You haven't been to Nias island in north Sumatra, raja Ampat island in Papua. Those are better than Bali beach. Perhaps you should go to west Sumatra Capitol. There is a Malin Kundang boat. Made from stone. N the Malin Kundang is too. There is legendary in west Sumatra about Malin Kundang. He was a son who cursed by his mother because he did something very very big wrong to his mother. In Indonesia we call anak durhaka. He slaped his mother. He pushed n throwed his mother n he did not commited his mother. His mother was upset n cursed him became a stone. Malin Kundang, the boat, n the traisure turn becamed a stone. You should go there

Actually it's not only in Jakarta, nowadays many big cities such as Surabaya, Jogja, Bandung, Semarang etc are doing Car Free Day too.. But, Jakarta is the pioneer

Cuman waktu itu jaraknya pendek hanya dari bundaran HI ke MONAS sekarang dampai BUNDARAN TUGA PEMUDA.
Juga masih ada bis PPD, kopaja, metromini yg boleh lewat, waktu tahun 80an.

The bad : Traffic, air pollution, heat, crowded
The good : the people, relatively cheap, the food, atmosphere (subjective though), relatively safe (do watch out for pickpockets and bad areas but most of the time you should be safe), car free day 🐱.

Guys, there’s this thing called the spoon which would make a better vessel for your gado-gado and soto. It’s painful to see how all the different ingredients kept on falling off your fork 😁
There’s a huge variety of soto in different Indonesian cities, you’ve probably left Jakarta but the city’s specialty is Soto Betawi which is creamier thanks to the addition of milk/coconut milk. But the golden tinged East Java-style Soto that you have is the most popular one, it is the one brought over by the Javanese when they migrated to Malaysia and Singapore.

There’s another version of Indonesian salad, it’s Karedok, it’s just like gado-gado but all of the veggies are fresh and not boiled. It’s so good. And we also have Urap, another Indo salad, instead of a sauce, we use grated coconut. And btw.. we eat soto with spoon and rice, the broth is the key of Soto, it’s always been my comfort food 🥹 we stir fry all of the spices first before boiling it into broth. Just a lil fun fact hehe. I recently visited and was impressed. Makati in the Philippines, which I also visited recently, has started to do something similar. I wish all the big cities in the world would follow suit. You can really tell the stark difference in noise and fumes.

Depends on the city come from.
Such as:
-soto ayam Lamongan (from Lamongan).
- soto ayam betawi (from Batavia/ Jakarta)
- soto ayam Bandung (from Bandung)
-soto ayam madura (from madura island).
- soto Bali
-soto Makassar
And so forth..

Nowadays, some cities in Indonesia have car free day too, you check them on google. Here we have many kinds of soto depending on the regions where they come and the ingredients in the soto, such as Soto Lamongan, Soto Babat, Soto Mie Bogor, etc. And we also have different kinds of salad with peanut sauce, namely pecel, ketoprak, lotek, etc. Love to see you both happy, anyway people know Bali, but only few know about Sabang and some beautiful beaches in Sumatra island

12:38 Indonesian ppl especially who live in Java, we are obsessed with peanut sauce 😂 some delicasy with peanut sauce such as Gado-gado, Sate Ayam, Siomay Bandung, Rujak (fruit salad), Ketoprak, Lotek, Tahu Telur (East Javanese dish), Tahu Gimbal, Nasi Pecel, Batagor, Asinan Betawi, Karedok and etc 😊

Mostly There two kinds of crispy things:
Kerupuk: and there are hundreds kinds of kerupuk (some just tapioca flour, some use shrimp, fish, or even cow skin/pig skin, so ask first). Can be of any color or just plain white.
Emping : this is made from Melinjo seeds/fruit. Tastes bitter, but some sell it with added chili sauce or sweet sauce. If you try "Sayur Asam" while in Jakarta, you can find small fruits that we call Melinjo, and when the fruit is smashed and dried it turn into emping. It's light yellow.
There's also things called keripik (usually uses fruits like banana, apple, etc), opak (this one made out of rice), and others I forget. But the ones that are often used in food like you eat are either Kerupuk or Emping.
If you go to market, you usually will find uncooked Kerupuk or Emping (ready to eat Emping usually sold with added chili/sweet sauce). You need to fry it with hot oil but only for seconds. You can see them immediately expand when dropped into hot oil, once they reach maximum size, immediately pick them up from the pan and drain the excess oil. Don't let them soak too long. I hope you understand my English.
