The castle was Philips Brewery in the 1950s (Yes it even had a roof then!!). After the brewery closed , Newport County Council as it was, would generously help themselves to any stones / tiles or anything they needed for jobs around the town. Hence the sorry state its in now. My Gran worked at the brewery, my Grandfather for the Council. A school colleague died in the Sainsbury's car park in a motorcycle accident. Before Sainsbury's was built there used to be a cold meat storage facility on the site, after that went derelict the amount of cats living in there just had to be seen!! The Spice Inn used to be known as the Harlequin Pub, hence the name of the roundabout, the top floor used to be home to the local boxing club. Wickes used to be Lex Mead ,The Austin/Rover and Triumph dealership. On the lower part of Barrack hill, the road used to go left over the 'tunnel ' which was a small bridge to take the road directly down to Malpas road. And the canal continued onto where the road is today, it's actually still there it's just in pipes under the road. The barracks used to have two black cannons outside of the gates, which were from King Henry VIII's Ship the Mary Rose . The Alltyryn Nature reserve used to be the Lido (outdoor pool) it closed in the 50s and left derelict . At the bottom of the hill discarded in bushes were the remains of the original lock gates. The lane at the top where that wall curves around, where you expected to see the dog walker used to the the Alltyryn Hospital entrance. The Lodge used to have the tiled entrance and a few walls, when I went there last I couldn't find a trace. The area at the top used to be known as Little Switzerland, the area in front of the 'compass' used to have short grass, as kids we used to roll down that hill I am shocked to see how much the trees and shrubs have grown, the views there used to be even more astounding!
