The Top 20 Triple Axels of All Time in Womens Figure Skating

  • This is a data-driven ranking of the best triple axels in the history of womens figure skating, current as of the end of the 22/23 season. Since this is an all-time ranking, it will inevitably change based on future results. As such, the plan is to release updates to this video every few seasons.
The basis for this ranking is PoM (“Percentage of Max”), a metric calculated by dividing the number of points a skater received for a jump by the maximum number of points they could have received, taking into account the scale of values that was in effect at the time of the jump.
One advantage of PoM is that it factors in not only GOE, but also the base value impact of any calls that a jump received. PoM also makes it easier to compare jumps across different seasons and scale of values.
    Some further explanation of PoM...
    • At present, the maximum score for a 3A, ignoring bonuses, is 12.00. So, as a hypothetical example, a 3A right now with a score of 9.00 would have a PoM of 9.00 / 12.00 = 75.0%.
    • When calculating PoM for a 3A jumped as part of a combination or sequence, the base value impact of the non-3A part of the jump pass is excluded from both the numerator and denominator. (It wouldn’t be excluded if you were calculating PoM for the entire jump pass, however.) For example, for a 3A+2T, the 1.30 point impact of the 2T would be excluded. Also, it is a rare occurrence, but if a jump pass’s GOE was based on the non-3A part of the jump pass, it would be recalculated to be based on the 3A.
    • Second-half bonuses are factored into the calculation of PoM. However, other bonuses, such as those sometimes seen in certain novice and domestic competitions, are generally excluded. Jump sequence adjustments, which were relevant prior to the 22/23 season; repetition penalties; and fall deductions are also excluded from the calculation of PoM. (Jump sequence adjustments would be factored in if you were calculating PoM for an entire jump pass, however.)
The analysis underlying this ranking takes into account all competitions covered by SkatingScores, the invaluable and fairly comprehensive database of international and domestic competition results. However, SkatingScores is missing some significant Russian domestic events, especially at the novice level. In light of the high number of ultra-cs performed in Russian domestic events from the late 2010s onward, the following events have also been included in this analysis...
All-Russian Competitions taking place in Moscow and St. Petersburg
    Russian Novice Nationals
    Moscow Novice Championships
    St. Petersburg Championships
Winter Spartakiad, Prizes of Santa Claus
Moscow Open Championships, City Championships, Cup, Sports Cup
It is estimated that this analysis, in total, has taken into account over 95% of the ultra-cs that have been attempted in competition since the start of the IJS era, with those attempts missing mainly being from minor domestic events in Russia, in particular minor events outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as some minor domestic events in Japan and the United States.
Lastly, it should be noted that in the case of any skater who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, their results are invalidated for purposes of this analysis starting from the season they tested positive, and ending at the point that they were cleared to compete again by the relevant international bodies.

Midori Ito still has the best triple axel of all time in my opinion, even if the judging doesn't reflect that. She doesn't rely on quick rotations but instead absolutely incredible height and distance.

Midori was pre-IJS, so it wasn't possible to rank her, since this is a data-driven ranking. But I certainly wanted to at least include her as an "Honorable Mention." We can only speculate what her scores would have been had she competed in the IJS era, but if you told me her jumps would top this ranking, I wouldn't be shocked. Absolute legend.

Definitely, the speed going into the jump helps give her the height and distance. Same with Tonya. But Tonya did not have light landings outside of the 91 Nationals and 91 Worlds. Midori had great landings. The only 3A I've been impressed by in the IJS era were Kostornaia's. Most of the others don't get the height, distance, and hang time in the air; and some pre-rotate.

@@fs.delight I read "HM" as "Her Majesty" lol What I will say no one got the same height as her, she was revolutionary and a pioneer. My only thing with her was the wrapped leg when jumping, it marred her jumps a tiny bit (tiny).

For 3A, Alena Kostornaia is the best for me.

Midori and Tonya's 3A's are FREAKING HUGE. Amazing.

Watch midori's and then Alena's #1. Well, it's clear which is the more impressive jump. Alena's 3A was gorgeous yes, but Midori was truly on another level

How? Midori takes what feels like an eternity to get into the jump, while Alena's transitions are seamless. Alena also has a lot more control and her jumps are overall a lot more pleasing to watch.

Аксель Косторной и Мидори это просто волшебство. Такая высота, такая пролетность. Гениально!

FS feels like a sport with the open ended scoring than the old one which felt like a popularity contest than an actual sport. Skaters are finally given the a credit where it's due. It's a damn shame Midori and Tonya didn't get the marks they rightfully deserved by landing the 3A.

Totally agree. I wish Midori and Tony had gotten the chance to compete in this era, or at least under these rules.

Surprised there wasn't an honorable mention for Tonya's 3A at the 91 Worlds. Lots of speed going into the jump, and a much more controlled landing than at 91 SA.
