  • The operating coal load out on our layout is now up and running. It works, but we still have to get it painted! Thanks for watching and comment below to let me know what you think!
P.S. We are using Woodland Scenics Coarse black ballast.

This is really Awesome! will make model railroading allot more realistic and fun. Enjoy all the times you can doing this with your Dad. I use to work on a layout with my father, then I got away from it and he and I stopped altogether. saying we would get back to it sometime. how ever my Father recently passed away. and I really regret stopping, and wish I could work on a layout with him again, but sadly that will never be. So please spend all the time you can with your Father, and treasure every moment.

The cable name you are referring to in the video was sometimes called a choke cable. Some modelers used them to also activate switches as well. The name derives from the fact that way back "In the day" when I was young, cars would have carburetors with a manual choke knob on the dashboard. When cold starting, the cable would be pulled out, then pushed back in when the engine warmed up.

FANTASTIC, was thinking about that myself. Very good. Now the next part is coal cars that empty like their real counterparts. I'm figuring that out also. The opperating units will work for coal, sand, gravel, on my layout. Coal loaded at the mine, and emptied at the powerplant, Gravel loaded at the pit, and emptied at the delivery yard, sand, the same way. Working models for interesting actions on the layout. Thanks for the idea here.

That is cool! All you need now is a coal rotary railcar dumper to dump the coal out of the coal car on to a conveyor belt that will send the coal back up to the coal loader. : )
If I make a coal loader like this one I will probably just scratch build the whole thing out of wood and use a RC Servo to open and close the hopper.
