In today's video I share with you a week where I tried to live the perfect zero waste lifestyle in Northern Michigan. There are some sustainable swaps that I love, some zero waste items I don't love so much and a few I regret buying. I hope you find this video helpful and don't make the same mistakes as I did! Eco minimalism is already a huge part of my life, but this week I wanted to see where my zero waste journey could take me especially as it's Earth Month.

I hope you enjoy today's video!! It was a lot of fun and thought provoking! If you want to see more daily content follow me on IG: bit.ly/3hBsY6E
Your fiancés knife skills are impressive. You both absolutely glow in each other’s presence 💕
He has been practicing a lot for years! He’ll be absolutely chuffed to hear your compliment ❤️❤️
I remember reading somewhere that buying tinned or jarred cooked chickpeas is more sustainable then buying dry ones in bulk, because of the energy consumption for cooking them is huge when you're home cooking small quantities at a time (unless you're cooking lots - but i cook just for me- or maybe if you have a pressure cooker I guess). There so much complexity when you really think about it!
It is. However I think it's about doing the best you can. Not being perfect. So if you buy uncooked chickpeas but get them from a refill shop your doing your bit re packaging waste. As long as we try and improve where we can when we have the information. ♥️😊👍
Cooking up the whole pack and then freezing in portions can be a good idea 🙂
@@sue15cat do cooked chickpeas freeze well?
I found locally grown dried chickpeas. They're slightly more expensive but I buy them in bulk and we cook roughly 3 cans worth each time. So I figured it's a win.
@@amaris9117 Yes they do, as do most pulses. I put them in a tub in the freezer and shake them a few times as they freeze to keep them free flowing. Or you can bag them up in whatever portion size you usually use.
I appreciate your view and understanding how expensive food is in the US and how difficult it can be with out a vehicle. Parts of my childhood were impacted by these and the privilege I have now is something I see every day and wish more people would as well.
this was such a well-made video, one of your best. the editing and shots are great and your entire journey figuring out sustainability of everyday essentials is so interesting to watch
Can't wait for the next meal prep video. Thanks for another great video.
I was born and raised in Michigan, so I totally relate to some of the struggles you mention in this video. It's such a beautiful state!
On the fuel consumption - we go once a month to our local zero waste shop and buy in bulk but we are super blessed to have cellar and pantry, sizeable pantry at that, to store things in. So this is another thing to take into consideration. If you are in a tiny place in a middle of nowhere, it really is hard to be even low waste.
What a beautiful and well done video. Really made me reflect on how I can be more sustainable. I already try but when you talked about food it made me think about it even more.
Happy Visa anniversary! 🎉 Even if celebrating anniversaries is always fun, I hope you both don't have to celebrate it a second time and I am crossing fingers that you'll get the Visa soon.👍🏻You're so sweet being together. You're both "shining" even more when the other is around. And to be honest: 8 years of such kind of long distance relationship and Covid does already show how you're both working on the relationship and appreciating your partner. Regards from Germany Stephanie
Thank you for this beautiful video. It shows us the amazing nature we need to preserve. So inspiring!
Brilliant as always good luck x
omg this is so exciting!! i'm actually from northern michigan and just getting to see you here was unbelievable! literally screamed when I saw oryana because I also shop there!! anyway thanks for a great video and all you do for the sustainability community
The Field Roast Chao sliced cheese (regular white and a tomato cayenne flavor) is really good, too, and pretty widely available in the US
I’m reading All We Can Save right now too! There’s a lot of great content and perspectives in there. Some things I roll my eyes at a little, but mostly good stuff, haha. Although my cat chewed up the cover when I left it out and the irony of the title and now holey cover is not lost on me….
Lovely video! Your content always makes me smile.
Love your videos !!! also incredible editing ! 👍🏻🌎
I really relate to your current situation. My previous home was in a small city where everything was in walking distance to me or with public transit. It was easy to buy bulk and have access and there were even cool programs like a carshare. I've since moved states to be with my bf and there you have to drive everywhere. I dislike driving and it feels less time and energy efficient. It certainly makes sustainability feel harder when there is less accessibility!
From what I know (living in Germany) is that some German studies/analyses have shown that going to the supermarket by car actually produces more emissions than the fact if you buy something what is not seasonally (as long as it wasn't brought to your country by plane but by ship or on the streets). That's why I think going to the 25 minutes away shop instead of the 45 minutes away shop actually really is the better option. :)
that one second clip of you guys dancing on the beach made me tear up heavy.... thank you for sharing
I really like how you talk about the reality of where you live. We live in the country and are lucky to have a lot of farms and market growers around us. We are in canada so eating more seasonal is a big part of being sustainable. More fruits in the summer more tubers and squash in the winter. We can buy a lot of locally grown food withing 25km from us. But its 30 min. Drive to our typical grocery store and about an hour to a bulk store. We do go to bulk sometimes when qe have to go to town an hour away but for us it's more sustainable to buy from the small farms and the normal grocery store. Great video! 😍 we also grow a lot of our own food and I encourage anyone to try growing some food whether your in an apartment on a balcony or have a small front lawn, grow something!!!
Good luck with the visa journey, I know from personal experience how frustrating the waiting can be. My now husband is from Maryland and we did long distance since 2011 finally him getting a UK visa in 2015 and citizenship last year.
I NEED to know your bagel recipe! They turned out so perfect! 😍 😋
Here in North Texas we had our earth day festival and I found a small zero waste shop that runs her business at farmers markets. I was so happy to see that. I have also quit drinking coffee. I drink green tea now (not any better) but I have very recently found out that Yaopon Holly is a native tree here and it’s leaves contain caffeine!!
Thank you ✨ I enjoyed your video 🧚🏼♀️
What I got from this video, Immy, is… mindset, learning, and conscious effort. In every aspect of our daily living there is opportunity to change the world if we take the time and effort to shape our minds, expand our knowledge, and build habits that are planet-kind. Your content is such a great vantage point for all of this. Amidst the learning, you also offer inclusivity and sharing which collectively increases positivity, optimism, and momentum in this sustainability movement. This human generated momentum is the most powerful impetus of all. Thank-you for all that you do. You amaze me and inspire me. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary💕🏊♀️
Your comments are always a joy to read ❤️🥰
Wonderful video! And happy Visa anniversary:D
Great video as always .. wishing that you get your vids ASAP....keep these COMING. Love your content 💓
I really appreciate seeing you try to live “perfectly” in the Midwestern United States. I lived for 4 years in rural Iowa and there were no package-free shops, and very little food was locally grown. And our town even stopped their recycling program.
Same here. We had just gotten curbside recycling in our little town, but that went away with the pandemic and there doesn't seem to be any effort to bring it back. Sad.
Oh wow your in Michigan now! Congrats on coming to the US! I'm in a state over in Ohio!
What a beautiful spot! Happy anniversary, and I hope you two can get the visa issues solved soon. My (American) son "imported" his woman from the UK, and I love her like my own. It's been around 20 years for them, I think.
Haha I live Michigan I can tell where you at by the water. My the way this time year in woods muster greens are poping, spring onions, Dandy lions, other greens you can eat for free. No mushrooms yet. If ask around you see where local Amish market are. Omg your walking past food grrr. You can make pine tea. Grrr wish could give you more tips. Dwarf mellow growing and great for tea.
I'm moving more aware from drinking coffee, but I'd love a video talking about the impact of matcha and how and if its possible to drink that sustainably
I buy most of my produce at the local farmers market. This means that I eat seasonaly and use ftesher ingredients in the foods I make.
I love Earth Month, I love your content, I love your Premieres & Live Chats, and most of all… I love that you are perfectly imperfect... and that you share your Eco Minimalist lifestyle with honesty, creativity, exuberance, and flair. AND… even more so… that you encourage sharing and learning (and wild swimming 🏊♀️). So much inspiration!! 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary🌸
Well said, Mary, and I totally agree! ♥

@@marycharlebois6627 Thank you! ♥ I always love your comments, Mary. You have such an awesome outlook on life, much like Immy. It is a pleasure to connect with you and a pleasure to watch Immy's videos. ♥♥ May you move into this new week with joy. :)
Are you going to be in S.E. Michigan any time soon? If you are and have any kind of meet up, please post it! I would love to actually meet you!
Hi Immy great video. I live in the USA and I feel groceries are more expensive over here. My husband and I watch a lot of CZcamsrs in England that do food hauls and your groceries are a lot cheaper.❤
Thanks for another thoughtful video Immy :) I would love to see a reading list of climate/sustainability books you've been reading lately! Also, completely off topic but where did you get the blue two-piece swimsuit from?
Thank you so for your video love it
@sustainably vegan - Immy, I am learning so much from your videos! Do you recommend any books which introduce "every-day sustainability"? - starting with the basics? I would love to learn more in terms of the positive impact I can make - even if small shifts to begin with. Thank you x
This isn't really related to the video but I just wanna say you look radiating💕 you look so happy
I'm from a small city in British Columbia, Canada, where you absolutely need a car to get around and do everything. I never thought much of it, but then I moved to the UK with my husband in 2016 (Chester, Cheshire), where he is doing his phd, and I haven't driven a car at all since moving here. I absolutely love it. I walk and cycle everywhere I need to go around town and I can easily take the train or bus to anywhere outside of town. We are moving back to Canada in the autumn after my husband finishes his programme and I am honestly quite anxious about having to rely on a personal vehicle for transportation. The town we're from (and moving back to) is so spread apart that it isn't even really cycle-friendly. Plus, where we are going to be staying is up on the mountain. It's absolutely drop-dead gorgeous there, but the reliance on cars is not ideal.
Hello from the wilderness of northern BC where it is absolutely not possible to live without a vehicle. Sad, but true. I understand your dislike of car reliance (although I, personally, have small truck reliance.) It is stunningly beautiful where I live, but we have to do a lot of driving to get to work or go for groceries etc. We grow and preserve a lot of our own food and we have a winter root cellar for veggies. This really helps us to live sustainably and reduce our waste. I hope your move back to Canada (BC?) is a smooth one, and that you settle in nicely. Welcome Home. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary
I have just moved to the west coast of Cumbria and it looks like my nearest zero waste shop would be in Carlisle, over an hour away. For me it feels like that much travel would be much less sustainable (both environmentally and financially) than just doing my best with the mainstream supermarkets near to me. So that's what I do, buying different things from different supermarkets according to which products are more sustainable where. I will also be setting up some subscription services soon, such as Who Gives a Crap! (provided that they deliver here, which isn't guaranteed).
You could also consider buying big bulk bottles of dishwashing liquid/ hand soap/ bodywash/ washing powder etc. and then put the massive bottles in the basement or somewhere and just fill up your small ones as needed. Same would probably work with massive bulk bags of rice etc too. And like you said it’s not about being perfect, but it actually can be really fun to find alternatives for the things that always go with a lot of plastic if you don’t have Good shops close to you. And then you can buy fresh produce etc in your local shops :)
@@numivis7807 absolutely, I do as much of that as I can (except my house is quite small so not a lot of storage space!) I'm planning to speak to the local greengrocer soon and see if I can arrange to go at the end of the day sometimes and buy fruit and veg that would otherwise go to waste
@@alisonbirchall262 oh yes if you don’t have Storage than the big bags would be a problem :D the idea with the left over veggies is great, I might try that as well
you know these packs of spinach, berries and other veggies and fruit that you get in the frozem section in the supermarket? Find those that are in cardboard. You got yourself seasonally harvested, but still good produce in conpostable packaging.
Oh my gosh! Ive been there! Thats crazy i wont say the name but dang! Ive eaten that vegan peanut wrap! Issa good. Its so weird because i go there once a month or so. And this is basically my low waste struggle, so weird to see u try it out!
I got a chuckle from your slightly reddened nose! Yep, you are experiencing Northern Michigan spring!
Haha yes the weather has been very up and down ❤️
I downloaded an app that gives you multiple things you can do, from big changes and smalk changes. From buying clothes 2nd hand to letting your laundry air-dry. It really helps me make more sustainable choices.
What's the app?

Immy, I love this video and so glad you are spending time with your boyfriend (fiancé’ I think?). I’ve been watching your channel for four years and it has made a big difference in my life. It’s so cool to me that you live in Michigan again, and it’s something I can relate to since I also live in Michigan. I started a soap shop that has sustainable practices but it is not fully a zero waste shop. I would love to get some advice on what I can do better to improve the business with sustainability but still be a steppingstone for people who want to make small steps to the change. Idk if you will even look at this comment but if you do I would love some advice and ideas! -Danielle
Hi there… I just wanted to say that I think it’s really cool that you started a soap shop. Everybody uses soap, and hand made soap is may favourite. I buy handmade package-free soap at my local health food store and I really love it. I wish you all the best with your new business. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary🧼
Side note: I live near Chicago if you want to meet-up! Lol (I bet that’s way too far🤪)
Where did you get your nails done?

Where is your beautiful bathing suit from? 😻 you look great in it!
Hi Immy, beautiful surroundings and lovely to be with your boyfriend! I noticed that you have gel nails in the video. In the past you always said in your videos that you didn't want to use nail polish anymore. Was this for a special occasion? They also don't seem your usual style.
Yes it was for a special occasion! I only get them done for special occasions now! It was a very fancy wedding that I went to so I made an extra big effort !
@@SustainablyVegan how cool!
Man I'm so keen for the eco gender gap video! I loved the vibe of this video so much, watched it right before bed and it made me feel calm and pensive (rather than anxious and cerebral, which I too often occupy when thinking about my impact). I loved your celebration of earth day! I went to an extinction rebellion meeting for the first time in Auckland on earth day and was shocked at how few people were there (maybe 50?/how socially awkward I felt. I also noticed that there were mostly old white people (mostly old women) and young women at the meeting... I don't know yet if this is a trend but it was interesting to see. I'd love to see if your thoughts correlate in the upcoming video
I noticed you have your nails done. do you have a sustainable way of doing those? no hate at all. I'm curious. looking for more sustainable options if available.
I always encourage questions on this channel so no worries about asking them! I get them done for special occasions (so this was for a wedding) and I do my best by going to a salon that takes sustainability in mind, is vegan and cruelty free (and the particular one I go to is a small independent Black, Woman owned). If you happen to be London based I would highly recommend them.
@@SustainablyVegan that's good to hear
The struggle is real. It feels so overwhelming.
Was that a proposal at the end?!
They are already engaged
@@numivis7807 thanks! I just found this channel so I haven’t been watching long. If she mentioned it I guess I forgot 😅
Slightly off topic…You looked beautiful in that flowery dress on your Instagram page hope your visa is resolved soon ❤️❤️🌸
I must be the only person who loves the earth and taking care of the environment but I absolutely do not believe any of the "climate change" stuff. I've heard it all but I don't buy it. But, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of reason to take care of God's creation instead of trashing it.
