GARMIN EDGE 1040 SOLAR : TESTING THE 45 HOUR BATTERY LIFE CLAIM

  • The newest Garmin Edge Bike head unit is a clever and sophisticated pice of kit, but the more it can do, the more the battery is challenged.
    One of the biggest attractions is the claimed huge battery life, but can this be achieved without switching off most of the power hungry features that attracted you to the unit in the first place ?
    In the Summer I used the unit without charging it until it was depleted and this video shows how that went.

    Thanks for that, very useful explanation. I just got one and am trying to get my head around how this works. Certainly uses a lot less charge than my 1030.

    This is the only review I've seen of someone actually testing the real battery runtime in real world situations and not just repeating Garmin's claim. Nice work, and thanks for the information! I'm in the same boat as @lukedandy5542 w/my 520+ running out of juice after about 4-1/2 hours with only a heart rate, cadence, and Varia sensor attached and backlight at 0%, so I'm looking for a new Garmin with much better battery capacity so I can take full advantage of all the sensors + phone attached, live-tracking, messaging/notifications enabled, the most accurate GPS mode, user-friendly navigation, etc. and not have to worry about battery life for multi-day century rides or longer for many years of use.

      Thank you for your kind comments - if you haven't seen it already, I posted a full review of the 1040 a few days ago 👍

    Very informative video. My Edge 520 ran out of charge after 5 hours, so I'm going to replace it with the 1040 Solar. I'll not need to use it for 48 hours of riding without charging, but it's nice to know that it can do it if needed. Good video, nice work!

      Very kind of you Luke. If I was buying again I'd probably go for the Non Solar 1040. Still crazy long battery lif, slightly brighter screen apparently and cheaper. Less storage but thats not usually an issue and in the UK the benefit of extra time via solar charging isn't so big

    Excellent reporting on the battery performance. I’m on the fence between solar and non-solar.

      Depends on where you live I think as long as you don't need the larger storage of the Solar. Personally if I bought new again I'd choose non solar to save some cash and I'm told battery life is still streets ahead of anything that came before and the screen is slightly brighter.

    also turning it on and off may use more battery.

    840 or 1040 ??

    • @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike
      @OrdinaryBlokeOnABike  Před rokem +1

      As far as I know the new 840 has the same features so any decision would involve better battery life and bigger screen on the 1040

      @@OrdinaryBlokeOnABike 100% correct. It's a little big but yes makes sense.
