HyYeeeLLLOOO! So for the past year or so I've been seeing the stinking CUTEST mushroom hats floating around ye olde internet, so I wanted to give it a go! I had some leftover foam from one of my projects so I figured why not!
ANYWHO I hope you enjoy and I love you all!!

Botanist here: never EVER trust any of those apps to identify an edible mushroom
How do you find a local mushroom expert? What’s the official name? Are the books more helpful than the apps?
Mycologist :)
Ok so what can we trust?
@@KTCC13 If you really want to go foraging for mushrooms you should go with an expert who can show you the subtle differences between the edible and non edible mushrooms, because they can look really similar.
Yep! That's a sure-fire way to get mushroom poisoning! The good ones and the bad ones look so similar.
I feel like you could make a hat stand for this that looks like the base of a mushroom so that when you're not wearing it, it would just look like a giant mushroom in your house 🍄 ~*whimsy*~
Agree!!
Great idea!
oh my God, Yes! :D
If she does this it should definitely be a miniature house for whimsical forest creature.
I was also thinking this!
I really love that you painted the mushroom hat brown. It's the first I've seen so far that doesn't look like a toadstool and you put so much effort into the details. It looks like a real mushroom plus you could wear it everyday with any outfit without having to worry about matching colours.
I love that for everyday wearability your main concern is colour compatability! 🙈😊🍄
Yes, it bothers me too that most of these hats are only fit for celebrations or other special occasions. This, however, is definitely an outfit that any forest child could wear to school. Love the inclusivity!
@@derepischekeks1475 ahaha right. I think it is so adorable and so fun how everyone’s style has different parameters for what makes it feel like them lol Color is something that tends to be extremely mismatched within my outfits lolol
Yes, this is my favorite video of Rachel’s. It came out great!
Rachel, spraying highly toxic adhesive indoors: "Should I be doing this outside?" Me, screaming at my computer: "YESSSSS!!!" But, the mushroom cap: Adorable!
I was looking at that candle behind her lmfao
Girl needs to at least get/use a proper mask.
That stuff is a menace. We had a special flowbooth in college just for spray adhesive just because of how disgusting and toxic it is. It gets everywhere and smells horrendous.
I remember when I first tried crafting and didn’t use proper ventilation as I worked. It was when I first tried contact cement. I thought, surely an open window in my bedroom would be enough ventilation. I was feeling the effects of my decision real quick.
I also feel like she should have not mixed up that drywall compound goop in her nice food mixing bowls but OK
My first thought: “Yep, that checks out.”
My second thought: “How has Rachel not already made a mushroom hat?”
Knowing she's basically an autumn fairy living amongst Humans, yeah, that she hasn't made a mushroom hat until now feels wrong.
🍄🍄🍄
@@Nikki-tx6kh came here to say something similar. Also nice name 👀
It was them darn mushroom sleeves she did 1st that threw her i reckon lol
“Drought for 2 months”
Me: laughs/cries in southwest USA.
OK, but this really needs to be a whole outfit! Like a frilly dress, or puffy pants and puffy-sleeved top with a vest or something, with cute fairy shoes and a satchel of spores🥺
She already has a mushroom dress
@@Red-jl1qr Maybe one for more formal occasions? Or do a 'Weekend Cottage' ensemble.
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
She made a shirt or dress with terrarium sleeves. Would have been great with the hat.
I was so thinking the same thing, 😹😹😹 I think it would make a great outfit😊😊
but most of all I wish I could just go out and pick mushrooms I am not able to do that as there are no edible mushrooms that grow wild in Australia that I know of.
Umm Willow Pill already did this!
The book Mushrooms Demystified is the go to book that a lot of biologists use for mushroom ID! It's definitely the best one I've used!
thanks!
This will completely depend on where in the world you live though... One of the most poisonous mushrooms where I live looks exactly like a very popular edible mushroom in East Asia, so immigrants or tourists from that region who weren't aware that mushrooms aren't the same everywhere unfortunately have been poisoned.
@@MajaBiana Good point! Mushrooms Demystified was written for western north america iirc, and is a truly excellent reference if you live in that part of the world!
“I don’t need the gym: I craft” would make the perfect shirt saying 👚 👕
Maksy Merch - YES!!!

I had the same thought when she said that!
Make this t shirt Rachel. I’ll buy it.
Yes, yes, yes, we need🙏👍🏼👍🏼
This is so cute!! Now you just need to make a ‘hat stand’ that looks like a mushroom stem so you can use that hat as decor when your not wearing it 🤣
brilliant
❣️😄 Oh I would LOVE to see a video with this content!
oh yes!!
I like!
Yes!
Mascot/furry costume creator here! I recommend finding a way to seal the raw foam and lining the head hole. Raw upholstery foam yellows and deteriorates over time when in contact with moisture (it also molds very easily, and I don't think we want any real spores on your head lol). I recommend using neoprene or lycra for the head hole, and for sealing the foam itself you can actually use plastidip as you would for EVA foam. Then it would keep those accidentally mushroom ridges you got during the carving progress. It looks incredible I have never thought of using upholstery foam like this!
I was wondering if plastidip would have worked! I don't now why but for a while I have been thinking "what if I sprayed plastidip on _____?"
Tfs for Rachel that would have taken research lol. She's a big picture creator.
Another costume maker here. Lycra would make the head hole slippery for such a heavy hat. There has to be something else.
Also would like to add that an alternative to stinky slow-drying spray glue is hot glue. Put anything you are trying to dry in front of a high-powered fan. Lasko's Wind Machine is a good one!
@@tigristhelynx7224 good point on the lycra. I typically use neoprene but with a lot of the current dye issues I didn't want to recommend it. That would ruin a wig.
@@jayneterry8701 But these tips are so helpful, and who knows, she might try diff things mentioned here, not to mention others who read this and want to try. I love the sharing going on here.
“I hate the fact that being a tornado has its consequences” is one of the most relatable things I’ve ever heard 😭😂
That laugh when you first put the foam on your head and saw how cute it was going to be is my FAVOURITE part of a project 😂 It's when you realize it's all coming together!
I adore the geographically accurate mushroom choice.

"I've done [paper mache] a whopping total of once." Didn't realize the pumpkin lady was so bad that the memory of making it had 100% yeeted itself out of Rachel's head.

@@lainie193 She used paper mache on the Demogorgon dress much more recently.
I love how unpredictable you got with your videos lately, each Friday I'm like "I wonder what we're getting served this week" and you never ever disappoint
I did a project on bleeding fairy helmets once! They’re really cool. When the fruiting bodies are damaged, they leak a red latex that looks just like blood! They’re purple-pink in color, and are bioluminescent, but not an amount detectable to human eyes. Very nice.
please never ever stop including these cosy little rain/nature moments, they're so soothing i love em
Yesss everytime Rachel posts even a short insta story with rain I'm like 3 hour version upload pls, also her house and land is so aesthetic that looking out a window with heavy rain and storm sounds, sounds like the best napping material ever.

This oversized mushroom hat still fits your new “Borrowers” aesthetic. You could make a whole autumn nature themed “Maksiatures” outfit. Giant acorn bag, giant color changing leaf skirt, giant sunflower sun hat, giant apple skin for the shirt inspiration, etc. 🍂
I bet Nick is so happy you now do these crazy messy projects in the barn not the house now! Frodo needs a mushroom bag to match now dude xx

@@catstreat9434 Unfortunately I have experience with reporting comments to YT. The company does not respond, act or offer any kind of feedback. There's even a daily limit to how many comments you can report in a day.
I live in Ottawa, Canada and you may remember that we lost the entire month of February to an illegal occupation that calls itself the 'freedom convoy'. They were/are anti-mask, anti-mandate, replace-the-elected-government people who were big fans of Jan 6th. Over a dozen of their channels popped up over night. They were monetized within days. They actually got the double-ad treatment. The live stream chats were full of threats to burn the entire city down and worse. To call it hate speech only begins to cover the depth and breadth.
You Tube did nothing. Except collect the revenue. The channels are still up, still making revenue, still making threats against the city. There is no one watching the shop.
Meanwhile that brilliant young sews-it-all-by-hand historical sewist, V. Birch (sorry, bad with names) is under a lifetime ban for trying to raise funds for an Aboriginal re-housing initiative. There is no appeal process.
You Tube does not respond to reported hate speech or terrorists threats. I'm afraid to say, they won't do a thing about the porn-spammers if it's making them revenue. Each interaction feeds the algorithm...

I got super excited thinking "omg Rachel finally bit the bullet and went to a professional to get her hair color corrected, it looks so good!" And then in a shocking anime betrayal you bought a wig. Well played madam. The hat looks fantastic! It was a fun idea to make it look like your every day mushroom. I think it would actually look really awesome with a green dress to mimic grass. Also, I now have this mental image of you has a ruthless business woman who pretends to be a quirky millennial and truthfully I would still support you if only for your dedication to the bit
Your hat is ADORABLE! Also, I love that you remember about Half-Life. (I'm an Eastern European and I could tell between the edible and the not-so-edible shrooms while you picked them. Psychedelic’s definitely have potential to deal with mental health symptoms like anxiety and depression, I would like to try them again but it’s just so hard to source here
Psychedelics are the reason why i didn’t take my life when i was at my end. I was stripped of my ego and saw the beauty of life and interconnectivity and even though i still battle anxiety and depression, I’m doing better everyday and will never think in such a self destructive way again.
LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life. I became a better version of myself
This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body. A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. Now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before."

Fun fact! Rachel's mushroom dress video from a while ago inspired me to make a whole mushroom costume for Halloween, and I ended up making a hat like this. I'm so excited and intrigued to see her process! 🍄💜
Oh cool! My friend did that too :)
My kiddo loved watching this video with me, and she wants a mushroom costume now. 😊 This was lovely!
All of Rachel’s crafting give me “whisky grandpa, but make it Jenna marbles humour”
Not the mushroom hat we asked for, but the mushroom we needed
note on the smoothing process of the paper mache clay: as Jonni also notes in her videos, the easiest way to get a smooth surface is to not sand it, but wait till it's dry and then put on a thin, second layer of just the dry wall joint compound over it! it will fill all little bumps and unevenness without any effort at all and leave a super smooth surface ^^ i've tried it out myself and it works like a charm!
The look on my face when she made the goop with her everyday cooking utensils. Girl, (please) get thee a crafting kitchen set secondhand! 😮😅😂

At least in this case, none of the ingredients are toxic or harmful substances you don't want to expose food equipment to... or anything that will ruin appliances, as long as it's cleaned up right away.

As a Graphic Design student I definitely recommend using spray adhesive outside next time lol. We use it all the time for projects and it's nasty stuff. Loved the spontaneous project Rachel!
And wear a mask
I literally got asthma for a week after using spray adhesive, #artstudiolife and I don't even have asthma. I learned my lesson. The stuff works but use it with proper ventilation or outside.
And maybe put out the candles since it’s aerosol and can easily float over the flame behind you!🤯😱
Love the video though and all your little talking and singing to yourself as usual. The outtakes were all very relatable❣️
Thank you for the rain sequence and mushroom hunt. 💖🍂🍄✨
Really! You don’t want those particles in your lungs, much less the chemicals that they float on. I’m just •stunned• that you didn’t read the precautions on the label, Rachel dear! 😜
Okay, this is so perfect! It's like the stars aligned! I have a D&D character (Druid) who wears a mushroom cap for a hat. It's so amazing to see how the concept would look in real life. You're incredible!
The part about being chaotic and pretending it's an act hit so hard. I have a toddler now and people think baking looks messy (both the kitchen and the food) because she's 2 but it would look almost exactly the same if it was just me 😅
I'm from one of those European countries in which we pick up forest mushrooms and eat them (the edible ones, obviously) so I definitely recognize yours to be a mushroom and I think it's really cute that you went for a different kind, I really like it this way and I also like the burned edges because wild mushrooms often get some spots. One idea is also to make a white hole on top to make it look like a snail ate part of it! I really love the video, made me smile!
Oooh, she could make a snail to go on it!

Hi Rachel! I have been sick for the past two months and watching your videos have helped me to relax and distract my mind from all the crap. So just know that your floortrolling really, actually helps people❤️
There were so many mushroom hatted people at Washington's Renaissance Faire this year! Easily dozens of them and each had a fun spin on their fungusness.
I went this year! I loved the mush hats so much I picked myself up one from a vendor this year
We had a lot here in California at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire! Seems 2022 was the year of mushroom looks at faires! Everyone was so cute and sadly by the time I found what booth most people bought their hats from (though some were home made), they had long since sold out.
A lot of mushroom hats and mushroom outfits every weekend at the faire in Michigan so far. :) It's always so fun to see everyone's take on the mushroom hats.
Also here in the Ohio Renaissance Festival! I actually asked someone what was going on since I saw so many when I hadn't seen any at previous festivals
I love that
Rachel is single-handedly creating the aesthetic of forage-core with these projects 😍😍
That's so cute! You could make fabric covers to change it up whenever you want to, they'd look like large shower caps
I love the way the “burned” part looks! What a fun project ❤
As an amateur mycologist and biologist, the mushroom collection montage was *chefs kiss* so many good shrooms out there
Fun shroom fact: a lot of Boletus species will change color if you poke them/bruise them!
velvet might work well as a lining for the head hole--it is fairly common, as it gives the hat a little grip. You may still need a tie of some kind, if you're wearing it with a wig, but it will give more security to hair.
The photoshoot at the end was flipping cute! Like a mushroom fairy!
It turned out so well! Your craft skills are top notch and also so is your Jennifer Coolidge impression 👌
I love the mushroom hat just as much as I love the casual (but pretty impressive) Jennifer Coolidge impersonation Rachel slips in every now and then. 10/10 content.
hey, i looked around and didnt see anyone comment this so i might as well.
For anyone that wants to pick mushrooms like rachel, make sure you have a pocket knife or some siccors with you, and cut the stem at the base, even if its easy allways try to not rip it out with the little "roots" like shown in the video. These roots grow new mushrooms. If done correctly the same type of mushroom will grow over and over every year on the same spot you gathered them from.
(if ripped, you can slowly erradicate all the mushrooms from growing in these places, because they cant properly spread)
Source: Grandparents that live in the forest, and that pick mushrooms for eating every autum witha set route with all the places they grow on. Also seen on some norwegian documentaries.
Its quite painfull to see the mushrooms being ripped out :"(
But i loved the video either way, such a fun and cute craft, you did great Rachel!
From what Ive read that is mostly a myth. Cut or pluck it doesnt really matter in terms of regrowth as the mycelium is in the ground.
@@TallTeenTurtle Yes, this. The research suggests it doesn't matter much.

"I don't need the gym, I do craft" must be the truthest words ever spoken.

"I don't need the gym, I do crafts" definitely needs to go on some merch, it's perfect
Thinking things should be easy and having them take 10x longer than they should is me most of the time, so I feel you on that. The finished mushroom hat is so cute though, so the time definitely paid off!
No, definitely asked telepathically. So kind of you to oblige
I took a stab at identifying some of the 'shrooms because I can never leave a mystery alone! :D
Guesses in order of appearance: 17:53 'Yellow Dust Amanita' ; 17:56 'White Dapperling'; 18:01 Boletus innixus (as Rachel says); 18:04 'Frosty Funnel'; 18:30 'Pink Domecap'; and Entoloma cetratum (no fun name found)
the English names for mushrooms sound so fancy and proper while the Russian (my first and main language) sound v simple. for example: fly agaric = мухомор (muhomor) which means "fly killer". some others are сыроежка - "one that could be eaten raw", лисичка - "little fox", рыжик - "little ginger" (as in hair color), белый - "white", подберёзовик - "under a birch tree" and зонтик - "little umbrella". I don't know the English names for these so I'm sorry 😭
Looks like the frosty funnel may actually be a russula?
Genuinely love how she made this so much harder than it needs to be 🤣 Of the tutorials I've seen for making mushroom hats, they just make the frame/base of cardboard and then cover it with fabric. Quick (ish) and easy

Aww, I'm sure Massachusetts has all kinds of cool mushrooms! I think an inky cap or shaggy mane would make a super cute hat. Fun fact, inky caps are edible but turn toxic and potentially deadly when consumed with alcohol. The fact you keep trying new things AND you do it on camera is so inspiring to me because I have such a strong fear of failure and anxiety about performing something I'm not a hundred percent sure of in front of other people.
