- From Super Mario 64 to Super Mario Odyssey in his 3D games he always had a drowning death animation (not including Super Mario World/Land). They have changed it over time which Super Mario 64 was more horrifying... In This video, I cover the Evolution Of Mario Drowning Deaths in 3D Mario Games and as an added bonus, Super Smash Bros Wii U. I also included the Game Over Screens if the game had one.

So in the demo versions of Odyssey, Mario’s drowning animation was closer to that of 64, except instead of his eyes turning into X’s, they would glaze over until you only see the white of his eyes as he floats up (but still hunched over).

Seems I was mistaken. Mario does close his eyes, but you do get to see the white of them as he slowly shuts them.

I remember Galaxy's drowning animations scared me as a kid. Although the animations in the demo of Odyssey were pretty damn close to giving me nightmares

Shoot, 64 was even scarier. But it never scared me as a kid. Games nowadays are a disappointment.

Here's my opinion on the different animations:
0:29 and 0:35 Super Mario 64: Realistic movements, actual choking sound. Slightly disturbing because X-eyes appear a few moments after Mario stops moving.
1:07 Super Mario Sunshine: Not bad, but a bit too fast. Looks oddly peaceful after Mario turns on his back, likely because his eyes are closed.
1:40 Super Mario 64 DS: Close to the original, but without the choking sound. Strangely graceful pose at the end.
2:16 Super Mario Galaxy: A bit too fast, and it looks more like Mario was shot instead of drowned.
3:04 Super Mario Galaxy 2: Same as Super Mario Galaxy.
3:54 Super Mario Odyssey: Not very impressive, but the hands are good. I personally prefer the demo version.
Damn they actually get worse with every game... I want to see Mario shaking in panic as his skin turns blue.

Actually Odyssey toned down his death animations dramatically. For the most part its just the simple freeze and fall through the ground.

This is why the original Super Mario 64 is so unique and special. Looking back, Sunshine was excusable but the later games and its remake were a disappointment. Good thing I still have the game when Nintendo wasn't so afraid of doing crazy things in the '90s. But his drown in that game is creepy due to the realism, but I always laugh at that.

You missed one for Mario 64 I think if he gets hit by an enemy he’ll flip upside down and fall slowly.
Actually that is what happens, but it’s not exactly drowning if he dies from getting hit in the head.

Mario's drowning animation and sound effects are more realistic in Mario 64( original N64 version. NOT DS version.). In the Zelda games when Link drowns, he just makes a grunt when he drowns/faints underwater. In Ocarine of Time and MM, hell kick around while covering his mouth in a vain attempt to "push air" back into his lungs. In Twilight Princess, he JUST faints.
With your comment at the end, I’d rather watch Mario die than watch Bowser die. Plus Bowser is my favorite character. That’s just me.
