Summary: Greg attempts to help Steven by taking him on a road trip to help him figure what he wants out of life. But it only worsen matters when Steven learns more about Greg's childhood and how he gained his surname.

Summary: With Steven's condition worsening as he believes these recent events are tied to his powers as a Diamond fully manifesting, he runs away from home and turns to Jasper for help in taking control of himself. But Jasper's training methods proved to be too effective with disastrous results during her rematch with Steven.

Steven just realized his father is a overgrown man child who cost him a childhood and a family.
@@Crescentknight8189 ...and, had that happened. he would have died at age 14 when the Cluster detonated, but Steven's not thinking rationally right now. Had Greg taken him to a doctor or put him in school, the authorities might have stepped in. At the very least, Steven would have been even MORE unprepared than he is now, and the scene would have been him attacking Greg for having him live a lie. It doesn't excuse Greg or make him flawless, but it shows how Steven's not thinking things through. THAT is the real problem with Greg's parenting, and comes from his irresponsibility.

What scares/worries me is the fact that Jasper knew she had been shattered. Like, yes gems know when they get poofed but the fact they know or experience being shattered, not just cracked is scary
Gems never TRULY die. Being shattered is far worse than death, just look at the Cluster, it only wants to be whole again, which is literally impossible. Jasper just got lucky that Steven found all her shards, otherwise she'd be gone, FOREVER.
Well, just think of the gem shard experiments and the cluster. Shards are still conscious, but they're not WHOLE. They're pieces of a broken mind. It's really frickin horrifying....

The thing is he did need to release that emotion that anger with Jasper because exercise can help you better yourself. The thing is as with every single thing right now he TAKES IT TOO FAR.

He keeps taking things to an extreme. Their needs to be moderation.
Also yes the Gems are holding him back HEAVILY. At the same time Steven needs a middle ground. Not too held back not to let loose. Just a middle.
I think he needs to experience the sorrow, the anger, the fear, and every other dark emotion because he keeps bottling them up. Jasper did have the right idea but she wasn't fully aware of exactly the years of trauma he has.

Jasper's level of training was too intense, and I assume she thought it would help him to channel it exactly like she does. Which has a nice allusion for how people who know people with depression try to give them tricks or answers to how to make them 'happy' again. Like how Greg thought he just needed ice cream and to praise him to try to make him feel better or with this and Jasper suggesting training the power and his anger on the same level as her.

I never understood the superpowered person wanting a normal life cliche but Steven really showed why

@@darthestar8791 I am a fan of SU since gem glow first aired on CN and I have seen shows where characters regret having powers to face problems but the shows would sometimes not give serious danger, solid reasons, or lasting effects as to why having those powers are bad for the character but SU has made that point clear as to why Steven wants to be "normal" or have a normal life
@@lorettabes4553 That like saying I wish i didn't have chickenpox as a baby (which ultimately caused my Hard of hearing/deafness) But I don't think, I would be the person i am right now if I wasn't impacted by deafness alongside everything i been through. I wouldn't have this 15 years+ longtime bestfriend-ship with a girl i known since i was a kid back in primary school who also has a similar deafness to me (not counting the traumatic experience i had that make me stay a year behind, prior to ending up in the same class/year as her.)
Just a reminder....this series’ first episode was about Steven thinking his powers were activated by eating ice cream...and now he’s canonically responsible for a murder....WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED?!?!

He’s going to the wrong places to settle his problems. This made me appreciate the show even more. That everything before all this has severe consequences and the gradual downfall of Steven is impeccable character development. He’s pushing everyone away and dismissing what he really wants from people because he doesn’t wanna be a burden. All real life symptoms revolving depression, anxiety and trauma. My respect for this show went through the roof

I mean, he literally was the jesus-kun character as a kid. He saw himself as his friend's problem solver, but now, everyone has their shit together. The literal fact that he spent so much time looking out for others, that he didn't look out for himself. All of these problems have been literally joked about by the community. Steven basically lost himself by helping others find themselves, to the point that he seems to feel that he's been discarded by everyone he cared about because they don't have oceans of baggage that steven can fix. Honestly, he needs a hug and a therapist. I mean, connie's mom was probably the first to notice how fucked steven's life has become

I turned to the channel before the episode ended; when I saw Steven using the Diamonds' healing potion and crying in the bathroom, I was curious of what's happening. The moment I saw Jasper appeared and said, "You shattered me.", I spat my tea on the floor in shock!!😮😨😱

Am I the only one who thought about the episode "Why So Blue" throughout Steven's training? About how Lapis says that 'Restrain takes strength' and how 'That show of power was weakness' or something along those lines?

Cylexa she asked for it, and was provoking him, so it’s clearly different than killing a gem intentionally
@@SoulHero7 Pink was a diamond. First off, I'm sure Diamonds sentenced gems to shattering regularly. And also in the war she waged against her self there way too many casualties for you to say Pink never crossed that line.
@@MM31-TheCatOfHatred AntonioM31 Jasper definitely took a more straight-forward approach when getting steven to not hold back. I just thought about the similarities of the situation (mostly because I wasn't really sure about the relevance of Lapis's episode until now)
Jasper drove Steven to his breaking point in almost the same way the two other Lapis(es) did to our Lapis. The only difference was that there was no one holding back Steven.
One other thing: Lapis and Steven both gained the respect of their opponents after dominating them in a fight.
The two Lapis agreed to do whatever our Lapis says after her 'display of power' and Jasper bowed down to her diamond.
(Also I never said Steven shattered Jasper on purpose, he did bring her back after he realized what he's done)

Even while highly problematic and toxic for Steven she was straight up comedy gold in this episode.
I feel like Greg's parents feel like Greg died to them after he left. Steven is right. Greg is just like Pink.
If we remember the talk he had with Sadie: His parents never went to his shows and thought he was throwing his life away with music. Now here, he says that music was off limits. All Pink wanted was a colony and they gave it to her. Once she realized she wanted the planet alive they refused to listen. Yellow and Blue would often put Pink in the tower for doing things that were "off-limits" as well.
I get the feeling that his parents left his room how it was because THAT is the child they accepted. Just as how Pink's room and court was still there in Homeworld when Steven returned.
I think both the Diamonds and the Demayos feel its their fault Pink/Greg fled but at least the Diamonds tried to mend things with Steven. I don't even know if the Demayos even know Steven exists.
They left Greg's letters unopened because if you notice, he started addressing them as Greg Universe.

I'm also on the side of Steven losing himself to his own powers. Jasper was right about the need to channel his emotions, but she was wrong about how Steven should go about it.

Fragments aside I like what Mr. Universe shows that Greg ISN'T this perfect father that we all make him out to be which does wonders for his character in being very complex. It's quite clear that despite all the freedom he has been giving Steven he is unknowingly doing exactly what Pink did, projecting what they couldn't be.
Steven doesn't want to be this Gem Messiah after he cleaned his mother's messes and be in her shadow 24/7, nor does he want to be this rebel, exploring the world and carving his own path. There's a sweet in-between that Steven wants, he doesn't want everything laid out before him but he wants direction. And in a crazy but much smaller scale coincidence Greg is subconsciously trying to place on Steven what HE couldn't be just like PD.
At the end of the day Greg is human and though a damn good one has made mistakes, and one of his biggest is as a parent, he's less "father" and more "the best friend that you can ask for" and no matter how much we wish it were the latter is not what we need, what we need is the former.
Well said. People are actually upset that Greg isn't a perfect father. Of course he was a rebel! Pink was the same way! This is one of the reasons they got along so well!
I fully agree! It is lawful for a father to want his son to follow his dreams and take charge of his own life. But it was not in that healthy sense that Steven had his life experience. Greg's rebellion made it impossible for Steven to grow up in a solid and safe home. It is understandable that Steven is frustrated by not having a normal life; in a house with your father, going to school and having aspirations like a normal child. In my life I have experienced exactly what Steven experiences in relation to his parents. And I can say that since the beginning of the show I never considered Greg to be a great father. And I'm happy that this episode brings out the consequences of this for Steven.
Yeah, but no matter how you look at it, even though it badly backfired on the long run, Steven had the best life out of the three options.
True, he could've went to school, true, he could've went to a doctor, and true, he could've met his grandparents, but look at what it could have caused ! Just imagine all the things that would happen if Steven went to school ! One accidental bubble shield and he'll be the hybrid freak of the class, being kinda needy for recognition and attention from others in his youth, he'll forcefully get bullied a lot, and when it will happen, the gems will be spitting fire at Greg's face to have him removed, saying that they can educate him themselves, worse scenario, either they'll go as far as kidnapping Steven amd raise him far away, even on another planet, or some special agency will definitely find out about him and kidnap him to discover how he work.
For the hospital ? Steven never get badly sick or injured enough to ever need a doctor at all, he literally has healing powers ! If you're talking about a psychologist, yes he do, but for his physical health ? Apparently not, plus, being half gem, an unaware doctor would be more than curious and would call up to some things way more troublesome, probably even the government, so as far as I'm concerned, that's a good play on Greg.
His grandparents ? We all learned how strict they were, fixated on their agenda like a clock, anything out of the ordinary was a no go for them, even something as simple as music, you're telling me that they would have been okay with their son going a few towns away for years and years, only to come back, with a baby he had with an alien and not even married ? Yeah, right, one glow from his gem and they'll take out their old shotgun, and the Gems would never had been okay with leaving Steven growing up on his own there, since at the time, to them, he was still Rose Quartz trapped in a fleshy bubble, imagine how it would have worked out with the parents ? Because I can easily imagine a flaming house and some gem shards lying around in the backyard.
So yeah, Greg is obviously NOT earning the greatest Dad of the universe trophy when it comes to raising a child, and him pushing his belief of the ideal raising method on Steven was not good, but considering Steven's special conditions and the little time he had spend with him, since Steven was mostly raised by the Gems, I think that he did a pretty decent job as a father !
*Oh, and let's not forget about the Cluster issues of Steven had lived a "Normal life".*

The whole point is that he wants normal human problems and hates his current situation and everything that comes from being part Gem because the problems that come from that are magnitudes worse than normal human stuff.
He's angry and resentful because of the mess his life is becoming and his mounting psychological problems and he wants to be a normal person without those problems.
I watched these earlier and I knew when full on tears happened i was like "These episodes are going to send Zamber on an emotional rollercoaster."

He dumped all of the essence from white, blue, and yellow in the tub to fix Japser. He has none of that to fix corruption or shattered gems at the moment until he gets more
I think Steven only feels angry about the stuff his dad "ran away from" because to him, while it was a possibly abusive life; it was a "normal" human one.
The Demayoes didn't have to worry about invasions, training for war or supernatural powers; things Steven feels as though he was "wrongfully denied of"

I almost had an anxiety Attack when they showed us Jasper's fragments. Literally. I felt so bad... I usually have these kind of moments with experiences I go through in real life, but I've never experienced such a thing watching a cartoon or movie.

I had the exact same reaction when Harry used Sectum Sempera on Malfoy in HP book 6

The thing that probably went unnoticed is that given the first thing of confirmation this was his parents house was unopen enveloped addressed by greg to his parents.
Although I can agree they cared about them, I feel there was level of neglect and likely extremely restrictive. Although there is possiblity that they were unaware they were doing it or were trying raise him what they thought was right, it likely cause of his parents that he's so much into giving steven freedom... that it is unintentionally backfiring in this situation. Also trying do his best as parent despite being completely unprepared. Steven is slowly feeling more and more disconnection and lashing out more and more as hides his feeling.
It also sort of scary to think about that given despite helping worsen steven's attitude that it likely this was legit the only way to get through to Jasper and properly redeem her... although it did NOT help steven at all. Since for Jasper to ever accept steven it HAD to be true defeat in combat. Despite Steven attempt reasoning will never work, Jasper life started in a war.
Also the first true 'on-screen' current event shattering is of Jasper BY Steven, even if he had the fortune of having all the pieces and the required stuff to heal it...which confirms it possible but doesn't make shattering any less 'DEATH' to the gems. Cause it does require all 4 diamonds and seems no less extremely difficult.
Also although my reaction was tame comparedly, these two episodes made me go wide eyed several times.
Danith Rabbit One thing someone brought up that I agree was enlightening was how Greg told Steven at the end of the episode he never had the guts to tell his dad off like Steven did. I’m guessing there was a lot of poor communication coming from all parties. It’s very likely Greg’s parents never knew how he felt, and only saw him leave without ever knowing how he felt. And after Greg left, they were possibly too hurt or confused to want to open the letters.

Personally, and in many legitimate ways, the killing and various war crimes are lesser evils to the emotional manipulation and intentional abandonment of close confidants. Death is cheap, mental scares run deep.

And the wierd part is... I can't blame her. She was born in a war, forced to fight from her first breath. Strength allowed her to survive and be respected. So seeing her aknowledge Steven due to his strength is normal for her. There's no malice behind it. How broken inside must she be to sworn alliegance to the one know shattered her. I feel bad for Steven and Jasper
Is no one gonna talk about how Steven changed back to his normal SUF look after shattering Jasper? That was fricking scary how after all of this training and gaining control of his powers (albeit in use of anger), Steven shattering Jasper reset all of that. He's probably in an even worse place now!

Just finished watching these episodes. I am *dreading* the finale. Steven has officially murdered a Gem. He is dang lucky that he could bring her back. And he is just... not doing anything in moderation. The boy needs help, and the one person who offered a healthy alternative is being pushed away. Like... It's going to be rough.

I feel like Greg wants Steven to live the life he never could have, free to do whatever he wanted. However, Steven didn’t want that. Steven was able to grow in this free environment but due to the stress of gem life he didn’t get a truly FREE life, so he just sees it as “I had to deal with stress from my moms side and my dad never gave me a normal childhood”. Not, “my dad is trying his hardest to give me the life he wanted” I do think it’s unhealthy for Greg to be projecting what he wanted upon Steven because Steven feels clearly the opposite of Greg where he does want a strict environment where people worry or I guess somehow “care” for him in the strict environment. Steven realizes Greg does care for him, just not in the way that Steven wants.

When he got rejuvenated, his power reverted to that of a baby Steven.
I didn’t realize how similar Rose was to Greg until now. They both recognized how overbearing and unintentionally abusive (clearly at different degrees) their parents were. Even though they made plenty of big risks and have regrets about some past decisions, all they wanted to do was what was best for Steven. They just wanted to be better parents.
I do love how Rebecca is in a way setting a new standard for kids/teen shows like there’s so many lessons to learn and unpack in each of these episodes and i definitely see how they could help a ton of kids with different backgrounds

I love what the crewniverse did with the music when it is revealed that Steven shattered Jasper. Nothing, just the normal background noises, no other sound to emphasize the fact that he committed the unspeakable. It's just a fact.

As we can see, with each episode of Steven Universe Future, Steven’s mental health is slowly deteriorating and, believe me or not, but I’m on the majority that believe that Steven will get corrupted and become the worm monster in the intro. Garnet once stated in Monster Reunion, “It’s instead if, MC Bear Bear didn’t tear the fabric of his arm, but the fabric of his mind.” This proposes that corruption is mental rather than physical. Steven’s mind is taking all the hits in this series and it’s gonna get worse and worse until eventually, somehow, Steven will get corrupted. And as we saw in Fragments, Steven had developed the Diamond eyes, and you know who else has those eyes: the worm monster. And this monster has more of a human-like face than most of the corrupted gems in the show. Believe me or not, he could quite possibly get corrupted.
The thing with Steven Universe Future is like Connie's mom said. Steven has issues that are resolved but it's the lasting trauma that leaves the deepest effects on him
