So Many Acropora in this 220 Gallon Tank!

- Vic dropped in on Ronald to check out his impressive 220-gallon tank! Ronald has been reef-keeping for about 30 years, and his corals showcase his expertise. The tank is primarily SPS, with so many Acropora corals that Ronald is contemplating either upgrading to a larger tank or ramping up his coral fragging efforts. Underneath the hood though, there's an array of different lighting varieties illuminating this system! Is it overkill or Just the perfect amount of light to hit the deepest parts of this 220 Gallon SPS tank?

A lot of the newer reefers don't realize this but this is very much an old school Frankenstein style tank you used to see on Reef Central. You really can only do this with decades of experience. Every single thing he does has a reason and contingencies to get a small benefit over something available off the shelf. NOT recommended for an inexperienced reefer! The night time air sparging in the sump with old skimmer pumps and bubble traps is *chef's kiss*
that is pro level setup man
Thank you so much for the compliments.
Yes, Ronald has took everything he has learned for the last 30 years and but it all together.
Nice vid, would like to see more of the corals next time
I will pass that along to the team! Thank you for watching and the feedback
Amazing job on creating this tank!
Man this system is CRAZY 🤯
Very intricate, but there is a logic to it!!!
Amazing corals. Nice work mate 😍
Thanks for watching!!!
Epic! Super nice guy, great frags and always willing to answer questions for the community in Nola
Sure is! Thanks for watching 😎
10:53, daily trace element dosing bottles + monthly corrections for sure (undercover moonshiner) they should have spoke about this ….. Awesome growth and beautiful reef!
I also noticed the Moonshiner bottles. Is Ronald using the method? His tank is beautiful!
Not the Moonshiners method. But when I do ICP tests, I’ll use their elements to make corrections. I do use Rubidium, iron, Maneese, Chromium and molybdenum on a daily basis
I want to start a reef tank, But 16:20 just BOGGLES my mind. I don't have 30 years left to figure that out. Awesome Tank Ronald ! 👍
Thank you so much
Ronald has been at it for some time but trust us you can get it right away.
I had to use an explative when seeing this tank. Truly mind blowing.
HAHA 100% of to do that.
This aquarium is amazing beautiful corals, stunning! This guy is like a mad professor.
The tank was stunning for sure.
Only 2 years ! ? ! We need to see more , even the frag tanks !
Hopefully when he gets that tank upgrade we can go back!!! 😉
Phenomenal set up. I need to up my game
It was beautiful for sure
Awesome tank
Stunning🤩
wow great tank, a true specialist.
Yes he is!
Beautiful tank.
Agreed! Thank you for watching!
Loving this tank setup thought of everything DIY baby.
Very well thought out system. You could tell that a ton of thought and time went into it!!!
wow , wow , wow, thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching
Another great video and an amazing tank! I’ve hesitated getting into Acros as I thought my nutrients are too high, but his nitrates are 30-35 and phosphate 0.8 - 1.2 and his Acros are stunning! I might have to start dipping my toes into the world of sticks!
My waterbox cube nitrates were 20-40 with acro's and they were fine. Start with a digi or mili and you should be fine. My newer tank I'm still working the kinks out my nitrates are super high 30-60 and they are still good and my Walt Disney frag is in there and looks happy
@helenchambers169 That's actually not true. Your nitrates and Phosphate is ok for Acropora. You'll need to have good flow and good lighting and they'll do fine with what your levels are. They NEED nitrates and Phosphates.
@@insideout518 thank you for your input - might have to go shopping!
@@insideout518 thank you, will definitely start - cheap first!😀
I'd say go for it. We run our nutrients high with acros as well(a little lower than Ronald though). Just start off with some bulletproof acros such as green slimer and paletta pink tip.
You dont need so many complicated things to have a good tank.
That is correct as well, We have another video of a reefer who did a very basic set up and just very small frags and his system looks AMAZING!
superb
Thanks for watching!!!
Beautiful tank! What is the green coral at 6:01?
That’s a baby Cup Coral. Very large polyps on that one
Skimmer pump aerating in the sump, never heard of this, I wonder if it works to increase your ph
It does when you control it. You have to feed it with air drawn from outside. Either put it on a timer to only come on at night, or on a ph control of some kind. I use the hydros controller combined with a Hydros power strip. Then tie it in with PH probe dependencies and set the PH parameters to turn on those power outlets when PH drops below 8.25. You have to control it somehow, cuz if it runs all day, PH WILL climb more and more with each day until it reaches dangerous levels. This of corse depends on size of tank, other factors that lower PH, and also how large of an aerator pump you use. You should also devise some way to capture the bubbles not allowing them to get back to the display, or at least minimize as much as possible.
Special Note: if you have a mosquito truck passing your house on a regular basis, program the hydros NOT to operate or engage that particular outlet during their spray schedule. So if they usually pass between 7pm and 8pm. Tell hydros to schedule it NOt to come in between 6pm and like 9pm. Ya don’t want Mosquito spray contaminating your tank. If you’re just gonna use a programmable timer, then obviously You know to program it NOT to come on until after the mosquito truck passes
Top down shot @ 10:11👌 🙌
The cherry on top!
Quiero la camisa 😢
😎👍🏻
Thanks for watching 😁
Growing all that algae may be the cause having to dose nitrate and phosphate?
You want to have nutrients/nutrition in, and a robust nutrient export system. Refugium also supply’s a safe haven for pods, and algae scrubber releases oxygen and other beneficial elements back into the water column
well I run a 45cm cube with 2x Kesseil a360x... so It's not weird that he has so many lights xD
It is and yours even more for this small size😂
@@tomg5405 growing sps like crazy :)
It seems to be working here, look at the colors and growth of the acros 🤯
👏🔥💯👌
Thank you!
Got any advice for a poor hobbyist?
In how to start out?
@@WorldWideCorals Yes
Electric bill? Goodbye 😀👋
Nah, LEDs aren't bad on electric bill and neither is the equipment. I think people worry about that a lot, but it's not that bad.
i think when you can afford all that stuff you dont really look at your electricit bill
It's probably not as bad as you would think.
