  • By request from one of my viewers, I have given a brief overview of the qualitative differences between the Rolex Submariner and the Tudor Black Bay GMT. Which is better? Well it's not that simple.

Thanks for the excellent presentation. I am a professional, in my 60’s, and own many Rolexes, including a couple of different Rolex GMT’s. In the last decade, I have been more interested in Tudors, and bought a Tudor GMT. I feel it’s more useful GMT, since it has twice the depth rating and attainable. I know I’m not alone.

    • @lewisjones3345
      @lewisjones3345 Před 2 lety +1

The fact that the Tudor GMT is attainable makes it much more useful because you can buy it, wear it, and use the bloody thing.

You’re 100% not alone. I love my Tudor, the fact that I walked into the AD, with no history, and walked out with a phenomenal watch that same very day is all you need to know. Plus, I am also a professional in my 40s and I’m fortunate enough to make a decent living however that living doesn’t afford me the ability to play 6 or 7 times the cost of the Tudor black bay gmt for a Master II.

Everything about the Tudor is appealing to me. I have the BB all stainless w date complication. Tudor in house mechanism is great. I also prefer, the shape of the case, profile of crystal and bezel, matte dial, the snowflake hands, coin edge of bezel, and font on the bezel.

Like many others I tried to join the queue for a Submariner , despite buying an Oyster Perpetual months ago, it couldn’t even make the list. I was gifted the Tudor GMT as a wedding anniversary present , and I have to say I absolutely love it . It fits perfectly and is very comfortable ( of course that’s personal dimensions) but I’m really enjoying it . I’d encourage anyone to go and physically try one on , at far less than half the price, and the fact you can actually walk out with one, it’s worth a try

Both are great watches but in my opinion I prefer the Tudor and the same thing happens to me if I had to choose between a Tudor GMT or a Rolex GMT. Don't get me wrong, Rolex it's a better watch, an icon, but starting from the basis that the Tudor already has very good quality (more than enough to me) i like it more because it barely shines like the Rolex GMT or the submariner. I own both the Tudor GMT and the Rolex Sub (no date) and I think both are great watches, but somehow I like the Tudor more than the Rolex. The Rolex is almost perfect, but that makes it feel a little sterile and almost boring at times. The Tudor isn't perfect, but that gives it a bit more character and the colours on the GMT are really amazing.

I happen to have both of these watches. I have the new Sub date (the 2020 refresh 126610) and the Tudor BBGMT from 2018. I have been wearing the Tudor quite a bit the last 3 years and I just adore the watch. I like the weight and thickness, but the Sub is just on a different level. It wears so well that you can almost forget its on your wrist. The sub is just so clean and legible that there just isn’t comparison. The Sub is the best sports watch in the business. The GMT is a nice change up and still gets serious wrist time. The loser of my watch box was my Omega Seamaster 300mc.

Both watches are excellent. For purely realistic reasons I would go for the Tudor. At least they are somewhat obtainable. Rolex is like that super-hot girl that you've tried to get a date with and despite your best efforts, no luck. She might be worth it, she might not, but you'll never know. I was on a 4-year chase to obtain a No Date Sub, but came up empty-handed. I gave up the hunt in late 2019 because was unwilling to pay the Gray Market price. Purchased something else instead and am extremely satisfied.
Congrats to you Andy, for scoring a Rolex Sub. You've got the best of both worlds.

Well done. Just keep in mind that the steel used in the Rolex Oyster case is 2x as expensive as the 316L (904L). It works the same way with pocket knives. Better steel is more expensive to make, and harder to polish. We all overlook this fact when comparing these two brands.

  • @JustAboutTime

I bought two Tudors recently .. the BlackBay 41mm Heritage ..and the GMT. And even though they are not the most expensive watches in my collection (that honor goes to my two Bremonts) .. they are easily the best watches I own. And though I’d love a Rolex GMT Master II .. I’m frustrated with Rolex and their inability or unwillingness to produce more quantity. A 20 year waitlist where I live for any Rolex .. that’s straight from the Showroom. So .. Tudor is a winner for that simple fact that their products are affordable, and available. (And even more frustratingly .. it’s made in the same factory as the Rolex’s .. seems that no one can be arsed putting Rolex’s together at the factory).
As for which is better … again .. a redundant question as Rolex is unavailable.
I want one .. but I ain’t ever getting one. BUT .. I’m mollified by the fact that my Tudor watches are amazing and I can’t imagine a Rolex being any better.

Sub owner here. Cheers on the video. So 904l steel is substantially more expensive to work with. Rolex invested millions when they changed from 1016 over to 904l steel. All of the machinery had to be changed at well. Although it does scratch a little easier it is a more robust steel and harder to work. I do enjoy a good Tudor but I prefer the vintage references. Their gilt dial submariners are just as interesting as an old 6538 or 5512

If you like the looks of the Tudor over the Rolex, and one is one third the price with equal precision and quality than the other....the answer is obvious. In Rolex you are paying the advertising, the sponsorship and yes..the fame. But..honestly...do you think Tudor factory is going to compromise on purpose their manufacturing processes and quality just to be less expensive than Rolex? NO! They are built exactly by the same qualified watchmen, the same machines, with the same quality and the same control standards...difference in price is just explained by marketing expenses, ridiculous hype, desire and scarcity. Twenty years from now, the Tudor GMT will be a collector’s piece just by the fact that it somehow managed to "dent the famous crown".

I think the first thing to consider, Hans Wilsdorf wasn't a watchmaker. In fact he never made a watch in his life, he was just a businessman. A good businessman, certainly. Rolex at the beginning was a bit of a Disparate affair, for example the movements. They were supplied by a little known movement manufacturer, Aegler. This continued until 2004, when Rolex finally bought them out completely. Wilsdorf recognised a potential opportunity to mop up customers that found the prohibitively expensive ticket price of the Rolex marque hard to swallow. And that's where The Tudor story starts and ends really. It was developed as a budget alternative to a Rolex, and it still is. A bit like Porsche, I don't think anyone would buy a Cayman if they could afford a 911. Similarly, I don't think anyone would opt for a Tudor in preference to a Rolex. Sorry!

In my opinion Rolex has become ubiquitous and a bit pretentious. Additionally, I just can’t stand the cyclops date window. Its so big it obscures the hands anytime they’re pointing in that direction. Rolex is impeccably made no doubt but I can’t get past these issues. Tudor on the other hand is a bit more unique and actually fills the role of a tool watch. The Sub/Master II are tools that 90% of owners would never use as such. I’ll be picking up a Black Bay GMT soon.

Sub wears better. Tudor GMT is nice, but wears too big for my 7” wrist. Both are great.

If you do not mind wearing very thick watch then the Tudor is a great value at around $4.5K.
It is 14.6mm thick. This is why I did not buy it as it felt too thick on my average wrist.
The Rolex is just 12mm thick so it feels a little more comfortable on my wrist.
My strong advice is to visit your AD and try the watch that you are interested in and then decide.
