    For starters, with 3-7 oz jigs I would highly recommend going with more than 20 lb braid! For high speed jigging I would suggest 50 lb. braid finished off with a 6-10 foot top shot of 80 mono leader. With 20 lb briad, you'll bust off too many big AJs, kings, etc. Capt Mike

    Thanks for watching. We have made changes for the 2013 season and eliminated a percentage of advertising. Our first episode of 2013 is now live on our You Tube Channel. As far as catching bonito, the goal of Florida Sport Fishing TV is to keep it real, not every day is a banner day with giant fish after giant fish. Additionally, bonito are a big part of the Florida fishing community with many benefits. nevertheless, thank you again for watching and hope to make you a fan. - Capt Mike

    50 lb braid is perfect. I would stick with a 6 ft vertical jigging rod rated for 30-50 lb line. Its important you get a rod designed for vertical jigging with the correct guides that can handle braided line. A longer butt section is also important for achieving the proper action while working the jig. I fish CHAOS rods, the SPVJ 200G, but there are lots of options out there. Capt Mike

    I just bought a 24’ cc; I take delivery of my boat in mid December. I plan on doing a lot of jigging. A method I had no idea that existed. You and the other jigging posters have got me intrigued. Thank you for this and the high speed vertical jigging seminar video. Per your suggestions, I have heavily invested in two light action reels with high drag and two 6.5’ jigging rods. I should take stock in Williamson. I have learned to cast with my right hand, switch the rod to my left then reel with my right. I have always been comfortable with this style and it just feels natural to me. I notice both of you were reeling right handed. Does it matter that my non-dominant hand will be holding the rod? Could you reply with the coordinates of the wrecks out of Hillsboro that you were fishing? Again, I appreciate everything.-A north Broward offshore novice.

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  Před 6 lety

      We reel w/right hand when jigging w/spinners and w/left hand w/conventional reels, so it depends on the tackle you're fishing. many of the wrecks outside Hillsboro Inlet are public spots w/coordinates that are easily obtainable on charts and the reef locator on our website. - Capt Mike

    Nice video. I want to get into Jigging, although I won't do it often. I don't want to spend huge amounts of money on a Stella so I was wondering if a Penn Battle 8000 would be ok for jigging. I'm from South Africa and I'd most likely come across Ambers up to 35KG, some big Prodigal Son(Cobia), snappers and King Mackerel. The odd GT makes an appearance too, but again, not as big as some parts of the world. I might get into some Yellow Tail, and Yellow Fin Tuna up to 30KG's as well.

    Whats the cheapest jigging rod & reel combo out there that can land 20lbs plus fish. I was thinking of getting the Penn Rampage spinner jig rod with a Penn Fierce II 5,000 reel. LMK what you think. Money is a big issue for me so I go as cheap as possible on so called name brands. Thanks for sharing your knowledge about this type of fishing. I see a lot of other Kayak fisherman out here on Oʻahu using this technique. A short light rod with a quick reel makes speed jigging a lot easier to do. I learned that the hard way. Can you vertical jig with a regular 30 LB spinning rod and reel?

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  Před 7 lety +1

      You could, as long as reel is filled with braid. However, the longer and softer tip on a 7'0" or 7'6" rod will make you work just a little harder, thats why shorter rods with parabolic blanks and slower tips are better for vert. jigging. - Capt Mike

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  Před 10 lety

      PJ Cole First, it needs to be rigged with a short trace of wire or multi-strand cable to avoid getting cut off. I would drop down a vertical jig when fishing offshore on a weed line or debris. It is also fairly common for wahoo to smack vertical jigs being worked over shallower wrecks in 100-300 ft. Thanks for watching! - Capt Mike

  • @jayb4575
    @jayb4575 Před 10 lety

    You need a rod that is more parabolic, it is easier to fight the fish, also it looks like your rod is too long, match your rod to your jig, the rod is way to heavy for the jigs you are using. With those jigs you want a 200 g rod at the most, it will be more enjoyable I promise.

    Hey guys. Been trying this technique down in La Paz/Cabo. Noticed that on nearly every pull, the jig hook is catching on the line just above the tie ring of the jig which then completely messes up the retrieve. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a trick to avoiding this? Actually switched from standard butterfly jigs to the Shimano ones to avoid this but have a boat load of jigs!

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  Před 7 lety

      How are you rigging? Are you using excessively long assist hooks?

    • @keithkostek5606
      @keithkostek5606 Před 7 lety

      Nope just stock hooks on normal butterfly jigs. after watching several videos I think I may be giving too much slack on the pauses which causes the jig to flutter down and get hung up on the line. next time out will try with shorter pauses and reel faster.

    Those outfits are way too heavy for speed jigging especially if you are going to jig all day. A 5'8" nano carbon rod is more than long enough and may be pair it up with an Accurate BX2-500N, that should get it down already.
