Ustad Zakir Hussain has his own class and style, wah ustad wah. He has brought evolution in tabla playing making it a lead instrument from an accompanying instrument. Nice fusion taking classical to another level.
I see a lot of comments complaining about the audience laughing. It is not as an insult. You will see (or hear) that the Ustad is showing the audience his skill on the Tabla, but it is more like he is conversing with the audience. Whenever he is playing good music, they are silently listening. But occasionally his is playing some amazing piece which people are not expecting to hear on a Tabla. The audience is laughing at themselves as they couldn't imagine such a music (or skill) is possible on the instrument. And if you look at Ustads face, he is working hard to get that laugh from the people. That is a compliment. An amazing talent but also hats off to the dedication and hard work he has put in to reach this level of expertise.
Really amazing how people automatically jump to negative conclusions.. I wouldn't even need to SEE the video to know they weren't ridiculing him. Rather they were happy and laughing with him. Oh well.
*JUST* returned from his concert at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. It was absolutely incredible! If you get a chance to see him (w/ or w/o his "Masters of Percussion") it's a MUST SEE! I've never seen anything like it and was utterly rapt by the entire performance. He also had a flutist who was just so so so wonderful. This music reaches deep into the human soul. You can't help but be moved by it.

Holy crap this is Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer (who's lost a ton of weight and looks great), and Zakir Hussain. Although this video makes it out to be a Zakir performance, I'd bet money half the crowd was there for Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. The best classical/bluegrass/world music band you're liable to find anywhere on the planet. Only the band Oregon comes close. Thanks for the vid!

I really wish this had better audio recording but I think this guy is one of the best artists of today. It's all in the eyes, just so pure and fun!
