  • Beekeeping winds down in the fall. Honey bee hives start to suffer from a lack of food sources in the fall. Today, I'll answer the question if bees can use the fall flow to draw out frames and add nectar.

I always take my supers off in August because I have never had anything but dwindling populations after middle of August. Thanks to Davids videos of feeding for robust winter bees. I stepped up my feeding this year and have colonies absolutely busting at the seems heading into October!

    @SMButler Před 9 měsíci +6

Wow! First year beek. Bought two nucs this past spring. By early August had lost both queens. Bought two mated queens and one hive rejected their queen. So combined that hive with the other five and now headed into winter.

The fall flow is very hit or miss. Enjoyed the video, David. Just got home from pulling supers. 14 Supers yielded 70 pounds. Not a strong flow at all. My area has had less than in inch of rain in the past 3.5 weeks. Really killed the flow.

Hey Brian, yea, I had one out of 10 or 15 year that I can remember a decent fall flow.

I don't feel so bad then. Last weekend I ended up pulling supers off of everything except for 2 colonies. Saturday they were bring in nectar and one of them had 2 supers almost full so I tossed on a third in between the two to see what they do over the next week.

I think one should always strive for perfection while realizing true perfection in every sense is not always achievable. I would never strive for less, although I would accept my best as long as I tried my best.

I started a hive in June from a 5 frame Nuc. the bees were not populated enough to really need to draw out new foundations so this was slow going. I was populated enough to put on a second broad box in Aug. but again the bees were not really wanting to draw new foundations. I had to keep feeding 1:1 as the bees were populating and going through all resources stored quickly. I did have 100 acre of soybean flowering during July and Aug. the bees quickly started recovering storage due to Golden Rod and Aster. I thought with all the different varieties of wild flowers this would be easy. Oops, the bees only use a few of these wild flowers. Thanks to all your videos with such a variety I was able to get through with a strong population of around 40 ---50,000 bees and 5 frames of capped broad to start into fall with.

With all of the knowledge you may accumulate, things change, and some of it will become obsolete.
The bees always have a choice in response to the environment, disease, parasites, pests, plentiful resources, resource dearth, and human error.
The variables to the art of beekeeping are enormous, but also fun to sort out.
Separate from the emotions, just a little bit, and consider that bees are a renewable resource that are more rewarding and challenging to keep, than to simply try to have.

David, using your Burns feeding system on a hive. I found a couple videos on your sugar water mixtures and why you use what. But I can’t seem to find what you put on the square opening on it. Can you point me to a video that talks about that? Thx

3rd year beek. harvested first fall honey. 2 supers yielded only about 12lbs. not sure it's worth it and the taste isn't that pleasing. maybe a thurs evening talking about how to store supers after the summer flow.

Thats close to the saying i know.
"You can ask 10 beek's the same question and get 11 different answers, all equally correct"
Just like social sciences, beekeeping cannot be applied exactly.
We just keep trying to get better.

Plant for fall blooms! Aster varieties are not only great for bees but butterflies. My bees are all over them. Plant natives and help your entire ecosystem, all pollinators will benefit.

Tried a light split in spring, and the split got robbed out. I learned not to leave the new split near the mother hive. Weakened the mother hive for the rest of the season.😢

My friend gave me a small swarm the he found in his trap. Quite small how can I give them the best chance of surviving the winter. I save two frames of honey I am planning on putting in the trap and wrapping with some insulation. Any ideas.

Goldenrod is a deathtrap for bees, I cut it down anytime I see it, There are much better native plants that flower at the same time of year, That aren't full of ambush bugs, I like planting New England Aster everywhere, as well as Chelone Glabra in any wet areas. At 4:42 you can see a yellow ambush bug on the goldenrod, creepy lil bee killers.
