    Pro tip: run blind. When I run, I never know where or how far I’m going. Sometimes I’ll theorize a route just to get started, but I always make a point not to follow it and instead “go the extra mile”. That “extra mile” is an unknown distance and leads to all sorts of adventures. It’s not too hard to figure out the distance after the run. So, not only is this a great way to push yourself, it also makes running interesting and can build a lot of confidence.

    Hey, I was also homeschooled, and I'm looking at becoming a SEAL, but everywhere I look there seems to be a big lack of maturity in the teams. It has me thinking of trying SF instead. Could you make a video on your experience of going through the different phases of BUD/S and some advice on making it through? Thank you.

    I can really relate to this. I right now am a Life scout. I weigh a 140 pounds. I hardly have any muscle but am trying to build some. I really want to join the SEALs, and I plan to enlist after I graduate high school. I was really going to put myself through everything that those other guys did, but now after watching them fail, I will not. I am still going to train and 'Be Prepared', but will not do that much. My question for you is if the entrance exam is hard or not. As someone that shared my same body type, is there any tips that you could give me on being ready for it. Thanks for the great video.

    What the heck is "guiding"? I want to know

    • @chadmetcalf
      @chadmetcalf  Před 4 měsíci +2

      It is a technique to help you swim in a straight line in open water. Essentially pick something in the horizon and every 3-5 strokes readjust your direction towards it. You want to do it while staying as horizontal as possible so you don’t introduce a ton of drag and slow yourself down.
      If there is nothing in the horizon to aim at and you can see the shoreline - try to maintain the same distance from the shore- this is a bit more difficult, but possible.

    the odd thing is (and this meant in the spirit of scientific enquiry) that mental toughness notwithstanding, a lot of Rangers, SF, SEALs etc struggle MENTALLY in just the normal to and fro of general civvy life, once they leave; they don't 'adapt'; adapting to challenges which are a lot more abstract than 'go there', 'do this', 'climb that' is an unheralded skill - and a sign of mental toughness

      I now ask myself, "What skills might I have acquired in SEAL training that would be of value to serve in my community after I retired and became a civilian? After all, every SEAL becomes a civilian at some point. I wanted to be a security asset, so I bought a firearm and got professional training. I wanted to be a leader so I learned from Jocko how to do that better. I want to stay in shape so I work out. I wanted a brotherhood so I joined jiu jitsu. For me it became more powerful to understand the skills I had and the skills I'm actively building that are based on the same principles that make the SEAL Teams successful. I don't live with regret. Why? Because I'm actively pursuing the goal of becoming the best human being I can be, working hard, and maintaining confidence.
      And that's what all good SEALs continue to do after they leave service. Continue to be good human beings, and we can do the same.
