- Lindsey Stirling's new song Ice Storm just came out this week and I thought: could I learn to play a part of this song by ear?
I'm very reliant on sheet music and I'm not used to playing by ear, but let's have a go at it! I practiced for 3 hours and somehow I managed to get through the intro, verse, pre-chorus and the chorus (minus the very fast part).
So let's say there's hope for even the most rusted sheet music people. ;-)

I got very lazy since I leanrt how read. But recently I started trying to memorize pieces, so learn by ear is the best way for that. Except for ultrahard pieces, like Classical, or something with tons of notes.

Hi Marijke - I am from both teams. I, for one, am very comfortable playing by ear (depending on the instrument, of course). There are two instruments that I play comfortably, easily and strictly by ear: the diatonic harmonica and the diatonic pan flute. There are three things I find that are of the upmost importance for playing by ear: 1) be totally familiar with the instrument, 2) be totally familiar with the tune, and 3) the most important thing is knowing the FIRST note in which the tune begins. Give me only a minute to work out any possible kinks, and I'll be playing the tune with feeling, phrasing, vibrato and all that good stuff by ear as if I were playing it from sheet music all my life.
BTW: With all my other instruments, with possibly the exception of the chromatic slide whistle, I first learn the tune from sheet music. Happy fiddling! 😊♫ 🎻

I have NEVER strayed away from sheet music, especially for Lindsey, but I also almost got this one down by ear and it was also my first time learning by ear. ❤️🎻
Funny enough we Irish fiddlers learn most of our tunes by ear. learning by ear is actually the real old traditional Irish way of learning the fiddle. I had to learn by ear since i had no one to teach me. Which sounds weird since I'm an Irish man who lives in Ireland so you'd expect there would be someone I could learn from, but no i was on my own. I guess it all boils down to how well you know your instrument and your determination to keep playing. The best way to learn a tune by ear is get it stuck in your head and play it over and over again and it will just transfer onto the fiddle.
Just starting my journey on the violin and will be learning primarily by ear. I do read treble clef easily except high ledger lines as i played clarinet MANY years ago. 62 so should be a fun workout for this old body and brain. Can’t bear Lindsey Sterling though, kind of feel she’s only really known for the ‘moves’ and not taken seriously as a player - always the risk you take i guess.
Awesome you started to play too! I really like what Lindsey Stirling does and how she performs it, but I like classical too. You could buy a violin lesson book and work it through to get the basics down, so you can read and play by ear as well.

I’m team By Ear! Really nice job figuring this out. I totally guessed a Lindsey song ;) It was fun seeing your process; very behind-the-scenes-y. I do this too and watching you felt like watching myself haha. P.S. I’m also team Sheet Music as odd as that sounds. I do really well if I know what a song sounds like and then see the sheet music; those situations I tend to play the song pretty well the first time I try it.

(Improvisation isn't as easy as you'd think.) Using your ear is a skill set that takes practice. You have mad skills 😂. I like the Ben Sounds track lol.

I love your willingness to go out of your comfort zone and try something challenging... I'm a guitarist and my personal approach would be to analyze the chord structure and everything seems to fall into place after that... Once I know what the chords are, I can manipulate the positions on the neck to my advantage and add some flavor... But your videos are great and I always enjoy your hard work and dedication to your instrument...
Thanks a lot! On guitar, chords make sense indeed. On violin there's most often a melody, so I look for patterns and repeats in the notes themselves. But I did figure out an E chord. 😏✨

Team sheet music. I‘m very good at sight reading. However, I can also play ear and can copy pieces from listening.

Thank you! I had time for this one, work starts again next week. The next editing job will be the Jurassic Park, so no recording for the next two weeks, except for my own collab part.
I prefer playing by ear...or what you're doing, ...figuring out the basics of it. Then you'll already know the main gist of the song once you have the sheet music before you. (When/if there is sheet music). I also have a pair of the exact same Sennheiser headphones!! How cool, eh? Heheh 😉
I guess it's handy when improvising or jamming together, to be able to pick up and repeat a melody on the spot. My first teacher actually warned me not to listen to a new piece first, at least not to an extend where I would practice it by ear instead of counting the beats.

I always need to hear first what I‘m about to play. I just can‘t sight read fast enough and especially the high notes…like…I can‘t even count the lines fast enough to know which note it‘s supposed to be 😂 very annoying.
It's useful indeed! My first teacher did warn for that though, because then you tend to practice a piece by ear and not by counting the beats.
I sometimes write the note names above very high notes and play it an octave lower first, to hear what it sounds like.
@@MarijkeViolin yes, I always have to piece (haha) everything together which can be pretty exhausting. I also write the notes‘ names and play them an octave lower but the first time reading the score and figuring out all the high notes is often soooo annoying. I hate learning a new piece until I‘m far enough in to actually know what it‘s supposed to sound like 😂 currently working on the Mendelssohn violin concerto btw, so lots and lots of high and quick notes 🥲
