Okay. Now, when it comes to potty training your parrot, the thing you need to realize is that birds are wild animals. They're going to poop every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the species. So, the first thing you got to do is get out of your mind that you're going to have a perfect potty train that'll never poop on anything. Because no matter how good of a job you do, accidents will still happen.
So, stock up on good cleaning supplies: a wetvac, a mop, anything you can use to clean your parrots nest is good. The less of a big deal you make about the parrot making a mess, the less you're going to encourage any of that type of behavior.
Another strategy is to keep the parrot on parrot-approved places, like this tree right here. The bottom is made to be easy to clean. So, if the parrots spent a lot of their time on parrot places instead of on human furniture, you're less likely to have a mess throughout your house. Part of the strategy for keeping your parent on parrot-approved places is to do a lot of training, like the tricks we've been going over.
If you teach your parrots tricks on their training arches and trees, they're more familiar with spending time on those places and their more likely to go over to them when they're out and about. Now, when it comes to actually the potty training process, you can't really do it the same way that you teach normal tricks such as clicking and giving a treat. That's known to make parrots hold it in for too long and that can actually hurt their digestive system.
So, instead, it's important to encourage the parrot to poop on it's designated places but not mandate it. So, the strategy is to realize how long between poops that your bird goes. If you realize that you have a small bird and it goes every five minutes, that's going to be the number you go for. The bigger bird might be half an hour. But these guys, maybe about 15 minutes.
So, what Im going to do, when I want to just spend time with my bird, I want to have him on my shoulder, on me, I will hold them and make sure that I'm not spending more than the allotted time between when they go to do their business. So, I might pick up the bird and hold it for ten minutes. Knowing that they're going to poop in 15. Play with them, do whatever I want to do with my pet.
Then, I'm going to go and put them back down on their stand after ten minutes elapses. Now, I'm going to wait five minutes until they finally take their poop, whatever that comes out to. And as soon as they do, I'm going to make a big deal. Be like "Wow, that was very good! That's great!" And I'll come back over and pick up the bird and spend more time with it again.
And then ten minutes goes by. I feel like a next poop is due. Before it can happen, I'll put her back down on the perch and wait until she does it. After you do this for a couple weeks or months, your parrot will catch on that the sooner they do their business when they're put down, the sooner you'll pick them up and keep spending time with them.
So, they learn to naturally do more of they're business around their perches instead of on you or on unapproved human furniture areas. If your parrot wings aren't clip and they're flighted, they can even learn to fly back to they're stand when they need to go, which is really convenient if you lose track of timing. If they're familiar and accustomed to pooping on their stand, they'll fly over when they need to go.
The last thing you can do to encourage your parrot do it's business on it's poopy perch is when you take it out first thing in the morning, put it down on it's perch and wait until it's goes. Most parrots hold it in at night and they have to go really bad in the morning and they try to avoid going in their cages.
So, as soon as you take them out, put them right down on their poopy perch and let them go. And after they're done, you can pick them up and do your normal routine with them. This way, they learn to go to that designated place and to hold it in until you put them down and it's time to do it. So, that's some tips for you about potty training your parrot.

I am using this technique with my cockatiel and it works! There are occasional accidents, but not very often. I put him on his stand about every 15-20 minutes and as soon as he is done (usually pretty much right away), he comes to the edge of the stand and reaches for me as if to say, "Okay mommy, I'm done! Time to play!" Then it's off to having fun for another 15-20 minutes. Sometimes he even stops playing himself and looks toward the stand as if he is saying "I gotta go!" when it is time.

My Quaker Doby knew how to poop on command... I just learned to recognize his body language when he needed to go, and every time he did I'd hold him over whatever was convenient for him to poop into or on (usually an empty fast food bag) and after he went I'd say "Go poop" followed by "Good bird". He eventually got to the point where if I held him out on my finger and said "Go poop", he'd poop. This was especially convenient since he couldn't stand on a perch (he was an old bird, and with a crippled foot to boot) and spent all day on my shoulder or my chest... it saved me a lot of time cleaning shirts.

That’s VERY unhealthy and ALL vets says to NOT do it, don’t train your birds to poop on command, even the guy said it on the video, it can lead to them holding it for too long until you allow them to go, and cause digestive problems for them. What’s convenient for you may not be safe, kind or recommended for them. Put their needs first, not your convenience.

My husband taught our green-cheek conure how to poop in her cage and she was well-trained her entire life. It's about timing in the beginning. Put the bird in its cage, wait, and then praise the bird and take it immediately back out again. You have to do this over and over at first, but then, as the person in this video says, the bird will make the connection. In fact, at one point, our bird would actually "fake" a poop if we had to put her back in her cage unexpectedly, so that she could come out. Very funny. She also had a special "urgent-sounding" peep that she would use if we lost track of time. Frankly, we found that she would still hold it if we slipped up until she got back on her cage perch.

They haven't catched on completely but I'm trying to get them to poop on wipes or in the toilet. Like, my dad's bird voluntarily flew down and pooped in the toilet before flying back to my dad. We didn't have to place him down on the toilet or anything. But he's only done that the once. I think it helps to take them in to the toilet with you so they understand that's that where you go so they should go.

Awesome! Worked great for me - my Blue-Crowned Conure picked this up (almost) in a day - I just set a timer, first at 12 minutes, and slowly worked up until it seemed right at about 20 minutes (i.e. I get a decent poop). My family laughs, because she wants to be with me so badly, she will make every effort to poop to get back to me - you can see her trying to squeeze one out. How sweet, huh? LOL As long as I put her on a poop perch (one of 4 I have), I am poop-free.
My only question: this has not *prevented* her from pooping on my shoulder if I forget - any suggestions on how to curtail that? I have tried using time-outs (e.g. putting her back on her poop perch for a while, or cage), but it doesn't seem to be helping.

I really like your method over other methods like trying to get the bird to poop on command. This encourages the bird to poop at designated spot, but at their own timing. I find it a bit cruel to have to force a bird to poop on command. What if it accidentally just ate too much…

Pet birds always have food and water available, Humans eat three times everyday and birds don't have a system, they just eat when they are hungry. Also I don't know where the different types of organs go or how bird's digestive system works, but the birds body must be much different than a humans, so they must digest quicker.

I never trained my bird. I had him for a few months before he trained me. We could be playing nice and he would start chewing my ear. At first I was frustrated and I would put him back in his cage as a way to teach him not to chew. Then I noticed he would dump and his wings would do that 'I want out' flappy thing. So, he trained me. Doesn't work with the local wild birds though. When standing under a tree and looking up, keep your mouth closed.

My bird is a lovebird. He squats on the floor, and then I start to panic. I try to transfer him to the plain floor. (Easier to clean) mostly he poops in midair. But at least it’s not on my carpet.

how easy is it too teach them to go to their place to potty? if you get them out and lose track of time, and they need to go... so they just go to their place and potty? I know it's a slow process, but is that a reliable method?

I would like to get a cockatiel at some point, and this seems to work if you're with them most of the time, but what if i leave my house for a couple hours? If i put the bird in its cage when i leave, will it use the restroom on its own or will it just hold it in until i get back? If so that doesnt seem healthy. If i am there and i tell the bird to potty, but he doesn't, and i set him down on a perch or on/in his cage and leave him alone, will it use the restroom on/in its cage if i dont give it a command? Or will it just poop wherever it feels like it if i'm not constantly telling it to go potty every 15 minutes? if not that seems like a lot of work, like i would have to babysit it all the time. How do you get any work/housework done if you have to come running to let the bird out every 15 minutes?
