@@noahbriske839 That makes zero sense.
@@cander9777I can have copies of a Lego set worth 100k that just went up 30% in a year but that doesn’t mean I could ever find enough buyers to buy it at the market price. Price is effective by demand, liquidity, and many other factors.

@@noloveforthehaters Yes it does, value is determined by buyers not sellers. Sellers can say this item they have 5000 copies of is worth 500 dollars each but if they can't even sell 2000 copies in a year at 500 let alone 1000 its not actually worth 500 because the price would drop looking for new buyers. Stay the course 🤦♂️ you’d be an idiot to sell before 2022
You invested incorrectly...
Cardrushinc actually invested right. You should have invested in Booster Boxes. The booster boxes for Black & White are all double in price now or 4 times the original price. Everything after black and white is 3-10 times the original price. The boxes you got are literally for little kids. Lol
This is pretty correct. Aside from things like Pokemon Generations Special edition and such. I believe Shining Legends product will go up in about 2 years.
And Black and White sets were printed way less than the sets after them like Break Through, Break Point, Steam Siege, Ancient Origins, etc...so the high prices of Black and White reflect the smaller supply. Your comment doesn't make much sense either.
Probably meant to say "before" instead of "after"
I meant BEFORE. Sun and moon is still a great investment just look at Ultra prism.

Just buy booster boxes. You can’t lose. They never drop under a certain value, no matter the set. Even if you don’t make money, you won’t lose either. Simple.

Gotta be a massive idiot to invest so heavily in something you know nothing about.
Why did you continue to buy into new product, after what happened with the XY Evolutions set's massive print numbers? Especially after seeing what Wizards was doing with their print runs. You had the right game to buy into, but should've shifted focus at literally any 1st edition English WOTC boxes. Pokemon Go brought a huge part of the original fan base back into the game who wanted to collect the cards they had when they were a kid.
Ian McDaries exactly a 75k investment in a 1st edition box would double in 5 years. That much on modern wont
A few years later and xy evo went as hight as 1200 dollars per booster, up to 30 dollars for a single pack! Crazy how time changes things!
@@strongerbeings4982 Oh right! this is a nice time capsule comment for myself to come back to for sure!
That's because you invested on the wrong products.
Buying into scarce promos like Fan Club Porygon, Masaki Gengars, or scarce cards like no-rarity base set holos. was the right move. Prices on these cards exploded in 2018, especially for NM.

I play pokemon competitively, those ex boxes are such a waste of money. NOBODY buys them besides the 10 year old kids with their moms, unless there's a specific promo in the box that's hot in standard at the moment, but even then it's not a good investment.
+Jay Kenley it's a fun strategic game? and also a franchise both old and appealing enough that there are people with their own kids still enjoying it just as much, if not more, than they did when they first got into it? I'm 25 years old, going to a Lost Thunder pre-release tomorrow at my local Pokémon League, and so far, I've only seen two younger children playing Pokémon at that store, one of them the younger brother of another player. Everyone else is at least in their late teens.
Valtharr Nerds 🤓
Collectors buy those box as well...
@Jay Kenley Pokemon appeals to all ages. It has so much media and it can appeal to a variety. I grew up with Pokemon and loved it ever since. It's definitely something that takes me out of a dark rut or depressive episode.
Jay Kenley for most people who play the game all they care about is the packs. Thoes boxes have only about 3-5 packs but still cost 15-25$ this makes the packs about 4-5$ each. Instead most people buy booster boxes for an average of about 100$ or so a box and it comes with 36 packs. This makes a pack about2-3$ the fore way better deal.
You know why I love PLAYING Pokemon? Because the Pokemon Company knows what plays and they actually PRINT IT! I feel like they realized that pro players running 4 Shaymin EX in every deck and it was printed only in Roaring Skies, driving the cost up to like $75 each really priced a lot of potential new players out of the game (that's why people were paying so much for Roaring Skies boxes). They want to create appeal to new PLAYERS because PLAYERS keep a game alive.
Tapu Lele GX, the one pokemon in current standard that is run in every meta deck, is getting a promo reprint! Cost of that card is down to like $30. Right now, it's a GOOD time to be a Pokemon player. It's not a game for investors. There's no reserved list, no premium collector's buy-a-box promos, or any of that crap. It's for the players.

Watching this in 2022.
those were the good ole days, when you had 200 Dragonite ex boxes stacked
I don’t feel like 2 years is enough time to allow pokemon to appreciate in value. Another 2 i think it will be a different story. Similar to flashfire which is worth £6/$8 a pack now. If you were loosing 15% on a box would cracking the packs not turn a profit? I bought and cracked Generations boxes 12 months ago when they were £9 a box. For a set where the packs do not have a retail booster box it was so worth it. I still have some sealed which are worth double now 12 months later. If you were to do this again perhaps shining legends, dragon majesty or something similar?
I may be off the mark since i dont make investments nor am i a tcg player, but wouldnt it depend on who these boxes are appealing to? Something like this should in theory be aimed at tcg players, but certain sets may not be viable after a few years. Like i know that right now, EX cards have been removed from tournament play. And even then a lot of cards can be bought separately for less. Just my take on it
Bret Beckman I think you don’t understand the trading card players mentality. In the end of the day, most people’s goal is to get every single card that had been ever released. Even though the competitive aspect shouldn’t be underestimated. The rarity of a item dictates the value in the end of the day. If it’s rare and desirable, it’s gonna be expensive no matter how viable it is in the competitive scene.
@@fredchou123 see but the collector mentality is where i fall into this. I like to collect the cards but i do it in the most cost effective manner i can. I understand the feeling of getting a super good pull, but once you have most of the cards in a set it's more cost efficient to just buy the solo cards to fill the gaps. Is this catering more to the people who open packs as a form of a gambling addiction? And now they have started doing reprints of cards from older sets which can only lower the value of them right?
Bret Beckman I don’t know the specific of the Pokémon community. I was once a u gi oh player so I’m just using past experience to judge. I will say yes the card opening is definitely for feeding the gambling addiction. And for my experience, reprint normally boost the value of a certain card due to some minor/major art differences that may appear in the reprint version.
If the reprint version and the original version can’t be distinguished than sure the value will decrease drastically.
@@fredchou123 ah. I used to play yugioh when i was in high school. It changed too much for me to continue playing. From what i can tell from the pokemon cards, they keep the art the same but update the stats on the cards. Like back in the day Charizard had 120HP and now there are a ton of regular cards that come close and quite a few that surpass that. EX/GX cards will sometime more than double that. So the reprints just have HP and damage adjustments to make them viable for play as far as i know. Like i said tho, im just a casual collector. I can count on my hands how many times ive actually played with the cards. I pick and choose what sets to buy as well. Like if a set has a good amount of cards and good art i'll usually buy into it. Card collecting is just too expensive for the average person like me to try to collect each set lol
When you’re investing in Pokemon you have to invest in the collectable sets. Certain sets may be expensive when they release due to certain cards, but the sets that are valuable over time are the ones that contain highly collectable cards. You have to be very familiar with Pokemon to know which sets will be the most collectable in the long term and therefore most profitable.
Yup. Anything with Pika, Zard, Ray, or first 3 gen legendaries or starters are collectibles.
Yep and eevees ;)
Anything with hot anime waifus in the set will grow nicely in value.
Why did you not invest in psa10 wotc pokemon product or sealed wotc products ? Would Have been much more lucrative. The market is oversaturated With modern Pokemon product. Theres no chance on making a big profit in such a small timeframe.

The very fact that you could amass such a huge number of these boxes proves that they are fake scarcity, and thus a bad investment. If you, one person have hoarded this many, how many others do you think have done the same. The only way this could have possibly worked is if they were multi national, and somehow there is a market boom after a new interest somewhere else with a big enough market, like indian

Unfortunately, new Pokemon hold no value unless they're playable in the current rotation. That's why Roaring Skies was at the 300 range when it was, then the set went out of rotation, and then got reprinted and killed it.
That’s why you have to invest from a collector standpoint. Look for sets or products that include either a unique formality that will not be seen later on in the years that makes them Collectable, or sets with chase cards that are highly sought after

Hello from the future and Evolving skies booster boxes are through the roof
Where’s the follow up to this?
If it wasn't for this video I almost would have done what you did but with magic haha I invest in pokemon products (mainly the tcg) I stick to pokemon mainly due to me growing up with that and having a general knowledge of both the lore and the games and the tcg. Dude you're actually the reason I got into investing in cards in general. I used to resell other things, but nothing was as steady as Pokemon tcg. Recently I wanted to go all in on Magic cause generally, the tcg does tend to have more of a dedicated player base and the cards do tend to get pretty gnarly. But what stopped me was I had no freaking knowledge about the tcg!! I didn't know what was good, what sets to look out for and stuff like that, I decided to pull out cause I know I probably would have gotten a huge loss. Keep doing you dude

I much prefer *2018 Beta Mart Holdings Rugged Half Fro Animal Eating Rudy* .
Anyhow, no risk no reward, right Rudester? As that wise person once stated, keep the farm in the family. Comparatively to MTG, Pokémon (in my opinion) is much more lucrative outside of just cardboard. So much, that (in this circumstance of calculated risk and time investment) if I didn't have to worry (too much) about having approximately $100-150,000.00 floppy ones in capital tied up over a 2+ year time frame (which is amazing Rudy, I mean that in a positive manner) on Poké-predictions, I'd have personally went hard AF on some Poké-Paraphernalia (that take up the same amount of storage space) like retro sealed/complete games, sealed collectibles/figures, vintage collectible items/boxes... things that can quite easily be found and acquired if you:
A) Have the capital to put out
B) Put in the effort to scour/search local B/S/T listings/groups or eBay (if there's anything us collectors can..collectively..agree on, it's that there's a thrill in the hunt for nostalgic collectibles/cards)
C) Invest the time to get the best deal(s) possible
Also pretty much anything relative to Charizard, in one way or another (take XY Flashfire for example... that was a great investment, personally) is usually a good "risk". But I bet you have your own stock pile of PSA Base Set Charizards..... DON'T YOU RUDY?!?!?!
Meh, win some lose some I guess eh?

It needs like 10 years to be overpriced vintage.
All that's happen over the last 2 years is that everything has rotated to expanded, which cuts it's playable in half and likewise it's price.
30 seconds into the video and I see why you made no profit. Most of the cards that have their highest profit margin are from when a set is first released, that's when people buy the most and rarer cards are at their peak worth. Also you have to be selective with what set you are buying, for example it's pretty obvious the 20th anniversary set is going to be worth more than just another random set they release. Yikes. Because back then, they were still going for the same as they were going for 2 years prior. These random target boxes usually end up for sale a year later. They always print too many.
Increasing the print run is something you could never foresee and perfectly illustrates your point of NOT betting the farm on any investment opportunity, no matter how compelling it might be!
Should've bought older pokemon products. The ex era sets hVe doubled in price in the past year
Shouldve bought it on what principle? Cant really use the knowledge of now to justify a decision that had to be made earlier.
TheGahta the fact that gold stars were just about the most popular cards and could only be found in those sets. Everyone was looking for them and mint copies and the best way to get mint copies is to pull them. Also sealed collecting was becoming more and more popular and people aren't collecting the newer sealed products
If I have to guess the reason Roaring Skies was popular was probably due to having competitive viable Pokemon Cards or Card in particular. In Pokemon I believe sets are taken out of rotation every two years, so after two years said set will drop in price point. Pokemon cards are bad investment, heck even old rare cards from back in the day are worth next to nothing. The only valuable Pokemon cards are either rare promos or new competitive viable cards.
roaring skies also contains one of the most meta defining cards in the expanded format, Shaymin-EX. not sure if this has anything to do with the set's popularity though considering it is just one card.
Great advise from you Rudy. Hope to learn more from you. Just a 2 cent of mine. Just go for the subset will do. Particularly Shining Legends. Or booster box with upcoming SM8.

Especially in the modern era now, it’s good to invest in sets that are unique or have insane chase. New Sets such as darkness ablaze and the upcoming champions path with the vmax charizard, cosmic eclipse since it’s such a broad set, team up because once tag team cards stop being produced; they will be sought after as a collectible since they’re unique like the legend cards from hg/ss.

Intricate gameplay with subtle interactions, and having people to play with. Which is kinda hard these days given new MtG cards are not exactly fitting the "intricate gameplay with subtle interactions".

hey there! just commenting to thank you for your breakdown on your investments (sorry to hear, of course, that it didn't turn out so well). i'm just beginning to get into Magic and I chanced upon your channel, and being someone that's getting started in the field of general investing and financial literacy; this is a pretty great way for me to start learning about the logic behind particular investments.
thanks for that bit about not betting the farm, and the whole breakdown of 10-20% ROI on your two pallets of Pokemon boxes. certainly made me think, and i'll keep an eye out for your future videos too.
I really love Rudy's Magic videos even though I've got NO CLUE what he's usually talking about BUT Hearing Rudy talk about Pokemon is making me cringe so hard. Yeah obviously Roaring Skies was extremely popular and Booster Boxes were extremely expensive even after a short time after the initial release. It seems like he didn't even question why that was the case though. Roaring Skies has been out of the standard format for 2 years now, even if it wasn't reprinted, it still wouldn't even be close to the old pricetag Rudy was talking about in this video. The ONLY reason it was that expensive was the staple card Shaymin EX which was ONLY obtainable in Roaring Skies Packs (not as a promotional card like many others). Shaymin EX soon rotated out of the standard format. It's very hard for me to believe that Rudy thought he would get returns after just 2 years from a series that was only popular due to it's playable cards. Also I don't think it was a bad investment as a whole. The collectibility of these cards is not just going to disappear. As time passes people will want to open old boosters and collect past sets. You just have to wait a lot longer than 2 years for that to happen though. Especially when those sets have been reprinted. Anyway that's all I had to say!
Cheers from Germany
So tl;dw, you couldn't catch 'em all
I remember watching that video 2 years ago.At the time I was really into pokemon and I thought investing into pokemon was a great idea. I understand you wanted certain sets so you bought the EX/GX boxes but I feel like (as you stated) it would be hard to make money on those. From what I can tell from most pokemon collectors or investors, its all about the booster boxes and loose cards. I know some of the older boxes are expensive but I don't really see them going down in price. Have you tried investing in earlier sets of pokemon?
This may sound naive, but is there a certain timescale on how long to hold on to investments or? I understand that it is tying up capital but is there a chance that these could have increased in value in the future?
Wait. So you're saying you actually profited between 8 to 10% total over the whole investment not including your labor? Title made it sounded like you got hosed. But seemed like a good idea at the time to diversify into this game.
8-10% minus 2 years of inflation, tying up capital and considering time/labor is still a loss. He might have still been technically up a couple k, but it very possibly wasn't worth the time.
@@groomersgotohell haha ya
I can literally sit and listen to you talk about cards for hours. Idk why. Maybe because Pokemon and Majic bring back so many memories.
I gave away my whole Pokemon Collection in 2000. I was ten years old and I thought I was too cool.
My collection was so large although at the time The only Pokemon Cards we're the original 150. But I had I don't even know. I had four First edition Charizards Three Bulbasaurs I think I also had three first edition Blastoise. Not even counting the numerous regular Holo Charizards. Basically every Holo ever made from 1997 I had. The original Red Blue snd green packs.
I'm not sure how much I had worth. But I do know if I had it now I could retire.
I gave it to my neighbor. Dumbest thing I ever did. I wonder if those cards are still sitting in those sleeves in that big red book I had..
Someone probably got rich off of my mistake.
All those kids who collected back in the late 90s like I did and still have their collection are sitting on a gold.mine.
I started collecting again a few years ago.
Fuzzy Nova
Same here bro.
:(
Lol you definitely didn't have enuff to retire. Rose tinted glasses.
@@GTLx16 of course not figure of speech. Idk how much the mint first edition original holos go for now but it's alot. And I regret it. I had a superior collection back then. 1997-2001.
The piece of paper in the background says “11/1/2019”

r u from da future?
Hey alpha!!!!! The story about the invester at the end really reminds me of my self when it comes to purchasing product. Should i just not play card games or stick to virtual versions? Does the guy in the story still invest?
New pokemon games are coming out soon. Should see an increase in value soon on that remaining investment.
Sadly the pre-orders for Let's Go are rather abysmal (for a Pokémon game, that is). This is sad to watch.
Nothing says I'll stay a virgin forever like pokemon cards.
Ive bought pokemon cards since age like 6 and I lost my virginity at 14
Do you enjoy opening or selling pokemon or magic more. I know selling force of will is your favorite but between those two whats your favorite?
