I already knew she was the daughter of Max Born, the German Jewish Nobel Laureate in Physics and as a mathematician he was instrumental in the development of quantum mechanics. He and his family emigrated to Britain to escape the obvious Nazi threat as his career as a university professor had already been suspended. His daughter Irene, born in 1914 and who later married and had Olivia and her siblings had an obvious German accent. As someone who met Olivia privately after we’d both recovered from breast cancer, I knew that she unfortunately had a high risk of getting It in the first place. Most of us involved with breast cancer education learn that Ashkenazi Jewish females have a very high genetic risk of having it. I don’t presume that Olivia’s mother brought her up in that faith but the reality is that biologically, she inherited the genes from her mother’s German Jewish family. Ben Elton, the British/Australian comedian who now lives in Fremantle, WA, is Olivia’s third cousin via her mother’s side.
