All Tennessee based distilleries use the Lincoln County filtration process except for Pritchard’s who got an exception. Chances are that the TN whiskey was distilled at Tennessee Distilling, who is like MGP and produces whiskeys for numerous brands including Kirkland (Costco) and Heavens Door.

Yeah, you don't need to be in Lincoln County for it. I don't think Jack lets people source from them.

Not all “TN based” distilleries charcoal mellow, but if labeled “TN Whiskey”, then it must (except for Prichards which I didn’t recall - thanks).

Not whiskey-related, but Trader Joe's comes out with their "Vintage Ale" 22 oz corked bottles between Thanksgiving & Xmas every year. It's bottled by Unibroue in Quebec. If you like dark Belgians (like Chimay), it is a killer deal (~$7 or $8 per bottle).

Loved this. Cheap/basic bourbon is what I drink most. For the grocery store blind, I'd love it. Don't forget the Kroger Stone Hammer Bourbon. Maybe toss in the VOB 100 for a measuring stick. That said, I think the comparisons are best when the proofs are similar, otherwise the higher proof seem to have the advantage. Thanks for another great one, cheers.

  • @flcon16

I picked up the TJ's Tennessee once and it's probably the only whiskey I've ever just barely been able to finish. I ended up mixing it with coke like 10:1.
That TJ's Kentucky, though, it's great. The only reason I don't pick it up more is because I can get Binny's Clark & Sheffield. I know the market is small cause you can only get it in Illinois, but I'd love to see them compared.
The real star at Trader Joe's is their Mezcal at $21. It's a dang steal!
TJs does have a few more bourbons on the shelf that I haven't tried yet, as well.
I'd be happy to help source any if you're interested.

  • @MrHunterbuchanan

My dudes, the TJ's Kentucky Bourbon y'all were drinking is Barton! If you search for Bourbon Square Distilling, you'll find that it's owned by Sazerac, and it says on the label that it's distilled in Louisville. It's basically 4-year 90-proof Very Old Barton. I live in an area where we don't get VOB distribution, so I really like being able to pick this up when I wanna go cheap. The only downside is that my Trader Joe's also sells Wild Turkey 101 for $20, which is better in my opinion.

I checked the closest Trader Joe's to me - which is near my Total Wine store - and all they show on their Web site is the Kentucky bourbon. It's a $13 bottle, and if y'all like it, I just may grab one the next time I head that way. But as I type y'all haven't gotten to that bottle yet. 🙂
6:43 The Old No. 7 is thin and watery. It tastes like whisky, and that's about all you can say for it.
7:14 Dickel does use charcoal - only Benjamin Prichard is exempt. And if I'm not mistaken, there aren't any distilleries at all in Lincoln County these days.
    9:10 LOO-uh-vuhl, not Looieville. But y'all aren't southern so I'll forgive you. 🤠
I love it when I accidentally post a comment before I'm done. 😂
11:54 It looks like I'll be making my first ever visit to Trader Joe's.
12:25 I worked for Walmart, including Sam's Club, for years, and I never saw a store brand liquor. But I escaped from that evil place three years ago, so they might have one now.

For the grocery bargain tasting, someone might have said these but I’ll say again if not; TJ has another Kentucky straight bourbon made from Lux Row, about $15 for 4 year age statement at 80 proof.
Kroger has an in house brand called Tradewater made at Barton 1792 roughly $25 for 90 proof.
If your sourcing any bottles from Chicago, binnys has an in house brand called Clark and Sheffield that could be worth throwing in the ring, $17 for 90 proof

My guess for sourced TN Whiskey is usually Dickel or TN distilling out of Columbia. Jack isn’t known for sourcing. As has been noted TN Whiskey must be charcoal mellowed (Lincoln County Process) which describes the process but not a restriction to Lincoln county. Kind of like KY Bourbon doesn’t have to come from Bourbon County.

I just recently picked up Jack Daniels Bonded for $24.99 at my Trader Joe’s in Pasadena CA. I think I would rather drink that, over either of those. I’ve had the TJ’s Kentucky bourbon. It’s okay for mixing.

Trader Joe’s has some pretty cool items. It’s the first and last place I tried kangaroo meat. 😬

Fun episode, but I would never buy that stuff bc you can get into some serious bourbons for only another $5 to $10 dollars more, including Evan Williams BiB ($21), Maker’s Mark ($25) and several others.

Krogers has Stonehammer as a store brand bourbon and it’s actually pretty good. Thanks guys for the great videos!

I've heard good things about it and would like to try it. The two Krogers nearest me (central Indiana) allocated space on the shelf for it a couple of months ago, but there's never been anything there. The funny thing is both the "regular" and "sale" prices on the shelf keep changing even though they don't have the product. Current sale price is $19.99!

From what I can find says traders bourbon is distilled at the Barton distillery. Bourbon Square distilling company is a name Sazerac has been using over the years.

I have seen a Sams Club bourbon, and I believe it is sourced from 1792. I may be wrong because it was a one time offering, and I enjoyed it until it was finished. Lol

Crazy. I just picked these 2 up on a road trip. We have a Trader Joe’s here in Austin but we can’t sell liquor in grocery store in Texas. I think they are both solid but the bourbon was by far the winner between the 2. Also picked up their Scotch but it tasted rough!!!

I saw a write up on the web that it was Barton juice...they were pretty convinced it was. I've had this bourbon and didn't care much for it. I also don't care a lot for Barton either so.... I saw that Kroger had their brand of bourbon. No idea about how good it is tho.
