Hey bro, enjoyed the vid as always...I'm a recovering heroin addict & likewise have spent a good bit of time behind bars. However by the grace of God, I now work for the faith based program which saved my life inside the prison I spent the majority of my time in, so I can offer a perspective as both an inmate, & now an employee. There isn't much else I can say that you didn't already cover. What I will say, however, is that the number of companies benefiting from cheap prison labor is so far above what the majority of people come to think it is...its absolutely RIDICULOUS...BORDERLINE SLAVERY if you could see some of the conditions these inmates work in. Let's just say a job in a Taiwanese sweat shop would be a step up...so sad.

I agree that prison labor isn't a bad thing
but the pay prisoners get, should be way higher for what they do
even if it's just half of the minimum wage, that's already way more than most get.
Most ideal would be that they have a 'real' job waiting for the first 3-6 months after the sentence so these people have some experience outside the prison before applying to other jobs

Depends i think community service as part of a sentence can be fine as long as we accept it's part of the sentence o and it's servicing the community not a private company, Living in a non-American country like I see the 15 year old's clean up the park every January because they got catch lighting illegal fireworks and have to clean up the park for like a month rather then go to prison for fireworks and to me that seems well reasonable.
Keep in mind my opinion of the American corrections system is very low, my opinion is that the US sets up most prisoners to fail they don't stand a chance after release and are very likely to return to prison, something we all shouldn't want.

The connection between prison population and prison labor is that obviously prison labor is significantly cheaper then outside labor. The companies that benefit off of this exploitation like the manufacturers and private prisons lobby governments to keep the drug war going and lock up non-violent offenders, increasing prison population and therefore profits. That is what the prison industrial complex is. Personally, I think having prisoners choose to work is a very good way for people to do something productive on the inside, I just think that they should be paid what they are worth.

Another super interesting video joe. I have never been to prison nor involved in any kind of criminal stuff. However, being a loyal follower of your channel since 5 months now, I have a much better understanding of the jail/prison system. Like you have described it so often, prison or jail seems like a form of punishment that dosent offer much if any training or education of any sort. To me its a wasted opportunity to take someone and turn him into something better. Whith pure punishment, an inmate only increase his chances of pauvrety, relapsing, depression and more. Having a job in jail or prison seems to me like a way to not only make money, but also it provide a vital opportunity to do something real and positive. I think that it should be more encouraged, promoted and structured toward rehabilitation, skils training and personal growth. Also, the prison take a huge cut, what are they doing with all this money? Joe could you make a video about how jails and prison are funded? I am a big fan of aps and i ride with you bro. Peace.

Some info:- I worked at an at&t call center for 10 years plus in Los Angeles from 2000 to 2011 - everybody who answered phone calls, I mean everyone, over 200 reps in one floor in our building made minimum $25 dollars an hour, after 4 years of service. And the pay still increased by $2.00 dollars every 6 months regardless of your performancr because of the Union contract until you reached the maximum pay which was $31/hour in 2011 when I left - So I can imagine the money deal the prison system got, by allowing prison workers to answer phone calls at less than $1.00 dollar an hour. At&t would also avoid paying for medical benefits and a bunch of other insurance benefits that came with the Union contract if hired directly.

I don't have a real problem with using prison labor per se, but as stated, the prisoner(s) need to be compensated for their time. The other thing that needs to happen for me to really be okay with this is that those companies that do make use of this labor, need to pass those cost saving measures onto us, the consumers. Of course we all know that's not going to ever happen. We all know that money is going straight into their pockets instead.

The only issue I see with prisons using labor is the states that force you to work, thats slavery doesn't matter if your locked up, you were sentenced to time not labor (Community service). However in terms of the pay for the states that have volunteer labor, you chose to work there at the agreed price, gather up your fellow workers and strike or quit the job until the pays higher, all about bargaining and unionizing in prison.

    1. The level of prison (federal or state) and the level of security.
    2. If the prisoners are part of a minimum security work release or work rehab program.
Texas Instruments has used prisoners in the past as work rehab program.
On the flip side of the coin TI currently hires special needs students from local public schools to sort small parts and teach them valuable life skills.

Shit prison labor if your paid halfway decent could be a good thing. I worked for the WV division of highways and I believe I made $0.64 an hour. But the big payoff was getting out of the prison for 8-10hrs a day. We got to work with the regular workers and they treated us pretty good. They gave people smokes, bought us pizza and home cooked meals for lunch. As long as you did your job in a professional manner you were well taken care of. Sure the prison took almost half for rent and the other half for child support, but they couldn’t stop the regular crews from taking pretty decent care of us.

I have to agree but disagree at work experience that you can get while doing your bid you might not get work experience in a relative free world job but you get used to waking up doing a shity job dealing with shit co workers customers bosses supervisors so at least when you come home and you get a shity job you're like you're at least I'm making more money and staying out of trouble compared to what I was making locked up

Joe like the hair dye ,looks so much better and you look younger too! Prison labor well I don’t think there is anything wrong with it either. Prisoners get to make some money and helps pass the time I would think. I don’t think it’s right to pay them that low salary. Especially if you want them to do a good job at it!

I like you salt and pepper look...I think investing in the prisoners enabling them to work is a good thing as long as they are on good behavior..even if the one prisoners are acting up...bordem..put thermo work...win...win...

Prisoners should make the same wages people make in the free world. People who are locked up have bills in the free world too. Children and families to support, mortgages, car notes, etc that stuff doesn’t just go away when you’re behind bars.

It's good in a way for the prisoners to learn a skill or two. Also they have something to do and make their time goes by fast. But at least pay them minimum wage. So they can have for commissary and save up. That have a few dollars in their pocket once they are released.

It doesn't matter what prisoners think of prison labor.
The problem is that it pushes everyone else's wages down.

You should know why companies wouldn't hire ex-convicts, Joe. You hired plenty of ex-cons for your cleaning and house flipping gigs, and it almost always turned into a shitshow because of their lax work ethic, drug abuse and general untrustworthyness. Even a cheap employee can be really costly.

IMHO, being without your freedom IS punishment. Anything beyond that is revenge. Bad food, austere conditions, forced labor, do not have to be part of a prison sentence. Neither does labor for free.

NO Joe don't color your hair. It is wayyyyy to dark. A common mistake all aging men make. I owned a hair salon for 10 years. You should always chooses a color 2 shades lighter than you want to be and it will be what you want and you won't look like snidely whiplash or someone that fell in a vat of black shoe polish.
