    Great review; thanks for sharing. That 10 kHz peak is a real surprise to me, from a company in the pro audio market, but I may end up going with these anyway. My use is almost 100% on a single laptop, so it's not a huge deal to set the EQ notch once. For audio production work, I can just keep using my trusty Sennheiser phones. :)

    I've had the MMX 300 for about 2 years. I completely agree that it's evolutionary and not revolutionary. I find the earpads pretty bad so got aftermarket pleather ones that are incredibly comfortable. The soundstage isn't huge because they're not open back but I find it very detailed and I love the sound of these through a USB headphone amplifier. I also find these sound wonderful for music or movies (probably better than gaming).

      Hello mate, I know it has been 5 months since you have made this comment but I would love to know exactly what earpads you've gotten for your MMX 300. I am love mine but I am picky when it comes to comfort so I have them in the case because I cannot use them for more than 30 minutes without hating how they feel around my ears.

    Excellent information. Thanks a lot. The microphone appears impressive for a headset; it really beat your HyperX here.
    I have the Beyerdynamic Lagoon wireless for music; they are excellent and tops the other brands in the $400 CAD or so price area. For video games, I think I'll have to stick with the Hyper X USB line. The audio is excellent for games, videos, and music; no 3.5mm cable fidgeting; very durable, and one third the price.

    I own the DT 770 pros, as well as these headphones. Surprisingly, these sound considerably better! The mid range is presented much nicer. It’s warmer, and a bit more impactful in the mid range. The bass and treble largely resemble the DT 770 pros. The treble does not bother me one bit. But, I am less sensitive to harsh treble than most listeners. The treble presentation is nice. The sensitivity is acceptable, but close to not loud enough. When I plugged it into my iPhone with the iphone DAC, it is far too quiet, I am a loud listener. Fortunately, when I use a USB DAC, or plugged into the controller for my PlayStation 5, the volume can reach good levels.

    You can paper towel mod most of that spike out of there. Just cut a circle of paper towel and put it between the driver and the padding. I do this will all my Beyer headphones that have that treble spike. I'll be picking these up as I love the DT770 with the paper towel mod. Thanks for the informative review!

    I’m using the mmx 300 with my ps5 and it really brought my experience to another level. BUT: without an external sound card their were way too quiet (for example: AirPods go way louder). So not usable for competitive shooters. I therefore also bought a sound blaster G6 and now I’m super happy with them. It’s not a cheap set up. G3 also works and is easier to use due to app remote, but G6 has more power and offers more settings.

    Hi Mate, digging your content as always, good to know you are doing well. In my opinion this is the best microphone in any headset, with that said, I found them to sound exactly as the DT 770 so I could not feel that I was not beeing ripped off. More to that last thought, thay are in the mark of the 450 USD in my country... Nevertheless if you have the money I don't think you would be dissapointed with them...

    Do you know if there are any earpads available that allow more sound into the headset?
    I've just bought a pair but being used to an open back headset I find the noise isolation makes it difficult for me to hear my own voice while playing games.
    I wondered if a set of less dense pads would help. Would try anything because I really love the comfort and sound quality of this headset!

    I have a question if you don’t mind
    I’ve purchased this headset and waiting for it to arrive, but i’m kinda worried about imaging in-game, like fps games. Are these plug and play ready for fps games or as you mentioned we might need to change in eq settings a little bit to get clear imaging/direction in-game? Than you in advance

      You are welcome! Thank you for checking out the video.
      They image very well - plug and play there. If you need to EQ anything, it will be the treble spike and that is only if you find them fatiguing (many do).

  • @geoff3610
    @geoff3610 Před 2 lety +20

    generally a treble heavier sound is preferred for games where imaging and spatial sound is important, because much of the audible cues we use to determine direction are higher pitched, such as steps, taps, drops, etc. Bass is more for the ambience and size of the room. at least in my experience. What would you say are the best cans for a console user?

  • @ademite
    @ademite Před 3 lety +6

    Good stuff. I was either going to get the hyperx cloud alpha and the hyperx solocast microphone both are around $140 total out the door and still some money left over for a new mouse or these headphones with no external mic. I'm leaning towards 3 new peripherals. As it's still cheaper than this headset. While I don't mind spending more money for a superior product I question durability and not only that there is also over engineering as it is a thing. Just to get 20% better audio quality but you have to spend an extra $100+ to me is not justify able. I like to have 1 headset and be done, unlike other people like z reviews who has 100 headsets. That too me is what merica consumerism is all about. Personally that's a huge waste of money. Hence why I constantly check products out for weeks and even months before I even jump the gun on a purchase.

    Fantastic review. Yeah, I was one of those people hoping you'd do this piece. The treble doesn't affect me at all and seems to give this headset just the right amount of clarity at the upper end, for me at least. Having said that, I ordered a set of the Dekoni pads (Zeos recommended) which I swapped out immediately, and all I have to say is I think this headset is excellent sound quality wise. I don't even bother EQing them; maybe the new pads help out here?
    I was surprised by the microphone test you did, all the reviews say it's meant to be great, best thing since sliced bread, but the actual comparison recording with the HyperX was an eye-opener.

Lately been thinking about getting the DT 1990 pro or 990 pro and maybe getting a mod mic wireless and any amp that can run the headphones, Is the upgrade to those Headphones from the ones I have worth it ? to go through the hassle of adding a separate mic and getting an amp and paying like $800 for the setup ? would really appreciate your take on this, cheers.

      First - yes, the upgrade from your current setup to a Tygr 300R would be pretty big and not that expensive. You could do the 1990 or 990 but make sure you can EQ the treble peaks.
      Second - you don't need $800 for good separates. Tygr 300R and it's mic together are like $300 (OOS right now I realize). Tygr 300R, a MOTU M2 (amzn.to/39WBXx0) and an inexpensive XLR mic for $500 or less.

      I have both the MMX 300 and the TYGR 300 R here at home. Personally, I like the MMX 300 much better. In terms of sound, the two really don't compare and my preference is for the MMX. Especially with music, I hear big differences and can clearly experience more details with the MMX than with the TYGR. The bass is also much better with the MMX. In gaming, my opinion is rather neutral, I don't feel that the open-back TYGR gives much better localisation and both perform well here. Both are good products, I think it's more about personal taste, what you think sounds better.

    I have these now ... I'm not a fan. I'm trying to replace my old Syberia 650s, can't find anything that overall sounds better.
    Sure, these MMX300s sounds cleaner, clearer. But soundstage and positional awareness, footsteps etc was never an issue.
    These MMX300's lack basically all the OOMPH the Syberia 650s provided - maybe it was reverb, I don't know. With the MMX300s I am "listening to a video game" and it sounds amazing. With the old Syberia 650s I was "actually in a Warzone" when explosions started going off, of when firing a heavy sounding gun. I could FEEL it, not just "hear it really well"
    So far I've tried the Razer Blackshark V2 Pros, SteelSeries Arctis Pro's + DAC, MMX300's and none of them give that OOMPH... I'm getting kind of desperate at this stage. Not sure if I should get an AMP/DAC (I shouldn't, because the MMX300s are only 32ohms, but some people say I should), should I keep looking for another headset, maybe with 50mm drivers to get that better sub-bass? At a total loss right now.

Now things are clear for me, TYGR 300R is the way to go for gaming with Beyers, between the sharp treble, closed back and that 300 USD/Euro pricetag, I would pick a TYGR instead and buy a modmic. In Europe buying straight from Beyerdynamic the TYGR cost 140 euros (170 USD), that microphone in the MMX 300 Gen 2 is not worth the extra 130 USD/150Euros. Shame my European friends can't come to America and bring it to me as a favour due to all the COVID-19 migratory restrictions or I would already own a TYGR 300R. Well there's that Senn Drop PC38X but those drops take forever COVID-19 might as well be over by then and a german friend might as well bring a TYGR 300R when they come to visit me lol. - super heavy
