    My father was a locksmith and he could hardly throw away anything that looked useful. Over the years, he accumulated 2 boxes of springs of all sizes from discarded machines.
    For my Bigsbys, I never really liked the springs from the factory either. I helped myself in my father's collection and always found a spring with better efficiency, which I then only had to shorten to the right length. If a spring is a little too short when you cut it to length, or if you are stringing thicker strings, you can use washers to help.

    Today I fitted the yellow spring to my Pro 2 Jazzmaster, all with the help and advice from you two wonderful Jazzmaster players/experts.
    It took five weeks for the spring to arrive here in Australia from China, but I was quite happy to wait for it.
    I opened up one end of the spring with a Dremel rotary file attached to my cordless drill plus I also used a round file, so it would fit securely about half way over the thimble. I cleaned off the yellow paint from each end of the spring for a good earthing connection as you advised. It was all a simple upgrade to do and I am very happy with the result. There's no click sound from the Panorama either.
    I had fitted 10 to 52 strings in the hope that they would work the Panorama better than 11's, but they didn't and still bottomed out with the original spring.
    Now, about these muddy pickups on the Pro 2, would the push/pull control wiring work with Lollar Black Bobbin pickups?

    • @Puisheen
      @Puisheen  Před rokem +3

      This is wonderful news! So glad the spring worked out for you! The push-pull as wired won't do anything for the Lollars as the switch is really just there to activate or deactivate part of the tapped coil which doesn't exist on Lollar's standard or BB Jazzmaster pickups. You'd need something like the Novak JM-180 which is also a tapped pickup, essentially two P90s in one pickup.
      You could totally rewire the push-push for, say, an out of phase sound. It's the same DPDT (Double Pull, Double Throw) layout that you'd get with a Push-Pull or a Jaguar style switch

It feels like a quagmire, and I don't have someone that's as familiar with the various fixes as Mike is. I'd definitely have a Jazzmaster otherwise ny now. (or maybe a Jaguar?) i think the "knocking" is the bar hitting the bridge edge.
    i get the "knocking" sound on my Bass VI with stock parts so it wouldn't be the spring.
    It could be when Mike pushes down it's almost straight down parallel to the strings or even inwards a bit, angled towards the center of the body, therefore he catches the bridge edge on the way down, causing the knocking.
    When Ryan uses it he goes slightly more "away" from the strings (and bridge) so it clears without hitting anything until the tip touches the pickguard.
    It could be this because if it was the inner mechanism (including the new spring) it should sound whenever any of them push down to the bottom.
    also you wouldn't have the sound on your mastery because of the huge curve on the whamy bar (i think this is the reason for that); neither on Ryan's scrapwood thing (awesome btw) because he has full clearance for the whamy to go even "pass down the body".
    i hope this helps. you guys are both great, keep doing these colabs!

    Mike, didn’t you determine that the spring from a mastery trem worked well? Wonder if the folks at mastery would share their spring source.

      They are in the business of selling complete trem units, not individual springs to remedy competitors trem units.

      @@60CycleHumcast true! But what if you needed a “replacement” spring for your mastery trem 😉 JK, you make a good point. Cheers! Can’t wait for the summer season of “Guitar House”.. there will be a summer season right!? With even more guitar and even more house.

    Ryan check out the “Stretcha” to stretch strings. It’s like 3 bucks or something. I was hipped to it from a long video I watched by EVH’s guitar tech on how he prepped Eddie’s guitars.

    While this clearly sucks, I can only imagine this is exactly the way Leo Fender would have tried to solve things - with an off the shelf component put to ingenious use. Bravo!

    Someone might dill just the first quarter inch of the spring, for better fit. Leave the rest of the spring in tack.

    does this change your stance on buying AVRI tremelo systems? would cheap systems now with the upgraded spring solve the problem? or are there other reasons to buy the avri?

    • @Puisheen
      @Puisheen  Před 2 lety +5

      Oh I still prefer the AVRI I think. Panorama’s fun, and I like having it on one of my guitars, but it does feel and respond quite differently compared to the AVRI/Vintage units. Much tougher to get subtler dips and controlled pitch variance with how quickly the Panorama drops in pitch. I’ll have the Pat Pend or a Mastery over it any day, but it’s really fun to employ when I need “more”
