  • Mayim Bialik talking about attachment parenting, at an event for her new book "Beyond the Sling."
    Recorded on March 13, 2012, in Santa Monica.
    (Sorry about the slight jump in the video near the end; my camera hit its limit and stopped recording, and I had to start it again. Only missed a second or so, though.)

    If you check the breastfeeding guidelines for Canada, the US and the World Health Organization, they all recommend exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months (because their digestive system is not developed enough to handle food properly, they don't have the enzymes needed) and to continue breastfeeding until they are 2 or beyond. That's why it's so mind blowing to me that breastfeeding a toddler is seen as weird, wrong or even upsetting. In fact, the world average age for breastfeeding is 4!

      So true. I personally won't go past 1.5 or 2 years, but it is totally a culturally conditioned thing and not like a universal "truth."

    I have also found that traveling becomes easier with attachment parenting, and we take our kids everywhere as a result. A potty trained one year old (I know that's not officially attachment parenting) that is totally comfortable in a carrier and nurses to sleep means you don't need to carry diapers, a stroller, a pack and play, bottles, special food, etc... It's just like packing for an adult but their tiny clothes fit in a single pocket and you strap them to your back for ultimate mobility. When I showed up at my MIL's house with 2 kids and a backpack she was like, huh?!

    i love this video it's so healthy and refreshing to hear a grow women who wise and intelligent talking about emotions and feelings and rights kids have to just be is so important.
    The only thing i wish she said differently was homeschooling. I've known about it for a while and believe in it but i know that people who are unfamiliar with it need to have it explained that kids can get a good education, not just that there's lots of time to relax and play.

    I come from an east asian background and parents over there are not scared to have their babies/ enfants/ children sleeping with them all night. Or being with them all the time. Its a norm in my home country to wean a baby between 2 to 3 years of age. and almost every one breastfeeds

    do you know her kids? whats wrong with being "not exactly normal"? who do you think you are to judge someone like that, she's always said: "this worked for us, I'm not saying it has to work for you." BTW: Breast-milk is nutritional food.

    What exactly is meant by the term "natural birth"?

    • @lovepanic2738
      @lovepanic2738 Před 6 lety +1

      Natural birth is giving birth the way our bodies were made to give birth. No drugs, not being expected to be flat on our backs during labor or birth, believing in the power of our bodies that we can do what is natural.

    Mayim, what is EC?

    • @lovepanic2738
      @lovepanic2738 Před 6 lety

      EC stands for elimination communication. Basic premise is that the parent and/or caregiver pays attention to the infants visual signs of needing to poop or pee and is then able to take the infant to a potty instead of soiling a diaper. I have known people who's children have been able to use the potty by themselves as soon as the age of 10 months. I myself used cloth diapers from birth and then started part-time EC when my daughter was 11 months and she was out of diapers at 20 months.
      This is a nice site that I just found when I googled Elimination Communication.
      godiaperfree.com/elimination-communication/
      I was also a part of the wonderful group Holistic Moms Network that Mayim mentioned. They are a great resource and have many chapters around the country.

    • @kelseypelham4682

      Breastmilk is considered to be a "nutritionally-complete" food for the first year of life. Recommendations are to introduce pureed solids slowly, one at a time, at 6 months of age at the earliest. The main reason for this is to allow the baby to experiment with tastes and textures, not because they *need* it the way we need food. I have a friend who waited until 8 months to introduce them, I will introduce at 6 months but really just for "fun" because my daughter is interested and seems ready for some pureed foods (she is 5.5 months old now).
