      I got so many decks 75 total. 3/4 are precons upgrade. My resolution is to upgrade my old commanders at it's most power that I build from scratch. This was the time built not knowing about EDHREC and SCRYFALL. "NOT INCLUDING MY 3 TYPES OF GOLOS." Thanks committee.

    My resolution is to simply let my opponents play their decks. I find myself giving suggestions in the middle of the game whether my opponents want them or not, so I am planning on refraining input until after the game is done. My New Years resolution is to actually play commander!!! Followed this channel for years, have 9 decks and have never played a game of commander. Can’t get any friends to play, and unable to go to LGS due to work and family responsibilities, with also my apprehension of playing with random people due to being a little older and semi anti-social. Still don’t know how I am going to accomplish my goal.

  • @mfitkin

    Thank you for shouting out artisan Commander. It’s my favorite thing to mess around with. Artisan commander decks can hang in any pod and it shakes things up in such a great way. I’m excited for spoilers again specifically just watching for uncommons.

    • @mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299
      @mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I recently participated in a Pauper-mander event at my LGS and I found it neat that the deck had to be 99 commons but the commander could be any Uncommon creature, Legendary or not as long as it was uncommon. Looking at Artisan format seems very similar that's cool.
      I like that there are some offshoots from Commander. When Pioneer was started by WOTC I convinced my friends to make Pioneer-mander decks (100 card commander deck with only cards in Pioneer format); it was quite fun and refreshing not having the ''staples'' to add to the deck and the power levels of the cards now still lead to interesting games :P

    The best thing I did for my Magic collection/sanity was sort my cards and enter my collection into Deckbox. Now I can just dump a deck idea into Deckbox, and it will tell me what I have and what set it's from, and I can pull the box and grab it so quickly.

    completely agree with rachel about shuffling putting wear on your deck, cards, time, etc. i read a description once that shuffling your deck is the equivalent of a loading screen, and once i saw that connection, i think about it every time. i think that's why it's so important to do stuff like fetching/etc. at the end of your turn instead of waiting until the previous player's end step so you aren't shuffling and making everyone wait

    For Murph: I'd highly recommend spending the time documenting your collection online (I presume Archidekt lets you do this). After you're done "distilling" it down further, put what's left into an online collection tracker and keep that updated with any changes. Means you can brew decks completely on the go and know exactly what you have in your collection / in decks already. Saves a good amount of time and money in the long run. And, honestly, it's quite a fun project to document all your stuff!

      Same I have one deck that is strictly reserved for if I'm part of a specific pod at my FLGS (Ur-Dragon, a full proxy, OG Dual Lands, all the fetches, shocklands, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Ancient Tomb etc.) it's an 8 or a 9 on the power ranking which is about the power level that group plays at. For newer players I have a kind of silly Eldrazi deck that is much slower to get rolling and tends to be more 'slightly upgraded precon' level of play.

    I have around 50K cards - I bought some organizers putting Commons in their own separate boxes by color and alphabetizing the entire lot by color. I am FINALLY down to the last 1000 or so - buying just $ingle$ and drafting at the LGS has reduced my intake. Not "cracking packs" - but between The Command Zone (and other online sites of markedly less quality) - I have been having a grand time. Got my The Command Zone Whatnot purchases - which set me back alittle as they had a lot of cards - as my most recent purchases! Glad I got one (OK, i was lucky - I got two). Need another Obscure and Underrated Cards Episode!

    I had a similar issue to Arthur, but the way I approached fixing it was different. I put my decks into an order, and had to pull from the front to force playing some decks. And, if I skip it more than once, I have to play it and decide after that if I want to keep it. It’s led to more rebuilds than anything, often resulting in changing the commander, but it’s helped me like playing all of my decks!

  • @FriendlyNewt
    @FriendlyNewt Před 6 měsíci

    Josh it helps if you're building several decks at once and you have your good cards seperated, you get so many ideas. Purpose is great but so is serendipity. It's tough but organizing your collection to sell and find specific cards for decks is different than sorting to build. If you differentiate your collection into some stuff for one and some stuff for the other it helps. My cards are a mess, but my binder of "Interesting" cards is a joy to go through and usually provides an idea or two when I'm building. And my Good card box is a joy. Next step, organize cards for different power levels and recover from my current archetype focus. Like if I wanted to find ETB cards or Big Creatures I would be totally lost. But if I need a sword of the animist, smothering tithe, and a sol ring I'm set I really enjoy finding them and it won't take too long.

    One way I managed to make things simple is instead of buying multiple copies of cards is investing in a custom 2.8-3.0mm corner cutter, guillotine, a decent printer, and decent 300gsm paper - there are also options for foiled finishes, or if have the time you can remove the fronts of actual foil magic cards to print on. A little research about image and print setup, and my cards come out identical to the eye and no one can tell the difference especially when sleeved.
    Across three decks, it ends up even cheaper than buying proxies or counterfeit cards, and done on demand - I mean the entire initial setup is cheaper than compared to a single custom edh deck. Save heaps of money and time (buying/chasing/lloking for cards) for more important things like family and friends. It even offers an opportunity for you to do some arts and craft with your kids and gives more meaning to the deck that 'we' put together.
    The money I save in this process allows me to buy reserve list cards, like dual lands - if you're playing non-budget decks you save enough to buy a dual land per deck.
    No need for folders and BCW boxes... after a while you'll realise they're all pieces of cardboard and the actual thing isn't really any different (as long as you get the printing process right).

    Can't wait for another year of videos, I have three resolutions to make. Some easier than others
    1st: To Play More Commander than I have been the past year. I keep making decklists and have/built/buying precons but never do anything and stop when I realize I don't play enough
    2nd: After watching Rachel with some of her signed cards in her decks I thought it looked really cool and after managing to get a set of the Sol Ring/Command Tower from Jimmy and Josh's Signed Whatnot listing. This is my start
    3rd: I plan to start grouping my decks together. I would prefer to not take decks apart, but being 100 cards commander decks can be difficult and expensive. So I will buy the longer deck boxes and group them by groups such as Boros, Golgari, and Jeskai. This way the lands and more expensive cards can be reused easier between decks. This idea is to also help justify spending the money on the more expensive cards I have been putting off

Im only at 2600ish cards but i can brew and search for anything in my collection in a few seconds

    My resolution is to build and play more decks I love rather than building decks to meet a "quota." My commander resolution this year to build more pointed decks. I am the chaos gremlin in the pod, and as a result I don’t win as many games. This ain’t a problem but it does feed all of the games into a Samey feeling. Where the same two people usually, go head to head. (If one player is just spinning his wheels it’s easy to dispatch of him and a player not keeping pace.)

    a few years ago I sold a big part of my collection to a size where they all fit in square collecters box and 2 binders. Mono-colored are stored in the box itself, and the binders are reserved for multi-colored and collerless respectively. This is working pretty good for me, but i'm debating wether or not I should make sub-categories in my mono-colored box for the main things a deck needs (Ramp, Draw & Interaction). This would make it even easier to go trough my collection when looking for cards.

    I went through an addiction phase for about a year, I have ready to play all in boxes and sleeves, over 100 decks 😬it’s great tho I play with my my friends and family and let people use my decks so it’s super fun it does take a lot of time to go through upgrades when new cards come out

    as I am watching this episode while sorting out a huge pile of few months of shopping and adding them to my collection on moxfield, i think a good resolution would be to not just use the cards I have instead going to spend money i don't have on new cards :)

    I will note that sorting cards and categorizing them goes a lot faster than you might think if you are dreading it. I had about 12,000 cards when I went through them, and it took maybe 8-10 hours to get them in easily findable categories. It really takes the pressure off of getting rid of cards if they are easier to search through and manage. And once they are sorted, it is very easy to get into a habit of putting cards away instead of piling them up (at least for me it was) because putting them away is simpler when they already have a spot to go in.

    Mine is to actually play more, but with Magic being outrageously priced currently I've decided to play more pauper. Now I just have to find other pauper players. Would be pretty great if you guys played some pauper extra turns or something.

    This past year I put together a deck of every color combo, (minus the 4 color just did one) but as a newer player that turned into a LOT of decks that are just full of fluff and don’t feel fun to play. So this year I think I’d like to refine some of the weaker decks. Right now feels like I have a handful of pretty high power and all the rest are just laughably bad. Hoping for quality to go with the quantity! And then I’ll have a good range for any play group.

    I pulled a Double Masters 2022 Cavern of Souls, sold it and another card to get the Zendikar Expedition Cavern, and just recently sold that and another card to get a Foil Paths of the Dead - Cavern of Souls from LotR for my Hobbit/ Food deck. All Caverns from the same shop. I prefer to support locally when I'm looking for cards.
    I'd say my resolution is to not be as excited when things are going well. I always get excited when my decks pull off amazing combos, and I always end up missing triggers, like gaining life when a creature enters the battlefield. I need to slow down and pay attention to my board states more. So many cards have so much text now, and when my battlefield fills up, I end up missing things.

    I need to play more removal, it's hard for me to put enough when they don't feel like they synergize with the rest of the deck. But it's needed if I want to improve power level at least.

    I have always ran only on colored fetches, just because, to me, it felt like cheating, even though it's allowed. Then I built a more competitive EDH deck, and added some extra, and it was ok, but didn't make me want to add them to other decks

    As a new player (started Commander in October of last year) I am resolving to learn how to use and search archidekt, moxfield, and EDHRec. and what is the differences between them. I am a little confused. . Maybe I can look back and see any episodes you produce as a how to use!

    • @jolteon345
      @jolteon345 Před 6 měsíci

      EDHRec just looks at the decks already made online and compiles a list of cards that people put in them. It's honestly not good for much outside of being a starting point and finding niche cards, as just taking the best stuff from it tends to make powerful piles. It also runs the risk of you finding "nonbos" because people run the card for some reason. For newer players, EDHRec is good, just don't take the suggested cards to heart.
      Moxfield and Archidekt are the same thing, and all about preference. I prefer Moxfield because it's online playtester feels better and it automatically filters your searches by your Commander's color identity.

    • @MrFierygrave
      @MrFierygrave Před 6 měsíci

      Archidekt and mox field are very similar for building decks, mostly becomes personal preference on which you want to use. I find archidekt has (or had don't know if its still true) better visual builder which i prefer to build with. they have a lot of the same features just set up slightly differently. EDHrec isn't a building website but shows you how often certain cards show up for particular commanders and can give recommendations.

    Honestly, another way to spend less is to just use untap and proxy more. I'm sure it's not in the interest of Commad Zone and Card Kingdom to do this, that's fine. But it is an option.
    None of my decks actually have proxies rn, but I don't like that if I want to make changes to my commander deck I need to spend >$30 for a couple pieces of fancy paper. I do not have a high enough paying job for like a normal savings account, the cards do not get to be that high priority (and I'll make sure I can still bring legal things to my local store and other events so that I can be in the community, I'm just not paying for fetches or tutors)
