning and happy Sunday
    I'm of everyone option, mint is def something, in my previous garden one mint destroyed the plastic pot where my Camelia was in (and I saw it only when I wanted to moved the pot so you can't never see how growth they are until you dig the soil), they are vicious plants 🤣
    For weeds that grow, unfortunately the only technique would have been to sift the soil before integrating it into the bins and remove the soil around the roots of the plants before planting, but else in the end you'll always have weeds in a garden, my mum fight with them every year 😆
    P.S: hoping my english isn't too bad (I'm french) 🙃

      Yes, that's exactly what I've had to do with my pots. Blackbirds and squirrels will dig out the soil/plants very easily and they seem to love freshly planted pots best. If you use the same gravel as you're having laid, it will all match. It also stops soil splashing up onto the plants when you water so put a good layer on. I tried bark chips but they are just too light and can be turfed out. Ps. Alarm bells started ringing when I saw the lemon balm. Hope you really like it because it will get everywhere!

    I wont mention the mint as many already have, you might find not all the herbs thrive in that bed as softer herbs like coriander, basil and parsley don't need the same soil and weather conditions as woody herbs like rosemary and fennel but it's part of the fun of gardening. You could sink the mint into a large container in the bed if you don't want it planted separately. The mulch on your flower bed will also help retain moisture. Happy gardening!

    Change to "mintgate" ...
    Freya, have you thought about a Blaster dryer for Barney after he has been in water? They basically blast cool or warm air from the unit down a flexible pipe which blows water off the dog's coat. We used several on our Newfoundlands over the years. Not a hairdryer which is not good for the coat but way better than towel drying. Would even blow soil or leaves off the terrace. Dog groomers use them.

Your lawn is looking lush - I don't blame Barney having a roll around on it. Can't wait to see the garden once the gravel is down and all the pots are positioned.

    I won’t go on about the mint! I would do a chart of the herbs layout, and change it time goes by and herbs replaced. That way, if the label markers fade, the blackbirds move them when scratching around, or they are blown away - you will know what is planted where. For the green steps, sweep the area, and then spray with Wet and Forget. It works with the rain water to remove algae, and it’s effect lasts about a year before needing to repeat. I use it all the time on my York stone paving slabs. Good for fencing also, usually see the effect overnight. Keep away from plants, and animals until dried. Hope your heat rash improves. Keep your energy levels up!

    Personally I find I get prickly heat just being outside (with a high factor suncream on). My skin is super sensitive and I get excema too. I take an antihistamine tablet to keep things at bay (plus a nasal spray and eye drops) for the hayfever. It's lovely to have nice weather but I struggle. Your garden is looking lovely. 🤗🤗🤗

    The roots of the mint will work their way out of the pot along the bed in no time. It will take over and is very hard to get rid of.
    Apple mint is the nicest,in a pot though x

    Hi Freya love your home followed you for few years now and it all keeps getting better! Love love Barney what gorgeous boy 🐾🐾💙 please can I tell you this! Your garden looks fab but was very concerned for you where your garden mirror was only last week my friend had the same mirror/garden furniture set up (as in how it’s placed) and she was washing up to notice her whole garden sofa was on fire 🔥 the sun had hit the Mirror 🪞 which to be fair was some distance from it at least 6-8ft but it scorched the sofa and then caught fire 🔥 thank goodness her hubby pulled the hose from the reel and out the flames 🔥 out! My friend after looked on line to see if this has happened to anyone else and apparently it does so just letting you know for you to maybe check it out……my friend said she had never heard of this before! Mirror now been moved to shaded area away from all new replaced furniture.

    It might be worth reconsidering gravel below the bin area as it might be difficult to wheel them when full. I did that and quickly regretted it.

    Hi Freya absolutely love your videos, just wanted to raise awareness for weed killer use;
    Health risks
    Many weed killers contain dangerous chemicals
    Environmental impact
    Toxic to fish and birds and can kill beneficial insects and soil organisms that maintain ecological balance.
    Damage to plants
    Hormonal weedkillers can damage broad-leaved plants, causing symptoms such as narrowed leaves, twisted leaf stalks, and swollen stems.
    Overspray
    Some weed killers, such as vinegar weed killer, can irritate the skin, eyes, and beneficial insects in your garden if overspray occurs
    Most de weeding is only able to be done by hand or other natural ways to prevent weeds as much as possible like bark chippings

    Hi freya that weed on the lawn and in flower bed is bindweed, the only way of removing it is to dig it up, weed killer will only kill a top layer, but be careful with weed killer as it's harmful to all wildlife and pets.

    Fellow emetaphobic here! The phobia almost stopped me becoming a primary school teacher. We had a fun trip to a farm last week which involved coach travel and with it the possibility of travel sick children. Thankfully all was fine and no ..can't say the words that starts with v or s. Totally feel your anxiety. It's a more common phobia that people imagine. What happens if Barney is ill? xx
