-- Diana Ross & the Supremes - medley ("The Lady Is a Tramp" and "Let's Get Away from It All") "Day After Day" and "I'm Living in Shame" - Zábava
Mary's wig is just the best! Cindy always looks gorgeous in long hair (and she has the best hips in the business!) and Diana just has that star power that literally leaps off the screen and into your heart. I love all 3 of these gals. Anyone says that the harmony was gone after Flo left, this clip proves it wrong!
You are correct, Doolie. She is truly a fashion icon for the ages. No one can work a dress like she can. The gowns are her current tour are simply magnificent.
They all look beautiful, just beautiful. Mary really stands out though - gorgeous!
💯
Her voice is rich-sounding, so pure and simply amazing!
Diana Ross has such a lovely sweet voice. No one can sing like that. I wish i could sing like Diana Ross.
Diana Ross and the Supremes: Very best.
Diana Ross ⭐
All three girls look great here...but I must confess my eyes were drawn to Miss Birdsong. She is drop-dead gorgeous. Please, let us all pray that she be restored to good health this year and continue to bless the lives of all Supremes fans with her grace, charm, humility, and good heart!
I agree with you. I therefore found it very strange that Cindy and Mary were quickly ushered off the stage as soon as they finished their final song, leaving Miss Ross to give the final closing speech by herself. Would it have been so awful to keep Mary and Cindy on stage while Miss Ross gives what amounts to be a 60 second closing speech? Was she that threatened by them?
mary and cindy were often surprised at the last minute when the band would start to play music that mary and cindy had not be told about so diana could have her solo spot right in the middle of a Supremes concert. more games by diana and berry to diminsh them in the group and belittle them..@@jackanthony976
Shortly after this Cindy lost 15 pounds and looked like a total SUPER MODEL
It's amazing Ross makes it through this: her voice is really shot as you can hear at times (and in the opening number, where she really sounds thin). A lot of her talent is sheer willpower.
Miss Ross says she does not vocalize.
They do look lovely great fantastic x
Patti LaBelle always have Cindy Birdsong credit" She was a pretty girl with a soft and beautiful voice."(she sounded the way she looked).
Love Mary Wilson!
Yes! So do I! Mary is the one that kept my attention when it came to the Supremes.
Simply beautiful and fantastic
Who ever said Mary Wilson is ugly told a lie because was the sexy and pretty one.
Arthur Moon yep. Diane "yes i used her real name" Ross is ugly. Florence Ballard, RIP, was a more soulful singer with a 3.5 octave range to die for. Poor Florence never got the chance she deserved. Diane slept with everybody at Motown to get her lead singer status, and from what I've heard verbally threatened those who got in Her way. Diane has a thin weak voice. At Florence's funeral, she actually made it all about HER by throwing a big temper tantrum.
@@RhiannaBarr pussy for Fame
Arthur Moon, I've been a diehard fan since 1965 and have collections of recordings and memorabilia to prove it. I have never heard anyone say that Mary was ugly. She was always the beautiful and yes, the sexy one.
oh may mary ws sooo pretty and she stood out ... just a fantastic looking women....
Cindy looks great too. I like that wig on her.
I agree ~ I don't think that Diana and Mary were "enemies" by any means, and Diana may have been aggressive and ambitious, but do you know of someone who made it to the top who didn't have those qualities? I always feel badly that Flo isn't in these later appearances, but I also wish that Flo would have found a way to stick it out until Diana's solo departure, then it would have been Flo, Mary and a new member.
Well incase you haven't noticed, this is Diana Ross and The Supremes, the part of the group years were all the attention was on Ross instead of sharing it with Wilson and Birdsong who seem to be her back up singers instead of being group members. There was alot of pressure on Diane and Mary & Cindy were limited in many things. In other words, Mary and Cindy, weren't allowed to sing lead, say anything in a interview and weren't allowed to get in the spotlight. Read the books.
OMG!!What a class act,i cant stop replaying it,lol.Dianas voice is so powerful on THE LADY IS A TRAMP!!Shes lost some of that clarity & crispness in her voice over the years!
I saw this when it aired on TV back in 1969. I really enjoyed the show and the ladies looked beautiful.
yeah that was when they were starting to let let black people on tv on the regular.
Love the wigs and the dresses on all three ladies and this performance is very nice as well.
"Say", Mary Wilson: Why you are the most beautiful woman of the world?
Mary and Cind look absolutely beautiful!
I keep watching this show over and over. What a gift for your adding it - thanks a lot. The whole show is a classic, with all the legends and their talents. The Supremes are gorgeous and fabulous here. Thank god for CZcams. Not just Diana, but Diana paired with Flo, Cindy and Mary was a total package of such 3 familiar and unique talented entertainers. I can't get that boat-in-Idaho song outta my head, and I love it. ;)
I agree. God has also blessed Mary with a beautiful spirit to go with it.
Florence was accepting of the whole deal until her ONE solo got cut from the show. As Mary said on 20/20--"Diane has to have it all!!"
I love ALL three of these legendary ladies. Of course I love Miss Florence Ballard as well.
Diana kills it..
Diana Ross put down Dinah Shore at the end! Missed that the first time I watched this one last year !!
To say they look like a million bucks would be an understatement.Diana looks real good in that fro she can pull it off because she is a beautiful black woman
2:48 "Guess what... I need five bucks!"
That was too funny!!!
I agree with you. I think if Diane and Berry went to Flo and Mary of the plans, things would have been different. Diana could have still be groomed as the solo to be act without having Mary and Flo be stepped on. Mary and especially Flo could have had one song per every two album. It would not have hurt. Anyway, heartandsoul22 I like your approach and I totally get what you are saying. Don't focus on the disrespected negatives of others.
Jealousy won't get you nowhere kurtsupreme. The music industry knows who was lead on all those smash hits in the 60's. Diana and Berry ain't manipulating anything, you're just mad because Diana Ross became more than just a member of a singing group and she achieved her dream. Today in 2013 she continues to sell out her tour which is going on 4 years old amazing. She also has 5 well educated and talented kids along with 2 beautiful grandkids. She is a great business women and she sets her own schedule. Diana Ross is enjoying her accomplishments and so are her millions of fans old and new. Long live the original diva and Boss.
And yet it still is not enough for Miss Ross. I recently read that she is dealing with depression. Imagine that....Depression! What in the world would she be depressed about?
@SpazChat I've been hearing Diane sing live performances since before they became "Diane Ross & The Supremes" while Florence was still with the group and Diane is always been what we call in the industry "THE QUEEN OF LOOPING" if you don't know what that means look it up!
Missbirdsong you are right. It was no suprise at all. But don't you understand why Mary refuses to be treated in that manner anymore. Like she and her feelings don't matter. She is apart of the legendary Supremes!
Because she just simply is;Beautyful;
Mary was always the prettiest
Even the closing song is priceless. All that left is the theater. Today on Vine Street today. If only 😪 the public new what us over 50 years of age could say today.
Folks, let's be nice and appreciate all the ladies . . . .
Mary Wilson was drop alive gorgeous. The gowns were worn on the first post Diana Ross and the Supremes album cover, with Jean Terrell. I wonder if Jean was wearing Diana's gown? The album by the way is "Right On" and it is a classic now, and deservingly so.
@Kent Allen: I am pretty sure that Jean Terrell's gown was made from that design, Ms. Terrell was bigger than Diana Ross!
I'll never criticize Diana's vocals because they (especially at this time in her career) were flawless. What I do find annoying is that by now, it was truly ALL about Diana. Face it, Berry called the shots and M&C just became singing 'earrings'. I really don't like this era of the group, you can see there's no love lost here. Thank GOD the group gained 'friendship' later on with Jean, Lynda, Scherrie & Susaye who are all consummate performers.
you are so right but if you read the Motown books about The Supremes, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, Diana Ross and/or Berry Gordy you know that was the goal at this point. Early in their career it wasnt certain that Ross could handle a solo career, especially with the huge fan base that Flo and Mary had individually. When they were set to kick Flo out of the Supremes, as much as Diana wanted that spotlight she was not certain that she could carry the Supremes without Flo. By this time, Flo had been gone for a couple of years and Diana was maintaining and growing more confident in her own star power, especially over Mary and Cindy.
Love the ending
Sunday nights were Ed Sullivan. But for Me it was Satuday nights at 10;00 p.m. on ABC for the HOLLYWOOD PALACE. For ever in my memory.
Mary does look fabulous. RIP FLO
They wore these gowns to a Jesse Jackson event in Chicago when they were appeaing at the Congress Theater. People almost dropped dead when they walked into the event!
THE SUPREMES have not been promoted by ANYONE since 1970. Diane's solo career has been heavily promoted from that date to this very day. The fact that the average Joe can't name the 3 SUPREMES today means absolutely nothing! During the 1960's, everyone knew their names as they were "America's Sweethearts." The fact that their legacy has been diminished by Diane's solo career has more to do with the shortness of people's memory and the limitation of "the historical record" tather than the facts!
LOL carolinaguy, I thought the same thing about Mary. Im sure she didnt appreciate when Diana put her hand in front of her face here either, and the camera had to go up to avoid it. Cindy said at first she couldnt believe Diana was doing it on purpose but then she sadly realized she was! But at least the end was near and they could become a true group again with Jean.
"The tension was high during this part of the group years. "
what makes you say that
what tension did they have in this part of the group years
Mary was so pretty
Mary is the most beautiful of them all!! ABSOLUTE GLAMOUR GIRL!
She got it
2:16 Diana says "folks I hate" and looks at Mary. LOL
Mary did talk when she asked about California. But It wouldn't hurt for them to talk more but clearly this part of the group years were to get Diane Moving a soloist.
YEah that song do be jamin.
You are correct . . . Cindy is not doing well . . . and yes, let's keep her in our prayers.
MASONMARTINEZ: What do you mean Cindy is not doing well. Is she sick?
Cindy is lookin FAB!!!
She always looked at mary when she said that part in the song.Almost in every video ive seen on youtube
oh
yea that makes alot of sense
thanks for sharing that with me
my godness mary was most beautiful she stood out
i like diana with short hair.looks good on her
When it is your money on the line, trust....you are going to be very careful who you invest in. People talk as if it were a sure thing no matter who he invested in. Do you really think he would have neglected the others if he TRULY KNEW he could make a fortune? Get real people? The man knew Diana would be a money maker. He saw dollar signs in her unique approach to capture a wider audience than the others.
@TWTR4EVER You are exactly correct! Diane had a "novelty" voice and that is what Berry assumed they buying back in the sixties. It had nothing to do w ith talent when you consider the enormous amount of time in spoon feeding the songs and the exorbitant recording costs to get the right take from Diane Ross!
According to Raynoma Gordy It was Smokey Robinson who had to convince Berry Gordy to accept Diana Ross as the lead singer of the Supremes. Berry thought Diana's voice sounded "weird" and that she sang through her nose. Smokey agreed with that assessment , but then Smokey pointed out to Berry that Diana Ross had a unique "sound" and she did not sound like anyone else. With much reluctance Berry followed Smokey's advice thus green lighting more Supremes recordings with Diana as lead on most of them.
Mary Wilson is fine as hell! Whew!!!!
@paul51 she is so underrated..but when shes gone like Michael..then they will realize how Great she was.
They SOUND absolutely beautiful TOO! You can 'hear' 'em ......... in 'some' parts!
;-p
I read as of recent that Cindy Birdsong's health is deteriorating. Let's keep her in our prayers.
She should NOT be taking Flo s place... There are rules to follow and God is always watching.
Yea there could have been a bit more sharing, but it wasn't meant to be. Mary and Flo also had charisma, but because of their roles in the group, it didn't allow to be showcased. When Cindy came, same situation.
@DetroitLives313 Anyone that knows the art of singing can clearly identify a Diane's performance that under no certain terms will go over without BACKGROUND VOCALS to piggy ride her over every note she can hit, camouflage her harmonizing, there's a;lways "looping," for those ignorant to the tricks of the trade this is a pre recorded track of orchestration sometimes her own studio SYNTHESIZE vocals in certain parts of the song to make her sound good!
MEDIOCRE VOICE AT BEST!
Great! I, personally, prefer the original Supremes when it was Flo, Mary and Diana.
@SpazChat And so What?
Diana has never been flown under the commission of the UNITED STATES to Russia or Other countries To REPRESENT this COUNTRY and to make amends and bind the broken with HER hit records or her voice or her talent or her monumental 'success' either, and neither has any other that 'I' know of. It is SUPREME HONOR to be recognized as having the potential and the capability TO do that..... even WITHOUT having had the privilege of hit records! THAT says ALOT MORE than those!
@1990soulman I think that Diana is 5'5". I know that Mary is 5'4". Flo was 5'8", Cindy is 5'7". Jean is 5'10" (and towered over, both, Cindy amd Mary). THink. I could be wrong. The heels on Diana's shoes may be higher than on Mary and Cindy. Once again, I, may, be wrong.
Wow @ 1:33-1:36...such beautiful harmony
I guess it was apart of the act. Who knows? The tension was high during this part of the group years.
agree!
@TheMotownMoron Diane Ross "abandon" The Supremes in 1969 for a "solo" career, Mary Wilson continued The Supremes and as she told Florence Ballard, "Don't Worry, I will take care of it Flo" for 8 more years she kept The Supremes viable, today it has earned her the title of "QUINTESSENTIAL SUPREME" something Diane will never be, Diane got her glitz & fortune but the legacy? The "solo" is in question and "THE SUPREMES" legacy, she's there, but not the heart of the group, she' sin trouble!
@LANORDA9 Exactly, artists during that time did what they were told to do whether they liked it or not. It is unfortunate that allot of talent was pushed to the wayside as a result. But it is what it is and we have the legacy that we have as a result. That does not mean that it is bad, again, it is what it is. Thank you for bringing out your point.
how did diana or singers in general grunt like that at 3:04
I wonder why Diana turns to face Mary when she says "I never bother with folks that I hate..."?
That's what you called STACKED!!!! SEXY!!!
@LANORDA9 We people know that under the spectrum on which you chose to make your analogy "she kept her eye on the ball," the ball was BERRY GORDY" and she did manipulated him, got preferential treatment, and step by step kept all members of the group under her shadow while she build her solo career!
How was her solo career any different than her career with the Supremes? I remember seeing Miss Ross perform one of her first solo shows and it was basically the same as her Supremes show except for the fact that she did not have to share the stage and the glory with two other women (namely Mary and Florence..then Cindy) Also in her solo show she would disappear for many minutes several times during the show to change her gown, something she never did with the Supremes. After the show I thought, so she went solo. So what? She still needed three backup singers (who she placed behind the curtain) to take the place of Mary and Cindy.
Yes, right after Lady is a Tramp MIss Ross completely blocks Mary's face at the ending...luckily the cameraman was quick on his feet so he raised the camera so that Mary's face could be seen.
man mary was fine back then and diana got better looking with time cus boy was she skinty
@TWTR4EVER Ain't No Mountain High Enough #1
Supremes Got Thr Right To Love #21
Get over it!!!!
maybe she was talking about flo ?
You guyz get so psychological about it all, as if it's a clip being studied as part of a course thesis. It's a 1969 TV show cli;. They were great. Enjoy it and them from what they were, and are. DMC probably haven't studied these clips, or brooded on their times as Supremes, as much as some of you are doing here since, likely, 1970. Instead of remembering Flo for what she DID accomplish through becoming a Supreme, she ends up being always remembered for the way she ended - not fair to her.
so i says i have not see all of these famous people only some i listen to them all.i have only seen about half.so i went and there was little girls crying yelling and the mothers were saying they brought them because they were the same way about new edition.here iam grammy and telling them they are no temptations.but i never cryed over the tempts.music to day has just lost something but i listen to new artist that way i will know not to listen any more if i do not like them....
Watch 'em well. You can 'SEE' it! Mary is the consumate performer and masks it WELL...... But it's all over Cindy's FACE the whole time! Everytime I see this, I say, 'I Feel it'. "Something's WRONG'! This time, Cindy "can't" Hide it!
Cindy Birdsong looked so bored singing the background in "I'm Living in Shame"! They certainly pushed Diana Ross while almost ignoring her and Mary. Those two girls were so beautiful.
I don't Cindy looked so much bored as she dared not steal the spotlight from Miss Ross, so she was trying to look as inconspicuous as possible. Also how could she be bored singing on national TV, wearing expensive drop dead gorgeous gowns, expensive diamond earrings, a glamorous hairdo, singing in front of three cameras that are broadcasting to the nation, a huge Hollywood Palace live audience and a member of the top female group. If she was bored with all of this I'll eat my hat. Or maybe she just wanted to pick up her paycheck for this gig and get the hell of there.
Why doesn't Mary and Cindy have mikes?
Darious Wilder. 3:29 Diana hold her mike as far away from her as possible but we still hear Mary loud and clear (hardly prerecorded) which might idicate a boom microphone, but if so, why would Diana need a mike?
Because their voices were so angelic that they didn't need mics. You Know when I watched that 100 years ago I never noticed that. lol , I'm being funny but it really has been 50 years right, crazy ....many people who were in the house with me that night the show aired are now dead. wow that's crazy! My Aunt Tilly came over that night to see colored girls on our new Magnavox home theater system in color, she was in her late 80's at that time. You know that long ass TV with the stereo that was all the rage at that time with that clicker remote that didn't work half the time. lol Took me forever to pay for that TV, I need to check to see if I still owe on it, lol! Great memories!
I went to the Hollywood Palace taping twice. There were overhead mics all over the place that cannot be seen on camera. In those days, overhead mics were very common on TV shows.
Cindy looks so hot
Yes, I think that is the hairdo that is most becoming for Miss Birdsong.
You can really see Diana's lazy left eye in this clip.
LOL....TheReturnOfBigBear, Psycho is because of what Psycho does!
THE SUPREMES 1970/72 without the "FULL MOTOWN MARKETING, PUBLICITY & DISTRIBUTION" that was assigned undivided to Diane Ross who was barely staying afloat did SUPREMELY!
As it became clear to newcomer and multitalented Jean Terrell that the days were numbered she left not only THE SUPREMES but Motown for A&M Records!
@SpazChat Diane was wildly "loose" and opened wide for Berry! Broke her Mama's heart!
Sure....If given the opportunity....I wonder if the others would have done any different.....lol. Yeah right.
@SpazChat --FYI--Diane Ross "BACKSTABBED" her way to stardom!
MS. MARY WILSON TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO LAS VEGAS!

@etrax2000 Regarding Diane's first release?
Did you mean, "DOOBEDDOD'NDOOBE, DOOBEDOOD'NDOOBE,DOOBEDOOD'NDOO" from the "failure to launch" album "Everything Is Everything"? Because that album and the next "Surrender" were FLOPS!!!!!
@TWTR4EVER: If we have to determine if a product by what "Billboard" calls a hit, you lose your perspective.
You can like a song, whether it's number one or not.
In my opinion "Surrender" (1971) was a wonderful album, an extended version of "Reach Out, I'll Be There" was simply wonderful, "All The Befores" by Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashford is the bomb. I bought this album when I graduated from high school in 1971!
Forget the charts...it was a most wonderful album!
You hear the polish of a Diana Ross after ten years.
True Motown fans enjoy the songs, no matter how they chart.
The songwriting on the album "Surrender" was top notch.
Three young girls in an exciting time in their lives. I can assure you...They all wanted the spotlight. I can bet if Flo was given lead, she would have had no problem. Same with Mary. Bottom line. Neither of them had the final word. Lets get real. Music is business. You people act as if Diana was the boss in those days. She merely did what she was supposed to do and asked to do and kept her eye on the prize like any smart woman would do.
Did anyone notice at all that the second verse of "livin in shame" was totally missed?!?! You know....the one that goes "in a college town, away from home a new identity I found". I wonder if it was Miss Ross who screwed up, or maybe they were just trying to "cut it short" due to time constraints. In any case, Mary and Cindy just went along and made it all look smooth and professional. Only someone who knows the song well would notice. All in all, an enjoyable performance from DMC
Mary Wilson?
Which one of the Background Props is she?
Martha Marvelette the one with the big hair...the other with the long hair is Cindy Birdsong
Oh, The Slutty looking one!
Martha Marvelette How does a woman wearing the same dress as the others look slutty? Unless you yourself just feels Mary was slutty.
She has that Hungry Horny look in her eyes, like Bristol Palin
hahaha couldn't help but find that funny...still leave mary alone..not feeling that wig tho
Why wouldn't they let the other girls talk!!!
orders from Berry Gordy.
