That’s a bit of a duh study. I’m a GenX’er. When I was young we only had mostly Italian, and a few inauthentic Chinese. But as we grew and had more flavorful non-European options, we gravitated to that. Now Millennials and GenZ’ers have access to more authentic, spicier kinds of foods. That also coincides with being more open culturally over the years.
Please be mindful of your use of “inauthentic” and “authentic”. Many times immigrants communities have to adapted their cuisine with what’s available. By saying authentic or inauthentic you are discounting their food. And these changes make a near cuisine like a Chinese American cuisine. It’s just a little negative or invalidating.
Yeah. Everyone loves Taco Bell more than Pizza Hut.

I would say that Mexican food is more popular these days because it’s relatively healthier and cheaper than most other types of cuisine. Plus, it offers a variety of flavors ranging from spicy to sweet, spicy being the more popular of the two. Not to mention that because some of the ingredients are always familiar to Americans, cooking isn’t considered much of a chore compared to making Chinese food, in which you really have to know your brands. This is of course coming from a millennial herself. ;)
Actually not, obesity is a major problem in Mexico, whereas in Italy as far as i know it is not, fast food pizza does not count as italian cuisine.
@@TheZcarekrow obesity is a problem in Mexico due to American style junk foods- chips, cookies, Coca Cola. But for those who eat traditional Mexican food, it’s healthy. Lots of fresh veggies and fruit.
@@rgdssd Fresh veggies and fruit? More like fried trash and high carb dishes and drinks
@@TheZcarekrow that's not Mexican food pal, there's a difference between Mexican food and popular food consumed in Mexico
@@ethirium4389 Yes it is mate, yes it is, i know first hand what mexican food is, i don't know what do you think i am reffering to but popular food consumed in Mexico doesnt have to be excluded from the mexican food label.
It appears there's more variety in Mexican food and overall, it seems healthier. I love that you can eat a completely plant based dish full of protein and veggies without having to sacrifice flavor. Plus it's very accessible from a price point to the masses.
Mexico is huge, so you get a range of different regional foods. It's much more than tacos.
I think this shift makes sense for several reasons (although my family's from Texas and across the generations, we couldn't care less about Italian food, so I might be a little biased). Younger people aren't big salad fans, for one, but we still want to eat healthy, and it's much easier to get all your food groups in a taco or burrito, which you can carry with you, than it is to carry and eat several different things. There's the spice factor, of course, but also just proximity. The taco truck is trendy, but who's going to a spaghetti truck? I mean, don't get me wrong-- I love pasta. But as someone else said, Mexican food (the simple version, anyway) is just the same ingredients served a bunch of different ways. There's like a million different types of pasta. It's overwhelming.
We still love salad but they want like $12 for romaine and iceberg lettuce!! Like common an expensive burrito is like $7
I think it’s price, availability, and taste, and yes it’s easier to modify mexican food to make it a little healthier. Pasta is expensive for what you get and people can easily make it at home. It’s also inconvenient to eat. I think it’s also a regional thing.
who says young people arent buying $13 sweetgreen salads lol
No, you dont know mexican food, the food of the North of México, food that you believe know, Is very diferente in the Center, in the coasts, in the south, are totally differents,
@@gregoriosalazar1418 I'm fully aware that what we consider "Mexican food" in the U.S. is very different from actual food in Mexico. But having lived abroad in several different places, you'll find that's the case everywhere for every type of cuisine. Even the "American food" I get in Korea isn't exactly the same as the American food I actually get back home. Even the "Southern food" I've eaten in other regions of the US isn't the same as actual Southern cuisine I eat back home.

What's funny is that although Italian and Mexican cuisines are quite different there is some overlap due to the Spanish bringing foods popular in both Italy and Spain.
So for example things like olive oil/olives, figs, nuts, pomegranates, parsley, basil, grapes (wine to a lesser degree due to competition worries), pasta soups (fideo aka angel hair pasta, etc ), bean soups, garbanzos/chickpeas, lentils, fava beans (habas in Spanish), cheeses (example: Mexico has a thouroughly native Mexican version of ricotta called requesón), bread techniques, etc.
Breaded meats like Italian Chicken parmigiana or Milanese, are consumed in Mexico as "Mexican" fare (although popular throughout Latin America and other European countries), but in Mexico called a milanesa de pollo. Actually in Mexico the most common milanesa is a thin breaded beef steak which is called a "milanesa de filete de res" (which is less common in Europe). It's often used to make a classic Mexican savory sandwich, the Torta (which can have any filling).
Many people are unaware, but Spain ruled both Mexico (as the viceroyalty of New Spain), and large parts of Northern and Southern Italy--at the same time. The southern portion of Italy was also a viceroyalty like the Spanish had in the Americas, and often had Spanish viceroys (akin to governors) ruling southern Italy (in fact the Medicis from northern Italy, married into a Spanish viceroyal family of southern Italy to further secure their elite status--their descendants included most European royals including Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI).
At one point Mexico had an Italian born viceroy Miguel de la Grúa Talamanca de Carini y Branciforte, 1st Marquis of Branciforte. New Spain/Mexico other times had mostly Spanish and even French and Portuguese origin viceroys from time to time. Even the Spanish viceroys in Italy however, were sometimes transferred to oversee Mexico/New Spain or vice versa, after their administration in Mexico was finalized they were transferred to Italy.
When the King of Spain expelled the Jesuits from Mexico (New Spain), he exiled them to Italy--and most of them were born to well off Mexican families and educated in Mexico. They didn't have a choice though.
It was during this period that the tomato (native to Mexico) made its way to Italy--as well as corn (polenta), vanilla, cacao, squash (other foods native to Mexico) and even the central Mexican cacti that grows in the wild (called nopales in Mexico). These cacti now grow in the wild in the Italian peninsula as well. The Italian zucchini/courgette is actually a domesticated version of Mexican squashes similar to the zucchini. In Mexico cheese stuffed squash similar to a zucchini is sometimes cooked in a tomato (Mexican) oregano sauce (in fact Mexicans have our own home grown versions of ratatouille--a French dish). Most sofrito bases in Mexico that are used in Mexican rice or pasta soups are tomato based, and the flavors of the tomato sauces sometimes are quite similar to those used in Italy since garlic and onion are also universally used in Mexico for tomato sauces (sofrito). And squash blossoms are in dishes in both countries--in Mexico often in quesadillas and soups. In Italy stuffed with ricotta or something else.
Also, although the Italians didn't have as big an impact on Mexican baking, as did the French (after Spanish, French is the second most common European descent ancestry among Mexicans) they had some influence on certain types of Mexican breads and pastries. Italian bakers, like the French, formed a significant entrepreneurial migratory group to Mexico during the 300 year colonial period, and even after independence to a lesser degree though.
To be clear, Mexico didn't receive as many Italian immigrants proportionally as Argentina did at the turn of the 19th-20th century. However, Mexico still received a sizeable number, and there are still majority Italian descent villages in some areas of Mexico (like the town of Chipilo, Puebla).

As Mexican, I don't try to sound coky, but Mexican food is the best in the world for many reasons: tasty, a large number of options and variety (it's not only tacos and guacamole), it's mostly easy to make (just for a few exeptions), easy to find the ingredients (in exeption for some chillies), mostly you can eat it on street (no table needed), it's not square (you can use your creativity for many of the dishes) and is cheap, what more you ask for??? Pizza is cheap??? C'mon, it's cheaper and faster to make a bunch of tacos...

UNESCO has Mexican and French cuisine in a class of their own, look it up. Hopefully they’ll get around to trying ALL OR MOST of the food the that’s been designated cultural treasures. It pains me to see people get so close to exploring the menu but then revert to tacos/burritos/enchiladas. There’s literally a different food/recipe for each day of the year. I’m lucky that I eat everything and so when I try others’ foods I explore the menus and ask for it “the way it comes”. No altering the recipe. Most "Italian" food found in the U.S. isn't recognizable to the average Italian. It's a hybrid of the original dishes. Most "Italian" food found in the U.S. is based on southern Italian food which Italians in the north of the country would say isn't Italian. Mexican food in the U.S. is similarly hybridized but receives constant infusions from south of the border. That said, the average American that "loves" Mexican food has only sampled five-percent of real Mexican food.
Speaking as an Italian America, modern Italians from Italy need to loosen up.
