CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE is a radio drama series created and directed by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982. Later in the early 2000s the show was repeated by the NPR satellite feed.
The format was similar to that of classic old time radio shows like The Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler, in that the episodes were introduced by host E. G. Marshall who provided pithy wisdom and commentary throughout. Unlike the hosts of those earlier programs, Marshall is fully mortal, merely someone whose heightened insight and erudition plunge the listener into the world of the macabre.
CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE was broadcast each weeknight, at first with a new program each night. Later in the run, three or four episodes were new originals each week, and the remainder repeats. There were 1,399 original episodes.

At my grandfathers farm where I grew up working and going to school all he had was a radio and by the way I own it. 1923 I think is the date on it and runs off a car battery lol. He would put on bbc or cbc radio at night for shows like these and would sit there with hot chocolate and be in awe of what we could hear and see. Best time ever.
I used to listen to this back in my Highschool Days. Came in at 10:00 P.M. Sent me to my dreams.
"Whoa": I'm Seventy-Five, I Listened To Mystery Theatre When I Was In My Twenties. My Father Listened To CBS At Home, In The Car; We Watched CBS, NBC, ABC, KTLA, When Television Started; Great Memories!!!
I listened to CBS Radio Mystery when I was a small child in the 1970's. Where did all the time go?
3am, a chilly 16°, 11/29/23. Can't sleep, way too much on my mind. Time to shut it all off, bundle up,, got a cup of hot cocoa, tune into a good old fashion radio play,...like telling a kid a bedtime story. Thank you for these.
I love love love listening to these old time radio shows when I go to bed or during long drives. I don’t know how you don’t have more subscribers. Keep the videos coming 😊❤
"Eeeeeeeeeewww...come in. Welcome. I'm E.G Marshall "
Never gets old. Even after 50 years. A get ready to be spooked intro. Delightful.
Back in 1978 my then girlfriend son turn me on to this radio show. Now in 2023 I'm a radio show addict. So many shows so little time.
The mystery hour is not only great for Halloween but it's great for anytime.
I can remember going to Mississippi and listening to gospel radio at my Uncle Mac and Auntie Mary house . They had a radio like this one .
One of my favorites. Started listening to these in the mid 70s with my son. Love these.
As a kid, I can remember tuning into this program on my pocket AM radio( damn I’m old) thanks so much for posting 😃
I had a pocket 12 transistor radio. The brand escapes me but I listened to St.Louis Cardinal baseball and WLS top 40 out of Chicago back in the 60's with that transistor radio. I grew up on a farm near Kennett Missouri were Cheryl Crow is from. That was 200 miles South of St.Louis. Oh, and I am 66 years old.
parents made mistake of giving me a transistor radio in the belly of a toy collie. 😂
Hot cocoa, nappy time. Sounds good. Thanks for the storys❤
My mother and I used to listen to The Mystery Theater back in the mid 70's hosted by E.G Marshall Rip 😔🙏🏼
Me too. Good memories.

We were much better off when there was less technology and we had to use our brains and imagination more. And go outside for psychical activity.Youngsters these days don't know what they're missing.
So true . Imagination is needed.❤
Sounds like your stuck in the past bud.
@@toy5965 Yeah using ones brain and psychical fitness suck.I guess you'd know.
Technology brings us these stories once again!😊
@@JoElleBoh Nothing wrong with technology it's just too many become slaves to it.
Happy holidays to all.
Ty for posting.
Thank you
Thanks
Nice radio program
Love Leon Jenny. Did you know he was in Our Gang Comedy, "Bear Shooters?" (1930). Had that distinct voice. Death Blizzard was 1 of my favorites. ❤RIP.
Leon Janney.
Brilliant, thank you.
Good stuff Spellbinder, thanks!
Just once I want that wood radio to catch fire. 🔥
They should have done a story about a radio studio that burned decades ago and now the ghosts of bitching sponsors haunt the ruins.
🤣
Am radio. The babysitter introduced us.😢😮🎉🎉🎉 0:56
We used to "watch" the radio, the green eye, grow larger and smaller with volume changes, in the late 40's and early 50's.
props
What make and model radio was that?
I checked to see if there was going to be a premier and didn't see one listed. Then later there ended up being one. So I missed it. I didn't check again until it was going off. Sorry I missed it, but I'm catching up now. Thanks Spellbinder.
Thanks spellbinder, once again. 🤠💓💗💓🤠...
Yes tonight was a good set thank you
Storytime storytime
As usual, another great show...eyes shut, ears open, cuppa and bed. Mathew is slightly pathetic so luckily he's surrounded by so many witches.....
Hi, all.
Very true

Passing the key from the wife to the magician was how Harry Houdini did most of his escape tricks, so I find it difficult to accept that, in this story, the police would not already know this.

We didn't invade Truk Island.
Picture On The Wall was getting interesting but those crickets were so annoying I gave up.
Hello spellbinder. Wanted to say sorry for tonight and how i behaved and also apologized to the listener Shorti for behaving like that. Great show. Good work
Love you Theresa! 🙂🌷✨🦇
Mind Over Matter episode was a little on the rated R side🙄
I grew up when CBSRMT was still on the air. I'm surprised that producer Hy Brown allowed stories supposedly taking place in the present sound so dated.
I have never hear a touch tone phone used in any of these stories. The Rotary dial system was already obsolete when these shows were aired . Since all phones were made in plastic instead of metal by the 1970s, you don't hear the 'plastic touching plastic' as opposed to a metallic sound effect being used when the receiver is lifted lifted or being replaced.
The only times I heard men referred to as 'mugs', other than 'mugshot', was in the old Gangster movies from the 1930's. Women were never referred to as 'dolls' or 'dames' in everyday conversation in the 1970's.. even among criminals..
Before anyone has a chance to call me 'too picky' OR 'complaining' ect, I'm a Broadcast historian and have around 50,000 shows in my own collection. If I hear an error repeatedly, they just jump out at me right away.
So the boyfriend who helped plan the murder just walks away? That's an odd thing as these plays are usually moralistic. It ruined the story for me, with both guilty parties escaping justice 😣
Feel the same way IRL when people get away with having done awful acts. Happens a lot but doesn't mean it's right
The excessive commercial interruptions destroyed any possible enjoyment.
Thanks for the heads up. The ads just got turned on yesterday. I changed the settings to remove the mid-video ads and make the start and end ads skippable. 🙂🦇
@@spellbinders_of_suspense in this case- the ads don't bother me. I don't stare at the static image, it is simply the background to my work day. Good audio btw.
I do enjoy the retro ads in the broadcasts. Thank you for uploading. I’ve been enjoying the original classics of your early episodes too.
Some people like the nostalgia
Yup U got it right @dansweet6793 bedtime , nap time & anytime
