The next Call of Duty, believed to be a Black Ops sequel set during the Gulf War, will be the first new entry in the popular online shooter to be on Xbox Game Pass. That’s according to a report by The Wall Street Journal today, which said the announcement will be made at Microsoft’s big annual Xbox Showcase in June.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as 2024's entry, made by Treyarch Studios, was previously reported by Insider Gaming. Microsoft teased an extended Direct for an unknown game directly after its June showcase, which fans quickly pieced together to be this year’s Call of Duty reveal. According to The Verge, Microsoft had until recently been debating whether to keep Call of Duty off Game Pass, or add it and increase the price of the service. It’s unclear if the new reporting by The Wall Street Journal means Game Pass will get another price hike in 2024, or if Call of Duty will be exclusive to certain tiers.
Microsoft didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Call of Duty costs hundreds of millions to make each year, and each year it sells tens of millions of copies. The cycle was so lucrative for publisher Activision that it slowly forced every studio it owned to contribute to making the hit series. When Microsoft finished its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard last year, whether Call of Duty would join Diablo 4 and other games on Game Pass was one of the big questions. - Hry

There are A LOT of people that buy and play COD every year and ONLY COD every year (if they pick up another game, it’s USUALLY like Madden or FIFA or NBA 2K).

You'd need to increase you subscriber base by 21 people per 1 subscriber just to make the same money. That's a projected subscription increase of 200 percent.

Now they get 70% cut from PC and 70 from PS5. Plus they get a huge chunk of micro transactions from other platforms. So they don't need to raise the price but if they do so wha, the new revenue will offset Xbox sales a..plus Xbox users will still pay for battle passes and dlc .
I think guys like you and DCG just don't understand how business works. Sony and MS take losses in areas in exchange for gains in others. That's why he thinks game pass isn't profitable when Xbox reports profits every year.

Like if you and I charge 50 cents per dollar fee and we do business just between us, we'd just be swapping the same 50c back and forth per transaction. This is a no brainer. If promoted right. Gamepass has. Halo. Cod, battlefield , gears, and not to mention fallout, doom, and soon hellblade and stalker later on. It may be the best value.

Oh it’s great news for gamers, but for MS business this is a very big gamble. You’re asking the same people who won’t buy a game to somehow support the games microtransactions which is where COD makes its money. Now I’d be alright thinking they would but the way COD skins work for example, they don’t carry over, so why the heck would anyone buy skins especially when they run 20 plus dollars? The same goes for the useless Battlepass which doles out points to unlock stuff very conservatively. I bought two Battlwpasses for COD and this is when It was all I was playing and still couldn’t unlock everything so I just said screw it and stopped buying battlepasses. I’m just warning you while this will be fun for gamers you’re going to pay a bigger price when Gamepass subs don’t change significantly and when the profit from microtransactions drops. Save my response and see me when this goes down, if I’m wrong I’ll gladly admit to that but I don’t think I am. With that said COD would be better served as a service unto itself like Fortnite where they don’t keep releasing games each year and maybe add a $10 a month charge to access every single cod map or game ever created. Cause call of duty won't make as much money. Instead of getting $70 for every copy of a game to getting a percentage. In gamepass there are no metrics for success like being able to count sales.
Xbox is at a point where anything they do is actually negative for them. All thanks to wellfare pass and their garbage exclusives or lack thereof.
Not putting Cod on gamepass would be weird since that's the gamepass model/promise. All first party games day one.
On the other hand, they won't gain any new subs since
-Cod isn't all that anymore (sbmm & cartoonish theme). The leaked patents show how the game matches you with easy players and then hard players for dopmaine drain. It also showed how there's real time adjustment of health, audio, aim assist, etc to keep that win-lose flow.
-Tons of new good quality live servive games (Helldivers 2) and even free ones (Xdefiant, it's actually good).
-Many new good quality games in general.
-Cod burnout
-Gta 6 is releasing next year. Meaning people will be busy playing that and then the online multiplayer for like the next half decade.
In the end, xbox gamers who don't play Cod will just have to pay more for no reason.
And Microsoft will just lose out on potential copies sold on Xbox. PC and PS players won't leave their platform due to their digital library. They'd just buy the game forever for 40-50 bucks more.

I don’t have gamepass but if they put every call of duty game on there I will get the service. Who cares what it costs? $100 a year is nothing, guys will buy dolls to place on their shelves for more money. $25 a month is nothing! $300 a year, I bought one classic video game for $400. My cell phone bill is $150 a month, I spend hundreds a month buying drinks and snacks at convenience stores. It’s $17, less than a $1 per day
How is this going to be a "tough sell"? Looking at the numbers, if you are a CoD player, Gamepass is the only way to play. You could get 3 months of Gamepass Ultimate, plus the Operator pack, and still not spend $100, which is what the Vault Edition will cost by itself on day 1.
You also get 500+ games to play, including Madden, NBA 2K, Fifa, the new soon to be NCAA football game (6 months after release), WWE 2K games, MLB The Show, basically all the games people buy on a consistent basis, all in one package, for less than $300 a year.
Least we forget the back catalog of ABK games that will also go into Gamepass, most likely this year.
I mean GP has been the best value in gaming for like 7 yrs and it hasn't really taken off. You really think CODs gonna turn everything around? Alot of ppl will just click the $70 buy option on their platform then switch to the least popular platform. Just my opinion.

Furthermore, Sony is no not going to be buying games studios if it turns out Sony's + Appollo's buyout of Paramount is accepted, and a regulatory approval process begins. Such a buyout will take well over11+ billion of Sony's money of which most is already borrowed to begin with. And that acquisition will be like how the ABK acquisition effected Microsoft's plans companywide where all other acquisitions and big deals were put on hold. Likewise, it will force Sony to be a good boy and not muddy the waters for a couple of years while that deal goes through the regulatory process in an industry (movie/tv) that is shrinking not growing and consolidation is actually an issue of big concern compared to the nonsense of what ABK dealt meant. Secondly, most of Sony acquisitions have been all about music. Music is growing. Sony gaming is not. Growth is not what is happening at Sony gaming.
BTW Helldivers 2 did not sell 15 million, it sold 12 million. I believe Palworld is the one that sold 15 million. Most of Helldivers (4 to 1) was PC. If anything, it showed Sony day and date on PC is needed for their content to survive the growing expenses they have. Heck PS5 couldn't even make a beloved AA Ratchet franchise profitable (all that talk form PS fanboys about we buy games and they couldn't even be bothered to make that game profitable). It took PC to make it slightly profitable in the end. All this may even push first-party go more to other platforms. Furthermore, if Sony is really doing as well as Dreamcast Guy says then why is there a need to push PC. Why is the new CEO of SIE a person with no gaming experience and the head accountant of Sony proper (i.e. Hiroki Titoki is the COO/CFO of Sony proper). You think Sony is not worried about gaming, but they put him in charge because of what reason? He was bored and wanted ore work or is it more likely he is there to course correct gaming's financials, cut fat, align mismanaged studio structure and games, realign to a bigger picture that includes a path similar to MS? I think denial is strong with this guy if he isn't seeing this. The industry has changed, and Sony is finally seeing the numbers are not what they projected for the gen. Remember this gen was going t kill the PS4 gen. The b lucky if they are within 5 to 10 million less sales at this point. MS will be the template to how Sony is moving. Whether it be putting content on other platforms at some point or even day and date. Like all those "exciting" GAAS games all the PS fans are waiting for (/sarcasm off) Sony may be willing to release all of it on Xbox as well or even pushing additional content to keep the game income up to drive OI growth to ease investors' fears not the current static path of growth or YOY decreases with realization numbers in the tank. Revenue means nothing if OI realization doesn't carve out values that follow suit. Sony's overall revenue is up only because they raised the prices on everything. Consoles prides up, Gaming prices up. Services prices all up. Why pound the chest about revenue when realization is in the toilet. And it will only get worse this year because Sony has diddly squat for first party until, at the very earliest, around March 2025.
More importantly about sales predictions for the year is BS explanation and one ignoring reality. Sony is not off a mere few hundred thousand from the original perdition. Sony originally predicted (to actual investors) sales of 25 million for the year not 21 million. What happened is Sony realized a few months month into that prediction that the sale trend showed numbers were nowhere near their expectations and so they restated that projection downward to 21 million. And still, they didn't meet that number. They are down 4+ million from the original projections.
Investors aren't looking at Sony and seeing a great investment. They stock is down by over 33% its high value in 2021. That is almost 50 billion in lost market cap in 2 1/2 years time. Meanwhile most of the rest of the tech world has been going gangbusters in growth. If investors saw a rosy picture for Sony gaming, they would not have dumped on the stock these past several years or even see the stock drop 17 billion (around 13%) in the last few months.
Also wait until Sony has to write off all those PSVR2 sitting in warehouses because no one wants anything to do with them, including Sony (i.e. no first party development for games other than a climbing simulator and add on to racing game).

I'm playing XB and PS and Switch so there are 3 choices and Steam is awesome so a fourth option but i just don't like Windows.. Linux is much better but requires a lot of time and effort to use for gaming and yeah PC hardware is way overpriced.. MS just wants to be the Netflix of gaming and is willing and able to make that happen.
