- After my recent video discussing why doctors are quitting medicine, I asked you guys if you’d like to see me do a video covering what options are there for med students, residents, and doctors looking to change careers. The response was overwhelming with hundreds of you asking me to talk about this topic. So, after weeks of waiting, here is that video.
We'll cover the full spectrum of careers from telemedicine and teaching to finance, entrepreneurship, and everything else in between. If you've been considering a career change but have no idea where to start, this one is for you.

Pharmacy Tech and Pharmacist.

Pharmacy, optometry, podiatry, vet, dentisty
You can motivate drs to stay in their careers to help patients instead of encouraging them to quit it !
Thats a start !
Can people who have done postgraduation or super speciality like Cardiology/Neurology from india get into US without clearing USMLE ? Please answer if possible I get different answers on the net . Thank you in advance.
I left med school after one semester, acquired my business degree, and now I'm a senior executive at a life science company. Best decision I ever made.
Would love to hear more about your journey sometime!!
Like literally started a 4 year course or an MBA?
Would love to hear more.
Thank you.
I did one semester of medical school, passed all my classes, and realized it wasn’t the right career path for me. I acquired a letter of recommendation from the Dean of the medical school for a business school and acquired my MBA instead. I’m now in a prominent management position at a food based company utilizing both my degrees Bachelor in Science and Masters in Business. Can’t be scared to switch things up if the current situation doesn’t feel ‘right’.
Thanks for sharing your experience! May I ask what a senior executive at a life science company can expect to make in a year? Considering my future career paths myself
@@Hamza-li7nq is completely dependent on the company, the role, and what type of compensation package is negotiated. The range can be anywhere for 50K to millions.
To me it feels really sad to see doctors, scientists gets so little compensation when there are many 20 years old so called “Influencers” are making millions without even doing anything that brings actual value. Some may say doctors earn a lot but bro when you realise how many years they have to work for that money you will realise even that much money isn’t doing doctors justice
Mmm idk about that one chief
Many Careers work hard. Just because doctors/phds require the most amount of schooling doesn’t meant other careers deserve less success than them.
@@imthecob9567 being a doctor or a scholar takes more willpower and academic intelligence which only a fraction of people have or willing to do,but there are other works which are more physically demanding than being a doctor but those aren’t as hard to be as it is to be a doctor.More than that A doctor stars to make actual money after 12/13 years, during the first 10 years they literally make peanuts when they are literally sacrificing their youth.Their work literally save human lives !!! and to be clear No, I am not saying Doctor is better than all other profession but it just a shame that how little facilities they get
To add to this, medical school debt can be anywhere from 300-600k- no joke- depending on the loans and payment plans you take. So you have about 10 years of your life you are dedicated to working/studying nonstop and making no or negative money while others are putting money in the bank and buying first, second homes, etc.
This is the reality.
And yes there are trust fund babies who have billions without working. Life is not fair.

It’s easy to see an MD/DO as a degree that solidifies your future as a practicing physician for life, but really it’s a tool that can help you in many sectors of non-clinical health work and so many other career paths!
Well said
Can you name some? My ER doctor spouse (15 years experience), just gave her notice
Been thinking
I think you did the right thing leaving medicine. You had a passion that was greater then your original path and you were going to be successful regardless. You have that drive and ambition and that'll lead to success no matter what path you take.
Not the hotline bling thumbnail 😅 but seriously thank you for this! A lot of people feel lost once they give up on becoming a doctor and that can lead to a lot of stress so having great alternatives is really important. Thanks for this! 🙏🏽
How are you everywhere on YT lol.
Its so amazing she gets likes from every content creater!
this is the absolute best video you have ever made! as someone who has considered not doing residency because of the time, low pay, and so many other factors, this is incredibly helpful and insightful. Thank you so much for this, you have no idea how much this is appreciated!
I came pretty close to leaving med school but I’m so GLAD I didn’t. If you’re reading this and thinking about quitting (whatever the reason) consider doing a research fellowship or some kind of break year to give yourself some time to process what the issues are and what the next steps could be.
I took a research break and decided not to quit because I couldn’t see myself doing anything else… and LoAn$.
I took a break for a month went on a vacation and im feeling way better.
How did you find the research fellowship?
how can we do a research fellowship?
When I was rotating through a specialty surgical rotation I worked with someone who was looking for a research fellow. I got lucky.. it was just perfect timing. Some people do them after med school to boost their cv prior to applying to residency. I would talk to program directors or any attendings who are known for publishing their research at your university. I ended up graduating with honors in research so it was 100% worth it (even though I didn’t end up matching into that specialty)
I’m graduating in med school this year. I love medicine, but it’s exaustive and so much responsibility that sometimes I just wish being a full time mom one day.

Regarding switching from surgery to anaesthesia, I've heard it said that if your favorite place in the world is the OR, go surgery; if your favorite place in the hospital is the OR, go anaesthesia.
I like that
I decided I didnt want to practise when I was in MS 3. I had two options..drop out of medical school or complete med school and pursue other things. I decided the later. I graduated and have my MD. No one can never take my MD from me. I am going back to school to get my MBA. My plan is to go into Medical administration and operations!.
Uh...how will you pay loans?

We had a VP Administrator in our hospital who did this. She realized her 3rd year she didn't want to practice.
Reading this while applying for my MD now. So motivating. Thanks!
Another option you didn’t mention is public service. After 20 years in private practice in pediatrics, I left clinical medicine for a career as a clinical reviewer for new drugs at FDA. I find the work interesting, and the lifestyle and benefits are much better than private practice. No more night call, weekend or holiday duty, and it’s important work for public health.
Can an MD graduate do this?
@@noraaa8479Yes.
Can a fresh foreign medical graduate get a job like this?
@@nelebdavila96 It is possible as long as you have an active medical license in DC or any US state.
Very interesting discussion Kevin. It really is a different way to look at things. My dream is to be an orthopedic surgeon and plan on sticking to it. But it’s cool to see the reasons why lots of people would want to leave and the options that are available
It seems like Kevin is hands down one of the best creators for actually listening to, and caring about his audience. Particularly on this channel.
In short, IF it ain't working, it ain't working. What is, is. Accept it and move on in life. Life is more important than any degree / career / etc. If it comes, lovely. If it doesn't, it's okay. Accept it.
Hey J these tips are helping pre-meds as well. Thanks for the video!
Wow i love this content! Im a resident & no plan to quit, but ive been wanting to do clinical practice as an attending part time & interested in doing other things to not get bored. Absolutely valuable information. Thank you
You're not alone J
I'm not going to lie, I was that guy that felt some type of way when someone said they were leaving a career that they took so much time, effort, and sacrifices. After listening and reading some literature on philosophy it help me tweak my knee jerk response. My intentions were never to guilt trip into believing what they were doing was wrong but to really understand. This channel and others help understand the why. Not everyone is the same and some people love the thrill of a new endeavor. I'm currently trying to finish up my bachelor degree in order to get into Medical School after changing my career. I wanted to challenge myself and I can see why people do things. I want to be rational as possible because it isn't a right or wrong thing. I'm here to say to your challenge helping to be more competitive and I thank you. So I'm glad you quit to give us to insider scope on everything.
Thanks for valuing our input. I was really looking forward to this video
I’m now homeschooling my kids and running a successful nonprofit that my husband and I founded. And opportunities keep coming. I don’t regret quitting medicine at all and I’m grateful that my kids have their mom available at all times and get to experience learning in a way that most kids can’t.
This is exactly what I want to do! Would love to connect if youre open to it?

I remember one med student who went into cadaver lab and left the first week to go into pharmacy. They couldn't stomach the cadavers.

What type of job were you able to find?
Thank you for the quick turn around on this video! Commenting early for the algo - also theres a guy called Dr. John Jurica that makes a ton of content for non-clinical jobs for MDs and DOs (podcast and CZcams). I think the production value of your videos are definitely higher quality but he might provide more breadth and details (especially in terms of interviews with people who have gone that path) for other people interested!
People give their opinions and comments no matter what you do. I am glad you are making this video for ppl who want to leave medicine, I am sure they will have options to choose from. This video coming from you makes it even better because you've been there done that and people can 100% relate to you. Keep up the great work Kevin. As always I enjoyed watching your content and I am looking at the grey area of having a side hustle. Good luck :)
I got my MD. But I am not pursuing residency or even want to be an attending. I want to live life. Hospital life just did not feel right for me.
What did you decide to do with your MD?
What are you doing now?
I'm an MS3 getting an MBA and was thinking of which pathway I should pursue, consulting vs practicing. This video really helped me realize that I don't need to choose one or the other. The hope is that I can pursue both during residency and have an established career in consulting by the time i'm an attending. Now I just have to match into ortho! Thank you for this video it helped a ton!
Match first. Work a year. Then consult. You’re useless without clinical experience to anyone.

This is great video for young medico like me who has no idea and always had a thought that this is glorious profession but the price you will pay will haunt your whole life....your youth
Always super knowledgeable Dr. Jubbal, great video
Changing specialties was the answer for me . Medicine is like a buffet . There’s something for just about everyone in the profession .
My satisfaction skyrocketed after I switched specialties .
I was not pressured to become a physician. I think that being forced to become a physician is a recipe for being unhappy. I am in a well liked highly desirable specialty but I still have disgruntled colleagues.
What was the switch ?
Happy to hear :) what was your speciality and what did you switch to?
What speciality? A bit of information would be nice.
What switch?
Congratulations... what was your previous specialty and to which specialty did you change? Iam a doctor too.
Telemedicine, medical education and research, switching specialities, other careers within healthcare
Non- clinical
Chart reviews, medical consulting,venture capital,angel investing,medical informatics,medical expert witness,healthcare administration,medical writing,entrepreneurship
This works for nurses, too! Every job I've had as a nurse has been different and working with different patients and in different situations. It's been great!
This video is so important. I'm an IMG who just matched into residency, I'm excited and happy for what my career trajectory looks like. But from this video, most of the career paths mentioned which involve heavy pay checks require you to have a license at least. So if you get tired, opt out and do something else, seeing that you have a license already.
Great channel! You should include the use of DOs in your vocabulary to fight the stigma against DOs!
Thanks for sharing this video! I’m a US-IMG graduate who made a furniture refinishing hustle during the pandemic.. Eventually I’d like to be a pediatrician with an IMG mentorship retreat program. It dabbles into a potential real estate hustle and also for IMG students to gain USCE under my clinical practice.
I think finding and doing rotations or research with successful alumni would be a great opportunity for current students to get exposure to many career options!
Never stop ur videos 🙏
This was sooooo informative and super helpful. I wish they taught this more in the pre-med track. Thank you!

I am so glad I never let my mother forced me into medicine. I finally found a related career in healthcare she accepted. when I worked at the hospitals or clinics, I was always grateful I am not a physician or nurse. My position was also extremely stressful but after 15 years, I was able to make a lateral move to big pharma. So happy I did!
I have to say, my hospital and clinical experience was extremely helpful when I ended up in research. Unless I did a residency with big pharma, fresh out of school I doubt I would get into big pharma. or research with paying my dues first. A few years to gain clinical competency and manage tech and run satellites or a departments at minimum.
This is great! I’m a full time internist but looking to diverse outside of direct clinical practice to prevent burnout
Watching this as a first year med student- greetings from Saudi Arabia
I couldn't click faster. Much love 💜
What I love about medicine was learning something new. But when I got my license and started practising, aside from the money, nothing really motivated me. Now, I'm stepping away from medicine because it means nothing to me anymore.
Are u Doctor
What are you doing now?
At the end of the day its a job. And the only motivation to do a job is money
This video is gold. Very helpful info thank you
Loved this video - incredibly informative. Thank you!! :))
I will say I was in a mentorship meeting with an anesthesiologist that originally started off as a family medicine doctor and it wasn’t until he was renewing his license that he realized he really wanted to be an anesthesiologist and he went back to residency and he became an anesthesiologist. He said it’s not conventional and he would’ve done it differently if he could go back in time but you have to be happy with what you choose
Sadly, going back to residency after you "used up the years" is not really an option since Medicare won't really fund it.
This video is also helpful for international MD who cannot practice medicine in the US.
I am finding this really tough for me to make this transition after finishing podiatry school and residency because a lot of these positions are asking for an MD degree, especially because I think I want to switch specialties 🙈. Anyway, I will find out how to make this transition and maybe even start a business. Who knows! Thank you for this video!!!
Love this video too; worth asking what you truly want and whether business is the answer
The video I have been waiting on 😊
Fantastic advice. Would you be willing to do a video on MD/DO side hustles?
Quite a few side hustles Megan, worth asking what you truly want. Options are endless. One of my favourite has been creating a part-time online health business.
Can you please do a video on options for foreign medical graduates who do not want to go through the hardship of USMLE or residency all over again. Thanks
I feel like all service careers are ending up
To be this way. I’m a speech therapist and I feel so burnt out. I wish it would change. I entered to help people, but it’s all paperwork
Yep- it’s scary- because everyone wants service, but it’s only in management and developing systems (apps/companies/schooling) that makes the money and allows the time.
This is so true! The burn out is real
Wished this video came 3 years before! 😥😥 I had a tough 3 years experiencing whatever was said at the beginning of the video.
Exactly! How is it different from any other job? Yes u have debt, but u have hi salary. If work is too much, shorten your hours until happy. And you can work, lightly, well into your 70’s or 80’s.
Good lesson to be learned from those who go the PhD route - the majority do not end up in the "traditional" academic path. MDs/DOs are far more marketable than PhDs in the business world and have many opportunities to make comparable amounts of money.
As someone currently working as a quant on Wall street I can promise whoever told you that MD/DO is more marketable than PhD in business is straight capping (aside from IB and consulting)
Hey Dr Jubbal! Would definitely love to hear what kind of opportunities you have available in terms of working with you!
So glad I did not quit medical school or residency. I have always supplemented my time with research so I am not stuck 100% in clinical medicine.
That's one of the best Videos I've ever seen. I've been practicing as a Medical Laboratory Scientist for 9 years and I realize I don't wanna spend my weekends and holidays in a a hospital 🙃
Could you make a video about job options for IMGs that want to work in the USA but don't want to do a residency?
Lots of great suggestions. Unfortunately the vast majority of them will require completing residency and gaining attending/independent clinical practice experience first.

Is it possible to *just* be a researcher/professor after an MD-Phd program? Or do you need to see patients? I've considered becoming a researcher in neurology/psychiatry, but I think I would have trouble with the social interaction required for seeing patients.

This is a good video but if you are a physician that has been practicing for years and you want to be in a non clinical role then getting those jobs is extremely competitive because they don’t have a network or the experience. Unfortunately I don’t know any physicians that have been able to get other jobs outside of clinical medicine. It would be nice to see some actual data but who is going to admit that they can’t get hired. Most of the public health jobs are going to nurses or PA. In addition who has time to get another degree while you are working! Most physicians work at least 50 hours a week so when can you fit in schooo!!

I left med after 15 years. The burnout made me so sick. It was the best decision I ever made for myself, but I don’t know how I can help people now 😢
The burnout is real!!!
When you say 15 years are you including medschool and residency or straight up 15 years of professional practice, either way goddamn.😢
Ffffuuuuucckkk 15 years dude! I realized that Ill be in the same position and im just a second year undergraduate. A lot of options you mentioned (most) increasingly require board certification and beyond. I am wondering if you know of anyone who has been able to find lucrative work as a fully licensed doc with partial residency experience. I have qualified for some locums in some states, in others, they want me to be board certified for the exact same position. It is a struggle for sure. Stay in if you can, even if you are burnt out beyond measure. Leaving was not in my best interest overall but it was the only thing I could do at the time. My health was failing and I needed to be physically there to take care of patients. Now that I’m well, well, getting back into the game is not so easy….

Drives me crazy when other pre-meds and med students think they will make less outside of being a physician. I use to think like that too, and it’s not necessarily the case. Many professions pay a lot more without going into extreme debt and spending 10+ years in school.

Yes to low compensation. I make under $1000 a month for private hospital residency. Approximately $600.... Let that sink in guys. I am not from a first world country. Yeah sure gaslight all you want and say this is training, you're being a snowflake. You're gonna earn a lot more later on. But times have changed. I left at the end of my third year. Probably a life-saving decision tbh.
Hello sir,Hope you re in good health,I m a MBBS graduate and currently been working in Nepal as a Medical officer.Despite my strong desire to be a clinician in USA and think i m not going to make it because of economical issues.I would like to work with your further and promise to deliver my best. Thanks
I’m really considering leaving just because of how competitive and stressful it is
Pls keep me updated
