- This time I'm Carving a wooden Viking Cup - Expresso style. Yeah sure I stretch some historical truths, about the drinking habits of Vikings before battles. For those keen of eye - you may pick up that I started doing a pattern on the Viking cup and then scraped it, well I sanded it back and started again. That's the beauty of carving wooden objects they are forgiving.
I also got a new Arbortec Ball Gouge this week, so this was the perfect tool for the cup - I might do a review of this at a later date.
Anyway I am really enjoying making these videos and pushing my carving abilities, so if you could Like and Subscribe that would be awesome.😀

Cheers Bap, good to hear. I take ages trying to come up with the right music. Its all shot and edited on my phone as well. Phones are amazing these days. Hope you are well over in Ireland. Matt
I like this, the handle looks like a horses tail! Thanks Matt.
Yes, was just free forming this cup. 🐎
Beautifully done Sir😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Parabéns e maravilhoso este trabalho
thankyou
That racket in the background detracts from an otherwise great video.
That’s why I need a disc sander….
This is beautiful! 😍💕 I’ve been meaning to make one, I was going to make mine out of birch but I absolutely love the way this elm looks! 😍😍 I just wondered what you finished it with? I was a bit worried about it being safe when hot liquids are in it, does it leech out into the coffee slightly? Or is it a totally safe oil that it doesn’t matter even if it does leech out slightly? Also when you wash it do you need to keep topping it back up often? Thank you so much 🥰❤️💕 great video as always! 😘😘😘xxxxx
Hi. Sorry don't really drink much out of mine. I am not sure about leeching out. I heard somewhere that the light colored wood are better than dark woods, don't quote me on that though😁
@@MattCarves thank you sweetie 🥰❤️💕😘😘xxxx

Хорошее видео.А где взять такие инструменты?
great video ... what kind of varnish, oil or whatever, is it you are smear on cup the end ??
many many thanks for showing and please keep up the good viking work ;-))
I put beeswax wax on which I would not recommend as it just dissolved in the coffee. I am going to talk to a friend who makes kuksas. So will get some more info for you. I think birch is used a lot in cup making.
@@MattCarves thank you very much for the reply, yes for hot drinks does beeswax not work.
I'm really looking forward, to see which wax or varnish you can use to seal up the cup 👍
Hey Matt did you ever find out a good finish for hot coffee in this cup. I am learning a lot from your videos. Thank you my friend!!
Sorry it seems not many people know about this, it is a tough question - as in, the finish needs to be able to resist boiling water, which is a a hard thing to do. I think in my opinon if I was to make one it would be for myself as I would not want to risk other peoples health, and I would probably go for the least toxic wood I could find. I hear birch is the most often used, Look up finishing kuksa there is a lot of advice on this.
Thanks Matt for sending me this link to compare Kutzall Ball Gouge and Arbortech Ball Gouge. I have my cup half done and this video will help me out to finish the rest. I have to carve mine all out as I don't have a bandsaw.
Nice one John. Happy Carving 👍
Who builts the little Terrier Bit?
Hi I bought mine in New Zealand. But I believe they are made in the UK by this company www.kaizenbonsai.com/the-little-terrier-dhtm-the-ultimate-power-carving-tool-for-hobby-rotary-machines
What kind of finish did you use?
I just used some beeswax. I think lighter woods are used more for drinking vessels. check on the toxicity on the wood you are going to use. my cups tend to be ornamental. Happy carving
Hello, with what wood did you make it?
I used Rosewood. But it probably not the best for a drinking cup. I think birch is a better wood for cups.
Interessantes Video.
